Absolutely the most subdued, quiet, unenthusiastic opener for the Pens since they drafted Sidney Crosby in 2005. That's a long time. Dave Wannstedt and Matt Cavanaugh were coaching our Panthers trying to figure where the hashmarks there back then. Pitt basketball was in the midst of becoming a full blown powerhouse. The Steelers were led by 2nd year QB named Ben Roethlisberger who led them to a 15-1 record and AFC Champ game the year before. Andrew McCutcheon just finished his rookie year in the Gulf Coast League. Joe Paterno was leading his Penn State Nittany Lions to an 11-1 record.

Wow, a different world.

2021. Unfortunately father time has caught up with the Pens. Sidney Crosby is still a great player, but no longer the best player. Kris Letang and Evgeny Malkin are still good players, when they are healthy, but again, especially with Malkin, no longer plays at a Hall of Fame pace. A dozen years of continuing to "go for it" has caught up with the Pens, as their prospect pool is pretty much depleted from a lack of high draft picks. But hey, Sid and group won 3 cups. That's not a disappointment, though the past 3 years going out in the 1st rd is a disappointment.

And what do we see? A team hoping to get into the playoffs, then bowing out again in Rd 1? I don't want to give up any more draft picks at the deadline to try and go in. I am fine with, you know, rebuilding. The trouble with this unlike your Stillers n'at, the Pens need capacity, especially after the last season and a half of COVID. The NHL is a gate driven league. So the Pens will walk an interesting tight rope by trying to keep fan interest and also trying to figure out how to get young talent here again.

It is great to read about the Zahorna's, O'Connor's, etc.....but these guys are no more than bottom forwards, no more than a Zach Aston-Reese at best, and that isn't going to elevate this team. It's sad, but inevitable.

I maybe writing the epitaph too soon, but I can't see how the Pens get lucky again in my lifetime with a Mario, with a Sid, hell with even a Jagr or Malkin. Most franchises don't see one of these guys come through in 25-30 years, we had all 4 in their prime. I just can't imagine that happening again. Sure, there will be great players, but another generational talent? Doubt it.

Anyways......it's hockey season!

Maybe they'll get lucky again and get into position to draft another Mario, Sid, Jagr, Geno, Fluery, LeTang... you have to admit they where at the right place at the right time when it came to drafting legendary players the last 40 years.

In ESPN's Power Ranking they were #11 which really surprised me.

Oh, they will eventually have high picks again (Letang was a 3rd rounder) but the question is, and the answer is most likely not, will guys of that talent be there. Remember, if there is one thing I have said, I have said it ad nauseum, "not all 1st rd picks are created equal". This applies to 5 star recruits. Some years you have superstars, some years you have good players. An occasional year, you have a transcendent player.

I, for one, am excited to see ESPN’s coverage of the National Hockey League and what they can do to help the league/sport grow. Obviously it’ll die down after opening week, but I’ve been impressed by their work thus far.

I also wouldn’t be mad if Buccigross “looked out” for his hometown team, if you know what I mean. :)

I haven't been this blah about an opening pens season and I believe it boils down to they refused to upgrade goaltending. So they will do well in regular season again and then flame out early when jarry craps the bed again.

There’s some growing pains, but I do appreciate that they don’t have the “bottom line” taking up the television screen.

This reminds me of how the Pens were so listless to start their three-peat season.

Without the 2 big guys , I think they are going to play with a little more urgency early on this year .... That may cost them but they've got no choice ...

ESPN sucks. Everything they do is about them. It’s not the NHL tonight with the defending champs, it’s about ESPN saving hockey. The announcer sucks by the way. He can do college football but not hockey.

Only half of the 32 teams make the playoffs.

So your comment is silly and nonsensical.

I meant for the Penguins. They are in the playoffs. Seeding means very little so the 84 games they play before April serve almost no purpose at all.

Lightening looking like through the first two periods that they've been partying all summer .

Wrong. The Eastern Conference has 11 of the top 16 or 17 teams in the NHL, and that’s not really even counting Montreal who made the Stanley Cup Final last year. Every point is going to matter this season.

It’s amazing how sound and disciplined the Penguins have always played without Malkin and/or Crosby. I’d obviously rather have both in there, but they are rolling 4 lines, getting the puck in deep and not making careless turnovers in the neutral zone.

Not automatic for the Penguins this year.

We're in a very tough division, and we're a team with a giant question mark at the most important position on the ice, goaltender.

Islanders, Hurricanes, Capitals... all as good or better than Pens... Flyers, Rangers improved.
