OT:Buccos

Guys help me out…

Last year there was a Hispanic Pirate pitcher throwing gas. I didn’t pay much attention because the team was so bad, but I remember being intrigued by the heat he was throwing. Who could it have been? Which of these guys throws 100+ ?

Or was it Ortiz?
I think so

1:55 time of game. Pretty cool.

Shortest game I can recall ever watching.

Certainly makes a boring sport more tolerable.

Mitch goes the dis. !!
I’m really happy to see his turnaround from where he was a few seasons ago. Starting to look like he could be the ace of this rotation moving forward. Unlike Roansy (who I’m still very high on), Mitch is steady. Very consistent with his outings.

Ortiz's fastball sits in the high 90s and he's at 100+ semi-regularly.

This isn’t tit for tat. But you’re siding with a sport where every player stands in one place for 99.5% of the game. That’s not exactly exciting But hey it excites you, so cool.

I’m not soccer Joe, I’m baseball Joe. I played baseball at a higher level than you, I’ll bet my life on it….so I’m not speaking out of a position of ignorance. Ask me what sport is more fun to play, I’ll say baseball all day. But as far as spectator sports, they don’t compare…FOR ME and the rest of the world.

And as far as soccer, it’s essentially ignorance toward soccer and provincial mindsets that lead to opinions like yours. And that’s fine. But It’s ok to say, yeah I don’t understand, I don’t have a rooting interest, therefore it’s boring…

Thanks to Canada and some students at Harvard, the gridiron game evolved out of soccer. Otherwise you’d be a soccer fan.

Yep, professional soccer really packs em in the good ole USA!
Breath taking sport watching a bunch of dudes run back and forth for 2 hours! Talk about boring!!!
Even pro hockey is more exciting than soccer.
The best part of soccer is the Moms!

A league that averages 26-30k per game in soccer only stadiums? I’d say that is packing them in. That’s not bad for minor league curtain jerkers. What do their equivalents draw, say the Bradenton Mauraders? What did the buccos average last year? 9K if they were lucky?

And as far as the USA? We’d be singing sweet Carolina on a Saturday night in a soccer stadium instead of Renegade on Sunday afternoons if it wasn’t for Canada. And you’d love it. What is americas fascination with Canadian invented sports like gridiron football, hockey and basketball?

But at least for our provincial folks, they still have good ole baseball invented by real Americans.

IDK, guess we're better at Canadian sports? We like Sushi too, and spaghetti!

Here, soccer is a fringe sport. It just can't get over the hump. Maybe in another 100 years? But you and I won't live to see it overtake any of the 3 major professional sports here.

Lots of kids play soccer when they're young, then forget about it.
There's always something going on in baseball too. Series of individual battles, pitcher vs. batter, hitter vs. pitcher, fielder vs runner. Now with the pitch clock, the action is compressed and better paced.

Soccer can't even support its own sub board here. Lumped in with Olympic sports.

Everything you said is true. No arguments.

Soccer may be a fringe sport here, but baseball is a fringe sport around the world. Heck it’s fast becoming a fringe sport here as well. Our society is passing the sport by and boomers and gen Xers who grew up with the sport are dying off.

The game within the game point you made in baseball is legit. The same exists in soccer. You just don’t see it or understand it…and it’s not done at a screeching halt like baseball. And if you’re objective, you’d acknowledge if you were PortsmouthPanther (England) instead of FreePortPanther, and I came to you telling you how great and exciting baseball was, you’d have a completely different opinion.

It’s all about what you grew up with and what you rooted for in your formative years.

By the way, 9500 people at the pirate game last night. Impressive. But those who saw it saw a 1:55 game that was riveting for those who understand the game, and appreciated the much needed pick up in pace.

Except I sat down to watch the game at 8:30 after getting kids to bed and the game was already over. If games are going to be shorter they can move the start time back to 7:05 or 7:35
That’s a good point. Around the 7th or 8th inning, I flipped over to WWE Raw (speaking of boring), flipped back after what seemed like just a couple minutes, and I caught the last out. It happened that quickly. Then I saw Keller threw like 25 total pitches the last three innings. What a performance.

May was going to be a tough month for the Pirates. They are currently in a stretch where 15 of 20 games are against teams over 500. That is followed by a west coast trip to Seattle and San Fran. Getting to June over 500 would be a win for this club

Soccer is popular in poor areas and in the third world because you only need a ball to play it.

I'm sure if I was European, I might be a soccer fan, just like if I was a woman I might be gaga over Brad Pitt! But I'm neither, so I'm not.

That said, to each their own.

Was it the guy going to jail for the relationship with the underage girl?

No. Good thought though.

I’m thinking it was Ortiz because it was just last summer if I recall correctly.
It was definitely Ortiz. He had electric stuff, but didn't get a win in his brief stint with the big club.

No matter how good a pitcher is, he needs decent run support. Hard to try to be perfect every time out.

So much for going .500 this home stand. And they get to go on the road to face another tough AL East team in Baltimore next.

England, Germany, France, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Netherlands - I would hardly call them poor/third world.

By this logic, soccer will be quite popular in the US soon.

What a bunch of crap.
Some people don’t like hockey, some people don’t like baseball, some people don’t like golf, some people don’t like auto racing, which is okay.
But if you don’t like soccer, you’re ignorant with a provincial mindset. Why don’t you throw in, racist ugly American.
Believe it or not, some normal well meaning people just don’t like soccer.

Are you looking to outdo Huggy? Im guessing you don’t realize this, but Third world is categorized as “offensive” language these days. What countries are you referring to?

Gee, better sue me then!
Think Tacopina is looking for work.

That was a terrible loss today. Terrible. Every aspect the game was bad. Pitching....walks killed them. Fielding....hill muffs an easy third out and leads to two runs. Also a botched run-down. Base running....two caught stealing. And hitting.....too many strikeouts. Horrible game

Worst hitting line-up in baseball. All dead wood. Reynolds hasn't had a Homer since opening day. McCutcheon looks like he is half dead. The greatest defensive catcher in the game(lol) is batting .150. I am well on my way to my typical summer ignorance of these turds.

The Shelton extension was such a terrible move. He is such a below average manager. He is absolutely obsessed with having Underwood Jr. on this team and a vital player.

Back to trying to make chicken salad out of chicken $hit.
The Pirates roster has been exposed after a hot start against bad teams.
Now that they are a bad team, other good teams are treating them the same way.
Agree about the holes in the batting order. More holes than not.

That was the problem with the long term deal for Reynolds. He's a good player, and certainly isn't overpaid in today's MLB salary structure, BUT, he's an extremely streaky player.
He goes into long slumps where he does absolutely nothing.
Gets an occasional double here or there or a base hit.
But his power disappears and very little run production.

Now the Pirates have a good chunk of $$ tied up in two guys who aren't consistent run producers, Hayes and Reynolds. Joe, Santana, and McCutcheon can't carry a team, and probably won't even be here after this season.

The pitching has been so so to OK, but they need run production. Can't expect this staff to win 1-0 or 2-1 games every night.

Last night, Underwood killed himself by walking the Minor League guy batting ninth! Have to get that guy, not give him a free pass so one of the hottest hitters in the game gets a crack at extending the lead. 3 run HR puts game out of reach, not that they were going to rally against the closer anyway!

I will never understand the obsession that Shelton has with Underwood Jr. He has zero clutch in him.

Holderman is a better option in the eighth, every time. Thought that was his role on this team??

Used to be Crowe, but he'd been totally ineffective and is now injured.
