OT: Any Good Movies/New TV Shows?

Anybody see the wwI documentary, “They shall not grow old” by Peter Jackson.... excellent!
It's in fairly wide release now. Highly recommend seeing it at a theater instead of waiting for TV.

Ive been hooked. It's the perfect mix of storytelling and action. Shows the story from both the CIA's side and the terrorists side.
It was signed for 2 seasons and got greenlit for season 3 a few days ago. Also second season of Mindhunter finished filming in December but no drop date yet. Perhaps in October like Season 1? Crazy that was back in 2017. Time flies.

A few people have mentioned “Luther.” I have very mixed feelings about it. Overall, I find it difficult to watch in large doses because of the high intensity and the fact that every crime is heinous — serial killings, cultists who drain blood from their victims, etc. Plus, the fact that so many of the killers somehow escape justice and roam the streets. The cop-killer, for example, who is captured alive early in Season 1, somehow is free to murder Luther’s ex-wife later that season. The cult killer who drains blood from his victims while holding them captive for years, not only walks the streets freely, but is rich because of his successful lawsuit alleging police brutality. These and other instances defy credulity.

Also, one thing other successful British detective shows avoid is to delve too intensely into the personal lives of the detectives. That enables the focus to be on crime solving. Sure, we know Endeavour Morse dropped out of Oxford, joined the Signal Corps, loves opera, is incredibly bright, drinks too much and crashes and burns a series of relationships with women, but we learn that in small doses and the shows don’t spend an excess of time on those characteristics. We get those little bits of such knowledge in the regular course of crime solving.

By contrast, Luther’s private life is a major focal point of the show and is the cause of many of his repetitive emotional crises. And, his on-going strange relationship with Alice, the woman who murdered her parents in the first episode and got away with it, is troubling to me. By episode 6, she has become his accomplice in hunting down his ex-wife’s killer. It takes a major suspension of reality to buy into that. I’m not as interested in watching a psychological melodrama as I am in watching crime solving. But that is me, and I can readily understand why others find it brilliant.

I hope not hijacking, but a somewhat related question to the OT. Anyone have the new Amazon Firestick, and do you like? Is the content (whether if you have Prime or not have Prime) worthwhile? Tech work well with good Wifi (which I have)? The price seems pretty good (currently can get from Target for 34 bucks). Online reviews of these things seem to vary widely, hard to really tell. Thanks in advance...

I’ve had a fire stick for a couple years now so not a new or current version. I got mine as a gift and had heard from others of problems they had with it being slow to stream, freezing up or otherwise not working whereas they never had similar problems with a Roku. But I’ve never had any such problems with my fire stick (or with a Roku which I have on another TV. Only time I’ve ever had problems streaming is with a smart TV where I didn’t need a fire stick, Roku or other device for the streaming).

I also like Amazon Prime. A lot of good Amazon original media for movies and TV shows. I use it and NETFLIX equally.

Thanks for the reply. Might give it go.

I didn’t think there was much of a market for things like fire stick anymore because of the proliferation of smart televisions. My main tv has Netflix, Prime, Hulu, You Tube and about a dozen other streaming services built-in. I don’t subscribe to all of them, but they are there. What is the advantage, if any, of a fire stick or similar Roku or Google device?

My smart TV is always having issues with software updates and wi-fi connectivity.

IMHO it is better to use a streaming device, and that way if the chipset gets too old to update, you can replace the streaming device cheaply, whereas the chipset in a TV requires you to buy a new TV

I can’t wait for season two of Mindhunter. An underrated show on Netflix is Santa Clarita Diet. I was a huge fan of Bloodline and it was a shame the show had to wrap up after three seasons.

That was my thinking too. Plus, my TVs are fairly new vintage, good quality, I don't want to upgrade yet. They have the ability to be streamed to, but none are Smart.

My experience is the same, have had problems on 2 Samsung smart TVs whereas no problems on regular TVs with a Roku or fire stick. Available apps also seem limited on Samsung smartTV. One example, no WatchESPN app, have to access espn3 thru the web, which is unwatchable with how often it freezes or lags.

Bloodline was intended to be 1 season. Because of its success, they went back and "created" Seasons 2 and 3. I thought Season 1 was an A+, Season 2 was a C and Season 3 was a D-.

I am up to season 4 if Peaky Blinders. This is a BBC show about 1920s gangsters in England. I don't watch many shows but am hooked on this one. Season 5 is in production.

Gonna start watching that today

Agreed. Season 1 was fine on own.

Season three was supposed to dig into the father’s past and his dirty dealings in drugs with Roy Gilbert to help make the Inn so successful. Season three had to be completely rewritten and filmed quickly after a fallout between Netflix and Sony.

Get a jailbroken fire stick & a VPN and you can get a few apps that can pretty much hook you up with any movie or TV series you would want.

One of my sons is a big big fan of Peaky Blinders. The wife and I started watching but the 1st couple episodes didn’t immediately draw us in like a real good series typically does. He said it’s best watching it with the subtitles on which we hadn’t done. He may be right because it was often hard understanding exactly what they were saying because of the strong accents. Been meaning to go back and give it a second try with subtitles but haven’t had a chance yet.

Mine is a Vizio that gives me issues.
I love my Rokus. I had to replace one as it was the first "stick" version and the chipset was too old and my wife didnt like how Netflix looked on it compared to the Roku3.
So her tv now has the newest streaming stick and my now old Roku3 is still ticking along just fine.

I never liked apple. And when i first chose a streaming device Roku had the app for Time Warner whete others didnt. It saved me money on not renting a second digital box.

Been happy with Roku and their longevity.
I still have that old Roku stick as it works, just an older chipset that wont take newest updates.

I do watch with the subtitles on. That is good advice! If you do this, you will be hooked.
