I have not followed Pitt Bball as closely as in in years past. However, it is clear to me that he is our best player. Do you think he will be a panther next year or do you think he will try to make an NBA team? Furthermore, could he make an NBA team? H2P

G-League or Europe at this point.

chances that he will be in a Pitt uniform next season are slim

Yea, I no longer believe he will be at Pitt next year meaning Capel is gone. However, he is going to be the poster boy of what I will call a "professional college basketball player." Hugley doesn't have NBA measurables but could certainly play in the G League for 50K or Europe for 100 or 150. But, he has 3 years of college basketball left. You would think he would be offered 100K-200K per year for the next 3 years by someone. Pocket a half million or so, free food, housing, chicks, and a degree.

Looking back to guys like Blair, Taft, etc, I think you'll have dominant college players without NBA measurables cash in hard to stay in college

He’s too small to be an NBA guy unless he really gets better with his outside game and he loses more weight so he can jump higher and become quicker.

He's a below the rim player, but I can easily see an NBA future, especially if his jumper improves.
He’s using his width effectively , and is certainly more athletic than a year ago .Big fella carved out a career for awhile being an undersized wide body .
I don’t think hugely gets drafted -
But I see him playing in Europe for awhile and a team giving him a shot

Why would he play in European obscurity for the same amount of money he can make at Kentucky, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Texas, etc?

Because his pro potential is not dependent on his college team.
Thought that was obvious , but perhaps not to you

I think he needs another year but he can definitely make it as SF in the NBA if he improves that outside shot. That's a big if but it can happen with a couple more years of work on college or Europe.

Small forward!?? He’s gonna guard the likes of Lebron, Kahwi, KD, Khris Middleton, Paul George!?

he’s a center and his best bet is to be a stretch 5 in the mood of Draymond when he plays the 5. But Draymond is one of the smartest defenders in NBA history.

He’s better off continuing to develop in college and make as much NIL money as possible while there. This isn’t like JC who can benefit more and showed all he could do.

It's a good point. I assumed as an off the bench player. But you are right he would have to lose weight and get much better at defense. Probably best as a draymond green back up center type

Think of DeJuan Blair before you project shorter guys to positions in the paint.
The NBA demands high performance.
Hugely needs this and next year to crack the barrier.

I'm not sure of your meaning. I'm absolutely thinking of DeJaun Blair who played in the NBA for 7 seasons and made nearly $9 million.

Also -- just to be clear -- I don't think Hugley goes to the NBA after this season. I do see an NBA future, but I don't know when. At least one more year after this year.

My meaning is that Blair was a beast and a physical specimen with 2 years of college and didn’t last long in the NBA. Hugely needs to build muscle.

Seven seasons is pretty long.

Also, the notion that a 6-5 center was a physical specimen is kind of odd. As a "physical specimen" he was certainly well below the NBA average.

Will also add that Khem Birch has managed a 6 year NBA career as a 6’9” center, admittedly they do have pretty much totally different type of games. Just not easy to make it as a 5 at that height.

Because the money ain’t T the same for non-nba players
It’s a stupid point

You don't get it because you don't understand the dynamics in college and pro basketball. A player like Hugley may never play in the NBA because his size and lack of athleticism prevents that. However, he very well could be one of the best COLLEGE basketball players in the country, making him worth 6 figures to SEC teams.

We can sit here forever and list elite college players who, if we transplanted to 2022 college basketball would be worth 6 figures to SEC teams. I mean, just Pitt guys:

Chevy Troutman
Ashton Gibbs
Talib Zanna (maybe a 50K guy)

Then look at PG's who are a too unathletic for the NBA but elite college PG's

Knight
Krauser
Fields
etc

The NBA and College Basketball are essentially 2 entirely different sports. A college player like Hugley could be worth a heck of a lot of money to an NCAA team and absolutely nothing to an NBA team

Knight could have had a good nba career if he did not the major knee injury.

You are frankly way overestimating nil type deals for good college players with almost no nba future .
The fact you are making guesses instead of giving examples pretty much concludes that .
How much is Oscar Tshiebwe making ?
How much is Kellan Grady making ?

Please get the "no NBA future out of your head." This is college basketball, Souf. Hugley, as basically a freshman is an infinitely better college basketball player than a guy like Steven Adams was. Adams is going to make $100 million. Hugley: $0. NBA potential has NOTHING to do with how much a college player's NIL deal is worth.

I'll give you another example. Luka Garza. He had a Covid year he could have used. Now, luckily for him, he was upgraded to a full rookie contract but he started on a 2 way deal......which is still worth more than he could have made if he transferred to LSU or Auburn but a guy LIKE that and not him specifically, would be worth maybe as much as 500K to some college team looking for 1 piece to win a NC.

As I said, they are 2 completely different sports. There are no similarities between the NBA and college basketball. I really believe you are going to see these John Hugley or Chevy Troutman types become professional college players.

Well, like I said, Blair played 7 seasons and made something like $9 million bucks. That's quite good. Sure, Big John needs to do a number of things to even make the NBA, but I'm not even to the point yet where I'd say he can have an NBA career as successful as Big Fella, no matter how much stronger he gets in the near future.
