OT: NBA Thread

Really hard luck that Phoenix goes 8-0 and still needs a red-hot Portland team to lose in order just to try to beat Memphis twice but they should be in good position to add some more talent in the lottery. After a slow start Cam Johnson looks as though he's going to be a good player for them and you have to like their potential for next year.

I think Cam can end up being a solid starter who can score in the high teens as long as he stays healthy. I think this will always be his challenge.

Oh... Yeah. It's pretty drastic. Just look at the young guys you remember playing in college and how much smoother most of them become as pros.

Nets are playing VERY hard and pretty damn well. Kind of an overlooked bubble story. My Raptors will be pushed by that squad. Actually expecting that to be pretty tough series. Nets playing with a lot confidence and nothing to lose. Then... They add Durant and Kyrie next season. They'll be like the Clippers next season.

Since my son and I were rooting strongly for Portland, we had a healthy hatred for Brooklyn. The Blazers can't defend for crap, but we kept wondering "who are these guys hitting these shots!?!"

Absolutely loved every minute of this game. My son and I had a blast.

The abilities of NBA players to shoot a basketball has gone off the charts in the bubble.

And then there's Dame who's on another planet.
Watched a quarter or so.
Was impressed - I knew the blazers were good ,but the nets surprised me

I think that he may actually end up being a little better than that. He still has a lot of room to grow in his body and game.

Its funny, but Cam possibly may conclude his career as the best pro to play for any Howland or Dixon team. I think it will come down to him and Steven. Two guys that Pitt did not get much out of in terms of college productivity unfortunately. But such is basketball in many cases.

Yeah that’s what I was getting at. Everyone knows how talented LeBron, KD, Lillard, Booker, LaVert, etc. are.

But it’s so eye-opening when some dude who’s been in and out of the league all year is making crazy shots all night.

There’s just such a huge talent gap. Everybody in the NBA is soooo skilled anymore. If you can’t shoot you better be ELITE at something else.

Moreover, even your defensive specialists that can't shoot now (your Beverleys, your Bledsoes, your Smarts, what have you) would be marksmen if you transported them back to 1990.

So the first round is about as perfect as you could ask for. Potential Portland-Lakers. Mavs-Clips? OKC-Houston?!? Boston-Philly? Sign me up for all of it.

Miami v. Indy should be a lot of fun too. Raptors v. Nets will be better than expected if the Nets keep up what they've found in the bubble. Fingers crossed that Raptors pull they one out.

I agree with you about Cam and Steve. In fact, Steve is already by far the best pro ever to play for a Howland/Dixon team. It's not ever close at this point.

But I agree that Cam could easily pass him. Having watched Steve in the NBA as much as I have, I really don't expect him to ever really bring any more offensively than he does now. More or less, he just not an "offensive" player. He's a great team player, but his value is in the scheme of an offense. I just don't believe an offense will ever "go to" him. This is how he was used in his one year at Pitt, and exactly the same way he's been used in his 7 years in the NBA. (And NBA offenses are less and less going into a post man too). I just don't ever really see him averaging more than 15 PPG in any particular season.

But Cam is exactly the kind of player the NBA is trending towards with the continued move to the three point shot. He'll have a nice career even if he's a just a spot up three point shooter (and that's how I see him averaging 16-18 PPG in future years). But if he can improve putting the ball on the floor and creating shots for himself, he can be more than that.

When watching Caris LeVert last night, I saw alot of the player Cam might be able to become.

I've watched a few games in the bubble. This was by far the best. Guys were diving all over the floor and doing everything they could to win. Glad to see Lillard come through with the W as well.
You're gonna see a whole lotta this now that the playoffs are about to start! Can't wait.

Memphis is struggling to score. Ja has to be more willing to shoot from deep for them to have success today and in the long term. Looks like X today

Working on his 3 point shot is going to be key for him going forward, he needs to get that up towards the high 30s in the next year or two to graduate to elite levels.

I think Memphis did well to get this far but beating this Portland team who was probably a 3 or 4 seed when they're playing at full strength is a real tall order. Next year with Jackson, Jones, and Winslow (perhaps) back in the rotation they're really going to be a handful but it's a shame that they won't have a first this year to upgrade from Brooks.

Portland is just so bad defensively for stretches. Looked like they had a chance to put this one away early and they just gave up easy basket after easy basket.

When Jonas is in the game Memphis is offensively executing on multiple levels but the second that he goes out they revert to being too one dimensional. Plus Nurkic just starts snacking on the offensive glass which never helps.

As someone who just got seriously into the NBA in the last year or 2, wasn’t Whiteside a stud in Miami? What happened to him?

No motor, cheats to block everything, horrible positioning on both ends. He's a physical monster who is a great stat stuffer on a bad team but isn't even a good bench player for a good one because you can't trust him to try.

Like today, for example, where he's giving up roughly a point per minute that he's out there.

Was there an incredibly brief moment where we convinced ourselves Pitt had a shot with Kyle Anderson or am I thinking of someone else?

The rumor I heard was B. Knight had an in with him, and wanted to push hard to get him. Dixon felt our time and effort would be best spent elsewhere figuring he wouldn’t come to Pitt.

The NBA last touch before out of bounds rule is so, so, so much better than the NCAA's. Who caused the ball to go out of bounds on bang/bang plays is a much better rule than adjudicating whether it grazed a player's fingertip last.

I didn’t know that there was such a rule in the NBA

Yeah, that was a point of clarification for this year so that we don't need to get the micrometer out and see if it hit a fingernail. It's a really welcome change.

Great ending for Portland. CJ McCullough hit like 3 or 4 big shots in a row over Ja.

On the other end, Ja had 3 costly turnovers at pivotal moments. He played well though and showed that he's a star.

Pulling an SMF here.

Denver in 6.
Boston in 5.
Milwaukee in 4.
Raptors in 5.
LAC in 5.
Heat in 7.
LAA in 5.
OKC in 7.

Also - I've not rooted against a team in ages as hard as I'm rooting against the Clippers.

Morant is so athletic that there are plays where he does not dunk because even he does not realize how easily he gets to the rim ...

I have the same problem, very relatable.

He also makes $27 million this year, which makes it even worse. He is the only player in NBA history to go from a league min salary to league max (not "super max" of course.)

Nurkic is a relative steal at like $12 million a year.

Denver reminds me of a college team in that they seem to have grown up at the right time for the playoffs.

Just turned on the game as I heard Mitchell has over 50 ...

Defense is still a problem for the Nuggets but Murray and Jokic running that high pick and pop action was completely unstoppable in the last ten minutes today. Add in Porter emerging as a third weapon and the possibility to add Barton or Harris at some point in the playoffs to take the load off of tired legs and you have to love Denver's upside.

That said, Jokic was gassed by the end today. They have to find a way to sneak in some more rest for him.

That was the best shot that Philly probably had without Simmons. I still can't believe that they gutted a very good team two years ago to have this squad out on the court, talk about closing your own championship window.
Yup. Stick a fork in them, and Brown will be getting fired.
