Wow. Since Reynolds signed the nice contract he has turned into a complete turd. Hits into double plays regularly and tonight drops a fly ball. He just looks awful.

Well first of all, he obviously lost that ball in the lights. It's not like he just dropped an easy one.

Secondly, he's hitting .296/.339/.512. He might look awful to you, but if you think that's actually awful you might want to sit this one out.

i find it 100% impossible that there are no better options in Indy than Underwood Jr. this boner can't even come in and toss a clean 7th inning with a 10 run lead.

Oviedo with nice back 2 back outings after a rough few starts. Most certainly wasn't expecting them to rough up Zach Gallen. 2 straight wins will do.

First homerun in a month and a half. I think they might have expected a little more from him. Obviously those are not awful numbers, but, they need and expect power from his bat. You know that though, you just comment mostly to irritate posters.

He's on pace for 22 home runs. The most he's ever hit in a season in the majors so far is 27. If you think that the Pirates thought that they were getting a 40 home run guy when they signed him you are simply wrong.

And the thing about my comments that irritates other posters is when they post stupid stuff like Reynolds being a "complete turd" and that he looks "awful" I don't have any problem pointing out just how stupid that is. And people don't like others pointing out their stupidity.

It's not often we agree on things but you nailed this. He's a 12 million a year player not a 40 million a year player if he hits .280 with 20 to 25 homers he's earning his pay. Let's not forget he is a consistently streaky hitter which they knew when they signed him

I think people see that he signed the biggest contract in Pirates history and they compare that to people who signed big contracts with other teams as if they are equal. Reynolds' contract is the 51st largest contract in MLB. He's not being paid anything close to what someone like Yordan Alverez or Jose Ramirez, let alone what guys like Aaron Judge or Mookie Betts are being paid.

And sure, the Pirates would love it if he became a consistent 30-35 homer guy. But there is no way they thought that was what they were getting when they signed that contract. At this point, he is what he is. It is really unlikely that he's got some great leap forward left in him.

I think they would like it if he could be less streaky. If he could just cut out the worst of the lows that would be a lot better. But that just might not be what he's ever going to be.

I agree he just needs a bit more consistency. Remember last year he stunk for the first two months of the season. If he does get more consistent he could have a ceiling of 30 homeruns. I'm really excited to see Keller's next start.

Look, I don't think he is an awful player. I just don't think he has performed to my or pirate management expectations since the contract. He had a very nice start. However, in his last 30 games prior to last night he hit zero home runs and had 10 rbi while hitting .270. He also averaged a strikeout a game over that 30 game span. Those are not the numbers that they are expecting from him. They paid him to produce and lead them going forward. As a lifelong pirate fan I hope he succeeds. Maybe he heats up, maybe he doesn't, but, his numbers over the last 30 games don't project very well over an entire 162 games.

My all time favorite Pirate was Willie Stargell .
A 282 lifetime batting average who ended up with like 2,500 some hits .
My point is anyone who saw Willie at the plate knew he was either gonna crush a pitch out of the stadium , get a crucial hit , or go down swinging . Like he did so many , many different times .
Now I don’t want to compare Reynolds to Stargell but Reynolds is at that tier right now as a Pirate (imo) not one time did I degrade Willie as a turd …. Just sayin’ …. Let’s Go Bucs …

From what it looks like he is going to have a typical Reynolds year. He is pretty much doing what he did all through his career. I would think he was probably pushing after signing the deal.

Fair call. He is not a turd, and I deserved to be called out for that. I also loved Captain Willie, I don't think Reynolds will ever approach what Pops provided numbers wise or just what he meant to the team. One can only hope that down the road, we can look upon the Reynolds years here rather fondly. Let's go Bucs!

Do you think he pulled Kellar to soon after 83 Pitches? I mean the bullpen has been pretty consistent this hear besides Underwood

He definat

He definitely pulled Mitch too soon. He is partially responsible for this loss. Of course Stephenson coming in a blowing up is also but let Mitch ride. He easily coulda pulled 1 more inning out. I don't like Shelton, I think the extension was very undeserving.

I'm shocked he didn't go to Underwood Jr. Shelton absolutely rides or dies with him for some wide and unknown reason.

Hard to say. Mitch got a bit sloppy with control in the 6th. He hit that dude and was getting behind hitters. So in a way, I believe he pulled him to protect him a bit, and figured he could count on a pen, that sans Underwood has been pretty reliable. I'm not sure I would fault Shelton for it.

After they pulled Blunderwood from his last appearance, they announced he had forearm tightness. He may be ticketed for the injured list.

They said yesterday that Underwood was fine. In fact I think Underwood himself said it. So if they put him on the injured list now I think it would be one of those times where a team does that more to try to get a pitcher "right" rather than him actually being injured. Which you aren't actually supposed to do, but teams do that sort of thing pretty regularly.

Do umpires get reprimanded ?
I mean that was a bang bang play but Jose Feliciano could have made that call .. My goodness . Reynolds clearly safe . No reason for it ...

It was close enough that if he was called safe, the other team would have challenged it.
At least there is a mechanism to get it right.

I imagine umpires get scored, but doubt a reprimand is in order. I'm sure these guys are doing their best.
Calling balls and strikes is much more inconsistent than safe/out calls.
Just use the "box" and get on with it.

I think also, McCutcheon's unbelievably club friendly deal when he was in his prime has skewed the locals understanding of what top players actually cost.

Speaking of ill advised contracts, I was curious as to what happened to Gregory Polanco.
He's playing in Japan, had 21 HR's last season, and at age 31 he hopes for another crack at MLB here.
Taking a risk at a rising "star" before they explode is a crap shoot for sure.
The Pirates have no room for error in these gambles because Nutting has shown he doesn't laugh off any mistakes.
Cruz will be the next one coming up, as well as Mitch Keller.
You'd think the relatively modest contracts for Hayes and Reynolds would help them spend for other rising stars, but to expect those guys to accept bargain basement deals is unlikely.

This is why the verdict is still very much out on Nutting. The GM seems to be doing his job acquiring some nice young talent, but the question will remain can they afford to keep them here as they mature and reach their potential?

Hill putting on a display on the hill.
Not sure how long he'll last . He looks exhausted already in the 3rd ...
Needs run support ...

They’re… treading water. And in a seemingly weak division, so that helps. It would be nice to win another series soon though seeing as they haven’t done so in just under a month.

For those who missed it because it was a west coast game, the Pirates tied a franchise record last night in Seattle with seven home runs. McCutchen, Santana, Hayes, Reynolds, Marcano and Suwinski with two of them.

They had hit nine home runs in the first 25 days of May, and then seven in one game.
