I’ve been watching enough. His stats were surprising when I looked them up while he was blowing a game over the weekend. He’s just not a guy who passes the eye test for me. Perhaps I’m biased because he’s a hoopie, or I compare him to guys like Melancon when he was the 8th inning guy here. Either way, let’s hope he improves. He’s got sexy velocity that’s for sure.

Well if his stats surprised you, then perhaps you weren't watching enough. He's been quite good at holding leads going into the 9th.

Your initial question sounded frighteningly like another well known "critic"!

What was that right fielder thinking not throwing home? You had to take the chance and send him, but I honestly expected him to be out by at least 5 - 10 feet.

And then throwing that runner out at second was huge. Absolute dime that could have only been executed on a fastball right down the middle. Did I hear them say that was only like the 4th guy he has thrown out in 20-something attempts? And it was the league leader in stolen bases... go figure.
I don't know what Hedges' caught stealing rate is, but I do know the league average is around 20%. So, if he has caught 4 out of 20, that would be average.

I still find it to be a minor miracle that he caught Ruiz. That was after not getting him on a pitchout earlier in the game.

Yikes. But hey, when I go negative, you know it’s saying something because it’s not often.

His stats show 5 caught stealing and 27 stolen bases. So I assume that's 5 for 32, or 15.63%. Whatever the number was - and I very well may have misworded it - they made it sound like his % isn't all that great on the broadcast.

OK. That is a bit below average. Not sure how much.

But he handles pitchers so well though.
With both Davis and Rodriguez at Indianapolis, his days of handling pitchers may be numbered.

I get it with the Pirates having 3 rookie starters in their rotation a guy like Hedges is valuable, but his bat is such a detriment.

Throwing that guy out was nothing short of a miracle. The quick tag by Marcado was a factor as well. Good thing because he surely would have scored on the book rule double that followed.
Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good!

Some of the catchers we've found over the years... it physically angers me to watch them swing a baseball bat. And I'm not sure if it's a Pirate thing or a league thing. I mean, Jacob Stallings and his .369 slugging % was somewhat of a hot commodity at one point.

Feels like it's been a while since we've had a good inhouse catcher. Obviously Martin and Cervelli were free agents. Neil Walker changed positions. Tony Sanchez... nope. Reese McGuire... nope. Elias Diaz was okay, I guess, but he kind of just came out of nowhere, it felt like.

Stallings on the Pirates never did anything to deserve my ire, but I actually rooted against him because of his old man! Shame on me!!

Tony Pena, Manny Sanguillen, Milt May, Jim Pagliaroni.
Put Pags in there because my Italian mother loved him!!

It's been a while!!

Hedges made two excellent throws on Ruiz. The first steal was successful not due to Hedges, but because Oviedo was slow to the plate.

Just remember Doumit had some good years. If memory serves, he was a mostly terrible catcher (like positionally), though. And I'm not sure if he was even playing catcher, other than spot duty, during his better hitting years. My cousin worked for the Curve and always talked him up as being a pretty cool dude. I'm also trying to remember if Garret Jones played any catcher.

The nice thing with these two, they can at least get at bats everyday with the DH

Do we have a first basemen of the future? Last I checked, the highest rated prospect there was Nunez, but I don't know exactly what he projects to be. There's a 6'7" dude on the other side of the infield who wouldn't look so bad there.

I always just assumed Davis would end up there, but the DH really eliminates the need for that move. At least for a while.

Is it me or does Holderman blow? Every time I see him it’s a struggle. He was lucky not to blow it up last night.
A relief pitcher can't have a good outing all the time. He just has to be good most of the time. In the case of Holderman, he's in the latter category.

Might be back to back ugly ones tonight .
Keller seems to be struggling a little ...

Can we stop pretending like Jack Suwinski is a major leaguer yet?
Ha! I was just talking about him tonight. People are calling the talk shows and saying O’Neill Cruz will be like a trade deadline day acquisition for this team. Yet there are no guarantees he will be any better than Suwinsky AND he’s coming off a major injury. If ever there was a fanboy take, that’s it.

Said it before, but I have a tough time discerning which of these young guys are actually part of the future vs who is just up here as a dirt cheap warm body. I feel like Suwinski was of the latter category and kind of out-performed his pedigree for a hot minute but has now fallen victim to the expectations of that success.

Suwinski is at best a platoon player. He's adequate defensively in all 3 outfield positions, but at the plate, he's helpless against left handed pitchers.
He does OK and does show occasional power against righties, but in key situations, the opposition brings in a lefty reliever and he is an automatic out.

He'll do for now, and is what he is, but when the Pirates make their move, he better figure out lefties, or have a role of platoon player and PH'er.

I think it's the right decision to give the young guys these auditions, rather than paying $5M for some veteran to hit .235, but yeah - how many up right now are everyday MLB players? Seems like a lot of them will be lucky to even end up as utility players within a year or two.

That's crazy talk. O'Neil is an unproven raw talent. I have no expectations of him when he returns beyond what he has done so far and that is to be a slightly above the Mendoza line hitter with a ton of power potential. I can't see him making the team much better when he returns. Having said that, I do think there is still a chance that he will realize his potential at some point. But until that happens, Gregory Polanco will be in the back of my mind.

Well, they both obviously graduated from the same Dominican Republic school of sliding!

Today's game is suddenly important, in a small way. Need to rebound from that lackluster performance last night and get back on the win side against a putrid team.

Kendall, another name I think of often when all these debates about Hayes and Reynolds contracts come up.

As far as the list of past Pirates catchers, how bout Mike Lavalliere.

Pretty sure old Spanky came from the Cardinals. He and Don Slaught platooned when I first started watching. But neither came up through our system.

I mean, if people are ok with Hayes's offense, Suwinski is much more the modern hitter. F batting average, chicks dig the long ball. Jack Suwinski is 26th in the NL in OPS and OPS+ (whatever that is) and the Athletic had him as an NL All Star in an article yesterday.

So I am thinking he is a keeper. A modern day Gorman Thomas or Dave Kingman for us old dudes.

I have no problem with Suwinski against RHP. He is worthless against lefties.

Neither did the previously-mentioned Pagliaroni (acquired via trade with the Red Sox; I'm old enough to remember that).
Like Smokey Burgess who came from the Reds I believe.
I realized later that Pags didn't fit in the discussion for that reason.

Yikes the last 9+ innings the A's have outscored us 16-2.

Roansy Contreras line so far, 7 batters faced, 5 hits, 2 walks, no outs....5 runs, 2 guys on base.
