The more I think about JC and his potential as an NFL back, I think he is going to get drafted in the mid rounds and be that teams starter by the opening week, if not by the end of the 1st quarter of the season, unless a team like the Steelers draft him and they have a proven all pro back.

Before he hurt his knee against YSU he just looked ready to break out even more than he did his sophomore year. Then last year he did not look 100% all year, until around the Clemson game. Clemson and after he finally looked close, but not all the way, to his Junior year level. The recent photos of him compared to the photos of him at the beginning of last year are like night and day. I can't remember when or who, but someone posted a pic in a thread on this board side by side and he looks like a monster.

There is no doubt in my mind that he is going to work harder than anyone, and I will say IMO that he will have the best career of any of the RBs taken in this draft. He may not have the flat out speed, but he is fast enough, and he is capable of being an every down back, he can block, catch and run you over if necessary. More importantly, he just seems to have that natural instinct to find the proper hole and that cannot be taught. To me that was the main difference last year when the other backs filled in, their lack of hole awareness.

I am sure I am bias, as he is just such a warrior, but someone who possesses the drive he does and has good given talent usually ends up succeeding at the highest levels. I type this post hoping the Steelers get him in the 3rd round, because it would be a steal for them, IMO.

Rookie RB's rarely start in the NFL. I think Fournette starts, and that's it. James is an inspiration to all of us, but lacking that top end speed to run away from people will hurt him.

I could see JC playing a big back role where there is also a shifty RB on the roster - think Dion Lewis and LeGarrett Blount

I highly doubt he will have the best career of any RB taken....as the op predicts.....

Fournette and cook are top end talents

McCaffery will produce in a big way in the right system

Connor will have a solid nfl career.... but not in the same duscussion as those mentioned above.

That'd be just our luck! Many Pitt players that make it into the league seem to eventually end up with the Patriots at some point ... making it hard for me to root for em.
I don't really root for any of them anymore, in the NFL I root only for the Steelers.

James Conner reminds me of a young John Riggins....All the kid needs is a opportunity & then I think his job will be secure in the NFL at least 3-4 years depending on how his body holds up because James will not go half assed, step out of bounds, etc...the punishment in that league can take a toll.

H2 PITT !!!

Agree.

It's unfortunate for JC that the game has changed in the past few decades.

Connor would have been a first rounder back in the randy MacMillan days

Much like randy would go in the 3rd or 4rth round today

Steelers will draft him with their compensatory pick at the end of the 3rd round. They've had 4 compensatory picks in round 3:

2014: RB Dri Archer
1999: RB Amos Zereoue
1998: WR Hines Ward
1997: DE Mike Vrabel

50% chance they go RB!

Riggins ran around a 9.7 100 yard dash @230lbs.

I don't know about that but their style of taking on contact & being physical runners who had deceptive speed. James Conner will fool ya w/ his ability to run away from LBers. & get into the secondary & take his chances w/ them trying to bring him down 1 on 1.

H2 PITT !!!

If I'm an NFL team, I want JC in my locker room. This dude is a football player with a huge heart, you can never have too many of those. He showed pretty decent pass catching last year. Someone is going to get a steal no matter where he is drafted

I don't believe that James is a fluid enough athlete to be an elite NFL running back. He may be able to find a role like previous posters have mentioned. I really am just rooting for him to make it to a 2 or 3rd contract so the guy can have the money and platform to live a nice lifestyle and to do good things on this planet.

My favorite play last year was the 2nd score against Clemson where James was faked a handoff(as if a power sweep to the right), then Peterman pivoted & pump faked a WR screen to the opposite side while James got into a pass route down the sideline where all the Secondary & LBers had bitten on the excellent fakes & fluff as Conner was wide open.
The entire play took almost no time but the execution by everyone involved was a thing of beauty. That single play encapsulated what Canada engrained into our players as to how vital it is to execute, sell & go all out regardless if you get the ball or not. Peterman & Weah did a great job of hitting their cue's on the sell of the WR screen.
Clemson had not seen anything that well executed I gotta believe as they seemed totally baffled as to what was going on.....my point is how Conner takes a knowledge, execution, passion for doing whatever is asked of him to the highest of levels be it blocking, playing out fakes, getting into & running very tight routes or running the football.
I have no doubt James Conner is NFL running back...no doubt.

H2 PITT !!!

Conner is actually more skilled than Riggins IMO.
The league is moving back to some ole school tight end and fullback football!
His timing might be perfect!

Sadly I think the combo you are using as example will happen. this panther has worked for the Pats, Bill probably likes his story and he is built similar to Blount who has some tread on him now. JC would be a beast there. I think the Steelers would like him but their line make up of "non" road graders would not work well here. the other team I could see maybe as a change of pace are the cowboys with the massive O line. Jerry may want more speed but Emmitt never was top end speed. All that said his NFL success, like many, may not be self made per se but if he goes to a road grader team he could make noise.

High floor, low ceiling player. Will make money and set up his family well.

That running style is not going to last long cause it cant. Hopefully 5 or 6 years. If he had a career like Marion Barber, id consider that a huge win.
