OT :OT: Favorite local restaurants no longer around...…..

La Cucina Flegrea, on Murray Avenue in Squirrel Hill. The chef/owner was from the Naples area of Italy, and it was completely authentic. She relocated to a spot in Market Square, but did not last there. It remains the best Italian restaurant to have ever been in Squirrel Hill - hard to fathom that there has not been one there since it moved.

I just remembered that I had a few good meals also at Jake's Above The Square on Market Square, Downtown.

Do you all remember Mguilsis sp? something like that on Carson Street right after the Westend headed to town on the right, loved the food. I would go there as a very young kid in early 70s

The original Hot Dog in Oakland, by far. The Tuscan Inn on Wildwood rd in Hampton. Good Pizza joints in North Hills are Caliente’s, Bellisario’s and Roma, Olives and Peppers rt 8 in Barkerstown, but they recently closed 😢
Tuscan Inn would be my choice. Followed by Park Schenley & McKnight Smorgasboard (JK).

Oh damn........what was the restaurant by Tony Pais? It was Portuguese (or he was) and it was always at the top of Best Restaurant Lists. I forget the name. What the hell was it called...okay.....Google, Siri...help.....Baum Vivant! That's it.

Stone Mansion
Carmassi's
Tin Angel...although it wasn't very good for the last number of years before it shut down

Poli’s in Squirrel Hill.

Not fine dining, but I loved George Aiken’s for a good, quick meal.
The (future) missus and I would often get takeout from George Aiken’s and spend a nice summer afternoon - of food, wine, & Frisbee - on Flagstaff Hill. Looking back on it, those were some of the most fun & carefree days of my life.

Pleasure Bar in Bloomfield. That thick block of lasagna is the best
Did Pleasure Bar close?
Didn’t see The Elbow Room listed yet and although I drank there a lot more than I ate, I miss The Sharp Edge Beer Emporium.

I’m old enough to remember when Bubbles & Sherman was the restaurant in the Webster Hall. It moved to Forbes Street in Squirrel Hill and the Park Schenley replaced it.

True, but I think Superior Motors had issues even before they opened with much fanfare. Speaking of hipster, need to include Salt of the Earth on the list which incidentally was started by the same person as Superior Motors. So his track record for stick-tuitive-ness isn't great.
Did it really close, or is it in some sort of limbo? I can appreciate what they have been attempting. However, I'd rather them teach job skills for regular, good food instead of fish with sea urchin foam, or whatever they serve.

1. La Fiesta - felt like I was eating in someone's living room but the food was good.
2. House of Chiang - I think I have the name right? Always went there with the parents when they visited. I distinctly remember the pink walls
3. Aladdin's (I think was the name?) next to Mellingers - looks like it is a deli now.

Anyone remember the Italian place on 19 In Wexford, about a half mile north of NA highschool? It's been closed for at least 10-15 years, the the building is gone too.

Wife and I ate there once and I recall liking what I had. Name escapes me.

Great chef, we have followed him for years. Controversial but interesting, talented guy. We started with him at a taco place in the Southside, Yo Ritas , a hot dog place on the circle in East Liberty, Salt of the Earth, Union Pig and Chicken. We sort of know him and like him. Hope it is not closed.

Does anyone remember Erculani's (?) in Ebensburg? Never made it there but people used to rave and I regret not going there before it closed.

No, it's still alive and well. They changed ownership a few years ago and dropped the Mariani's name from the signage, but kept many of same recipes.

Is that what eventually became the Sharp Edge Creekhouse and has been vacant for a few years?
No. The Creekhouse is right by the bridge. Winkys was a short bit up the road. I think the Winkys building is now a veterinarian.

I forget who but someone just bought the Creekhouse along with a sister bar. Caliente maybe?
