…hate to be a pessimist but I think it’s worth asking how many games will it take for them to match those 7 home runs from last night? Kind of like how they scored all those runs against DC in that night cap of the doubleheader like a month ago (the last series they won) and it took them, what, 2 weeks? to match that run total from that one game. For those who missed it because it was a west coast game, the Pirates tied a franchise record last night in Seattle with seven home runs. McCutchen, Santana, Hayes, Reynolds, Marcano and Suwinski with two of them.
They had hit nine home runs in the first 25 days of May, and then seven in one game.
And Castillo was great, though the Pirates really didn't put up much of a fight against him.Velasquez is rusty, and the Mariners are paying the Pirates back today.
To me, this season is all about individuals and their progress.Schizophrenic Pirates go from scoring 11 runs and 7 HR's to getting shutout and striking out 17 times!
Can we just stay somewhere in the middle boys??
Velasquez elbow shot again, probably heading for Tommy John. Roansy as mentioned above scratched.
Could it be Priester time?? Probably not until after the break.
This is a flawed team, but not as putrid as usual. They are reverting to the mean, but perhaps the mean will be a tad higher than we're used to.
Yeah…and water is wet. This team stinks!Jack Suwinski just hit his second ball of the game into McCovey Cove in the 9th inning.
To cut the Pirates' deficit to 14-4.
Like every other season, past, present, and future with Nutting in charge. To me, this season is all about individuals and their progress.
Going further back and pre-Cherington to be fair, the Archer trade was a “go for it” move that blew up in their face. Nice that they tried to make a deadline move that didn’t have to do with waving the white flag as usual, but obviously gave up way too much and go figure he ended up sucking. In no way shape or form, am I defending Bob Nutting. But let's look at the three forward looking contract moves of the past 2 years.
1)Sign Ke'Bryan Hayes to an 8 year/70 million dollar deal.
2) Sign Brian Reynolds to an 8 year/107 million dollar deal
3) Extend "Sheltie".
1) Looks like a good to great glove but a below average bat.
2) Started off en fuego, but since the contract a negative WAR
3) 20-8 signs an extension, team goes 6-19.
Yeah. Got to get lucky in some respects, but you can just dab your toe into the deep end, you got to swim.
That's interesting and very, very true. So I decided to look at MLB salaries. Starting with Reynolds contract, the Pirates will have ONE player with an AAV salary over $10 million. One.The difference from the frugal Pirates and other ML teams that spend more freely is the Pirates need to HIT on their gambles, other teams laugh the failures off and go try again.
The Dodgers are a prime example of this, keep spending until you get it right.
Nutting is one of the richest owners, and it appears he wants to stay that way. He does the minimum, but he won't spend lavishly. Some of these owners ego demand they win, Nutting doesn't seem to be burdened by this affliction.
Losing Velasquez is really going to hurt the Pirates, especially if Contrares also has issues. That would be 3 projected starters on the shelf, and no team can withstand a blow like that.Bucs looked solid today . Pitching and hitting impressive …
Maybe you can’t lose 3 projected starters and withstand the blow but I’ll offer up the Tampa Bay Rays and their 40-18 record as one that lost 2 top of the rotation starters for the year and barely registered a blip.Losing Velasquez is really going to hurt the Pirates, especially if Contrares also has issues. Hill is what he is. He can periodically give you 6 decent innings, but just as easily get rocked by a team patient enough to sit back on him.
That only leaves a few capable starting pitchers and that won't cut it.
Their hitting is also very streaky. They can score in bunches when everyone is on, but they look pretty anemic at times when a few of them are scuffling.
If they finish the year around .500, it will be a good year for them. Keller, Oviedo and Ortiz will have shown they belong. Later in the year, surely they will bring up a couple more pieces to get seasoning. Still very much a work in progress.
The exception rarely disproves the rule.Maybe you can’t lose 3 projected starters and withstand the blow but I’ll offer up the Tampa Bay Rays and their 40-18 record as one that lost 2 top of the rotation starters for the year and barely registered a blip.

It’s a one time Peacock network game, I believeAnyone know why first pitch is 11:35 today ?
Not sure i've ever seen this ...
I know it’s because it’s on Peacock, but I’m not sure why they’re streaming this game so early. It looks like their only other games starting this early are west coast games. Most start between noon and 1:00pm.Anyone know why first pitch is 11:35 today ?

He (Hayes) said he worked with the hitting coach and made a minor tweak in his at batting approach . A toe tap (whatever that is) .I was thinking about this today. We all rightfully so trash Bob Nutting for being cheap. But let's look at things from his perspective. He gave a big contract to K'Bryan Hayes. He just did to Reynolds. Are either holding their end of the bargain. Reynolds WAR this season is towards the top, but that was mostly from his scintillating start. Hayes is an average player overall. Bad offense, great defense. Also, 3rd base is supposed to be a power position.

That's what caught my attention . Like was pointed out this meant the game was aired at 10:30 in StL .Peacock streams an early Sunday game every week. Started last year. No one in Pittsburgh noticed last year because the Pirates weren't involved in any of those games.
Last week the Dodgers at Tampa started at 11:30. The week before it was the Yankees at Cincinnati at 11:30. Before that it was the Angels at Cleveland at 11:30. Next Sunday Arizona at Detroit starts at 11:30. The following week the game is Baltimore at the Cubs, so the game doesn't start at 11:30 eastern (10:30 in Chicago), it starts at noon in Chicago. After that it looks like most of the games that have been picked so far start at noon eastern.
The odd thing to me is why are they having west coast teams even be the road teams in these games? For the local Dodger, Angel and Diamondback fans those are 8:30 AM on a Sunday starts. How many people in those markets were actually watching the game? It would seem to make more sense if those games were mostly between eastern time zone teams, maybe with an occasional central time zone team thrown in there.
Then again , these days , who's watching Cardinals games in StL ?That's what caught my attention . Like was pointed out this meant the game was aired at 10:30 in StL .

The sooner there over , the better ...
Is it me or does Holderman blow? Every time I see him it’s a struggle. He was lucky not to blow it up last night.Wasn't pretty last night but those are the type of wins that the pirates have traditionally been on the other end of in the past decade or three. After a good performance from their starter the A's brought in their Underwood to walk away the lead. then the Pirates held on with the back end of their bullpen after all the top guys needed a rest from the weekend.
Blow is a very strong term. I don't believe any reliever with a sub 3 era "blows". His WHIP is a little high for my liking. But his K:BB ratio is really good.Is it me or does Holderman blow? Every time I see him it’s a struggle. He was lucky not to blow it up last night.
His last two outings have been uncharacteristic, but he's been really good in the 8th inning, to get to Bednar.Blow is a very strong term. I don't believe any reliever with a sub 3 era "blows". His WHIP is a little high for my liking. But his K:BB ratio is really good.
Is he dependable as a closer? I don't think so. At least not right now in his career. But he has been solid as a setup guy.
You haven't been watching much then.Is it me or does Holderman blow? Every time I see him it’s a struggle. He was lucky not to blow it up last night.
A W is a W! Take them any way you can get them.Last night was the first game I've watched in a while. Least satisfying victory I've seen in some time, lol, but every bit of fortuitous goofiness seemed to break our way. We weren't hitting that first pitcher at all, but we were lucky he threw like 30 pitches in each of the first two innings.

But is he a bust? You haven't been watching much then.
"Blow" indeed????
