Cbus won the Stanley Cup last night. My phone blew up with text messages till about 1am from co-workers from there. I mean, really, 1 regular season game after being owned for how long? Oh, i'm a sore loser that can't admit cbus is better. Uh, sure, that's what the W's vs L's tell me.....

Murray played playoff level great. Sullivan needs bashed over the head with this Simon garbage. I don't care what Sid wants, he f'd Kessell with 3rd line role last year, he can do what he wants with Simon too.

I agree 100% with Madden. If Horni is going to play on the 3rd line, he never should have got the contract. Poor asset management by Sullivan/Rutherford.

Pens recap.

To be honest, like the Caps winning the playoff series over the Pens last year, this had a bit of the "hidden vigourish" factor. I mean the Pens weren't going to beat the Blue Jackets forever. This isn't Alabama vs Vanderbilt. The Pens maybe a better team, but they aren't THAT much better. To put it another way, the Jackets were due. Just like tonight, with Boston 14-0-4 in their last 18 are due for a regulation loss.

Anyways, if you looked at the boxscore, you may have thought Murray played a "meh" game. If you watched the game, you will realize it was one of the best games a goalie has played this year, he was fantastic. Almost all of the saves were "high danger". He made a couple of saves that were as good as any made in the NHL this year. The goals all were snipes or great plays (ie no soff goals). I don't know what else he could have done.

The Jackets are a good team, they played with an unbelievable desperation, blocked shots, got into passing lanes, ferociously forechecked and kept on coming. Again, they had to win this game, had to, and played like it.

The Pens? Didn't play so well. I am not sure who Dom Simon has pictures has but he is an incredibly ordinary hockey player and I don't care if Sid likes him on his line, he just doesn't have the skill. He is not Pascal Dupuis or Chris Kunitz. He is not even ZAR or Jared McCann.

Sid, sometimes Sid does this, he overpasses. As the Pens are want to do, they love to make that extra pass for the pretty tap in goals, but in this game where the Jackets are laying it all out, this was not the game to pass up a shot on goal in lieu some 50 foot cross ice pass that was getting blocked or intercepted. Too often the Pens stars (87 and 71) were guilty of this.

The PP is a joke right now. The one power play that was good, Geno shot and shot and shot, but the Pens controlled the play. The others, including a 4 on 3, the Pens passed and passed and turned the puck over repeatedly giving up possession. Amazing how shots on goal can drive PP's instead of cross ice passes. This was a game where the Pens needed to simplify their game.

For example the Pens only goal. Kessel actually fore-checked, he was able to beat the Jackets to a loose puck that was caused by Malkin forechecking the Jackets into a turnover, Kessel made a quick 8 foot pass to Malkin who made a quick area pass (5-8 feet) to ZAR who buried a wrist shot for the goal. No 50 foot passes. Simplify the game. Quick passes, overload and out number, and the Pens didn't do much of this.

The 1st line was not good this game. The only defense pairing who had a decent game was 28-44. Why did the Pens sign Hornquist to an extension only to have him as a 3rd liner. If this is the way it is going to be, then that signing will be worse than the Jack Johnson signing.

Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player. Dom Simon is not a top 6 player.

I would rather see Teddy Blueger on Sid's line than Simon. Or McCann. Or ZAR. Or Hornquist. Dominick Simon to Mike Sullivan is Sean Rodriguez to Clint Hurdle.

The PK was really good for the Pens this game, but the PP again gave up a killer shorty. Not to pick on Kessel, but he is really snake bitten. But at least he is now shooting the puck.

This game was not that surprising, the Jackets were due, they are a good team, they have some elite talents and truthfully without Murray's play, this game could have been 5 or 6 to 1.

Big two points on the line tonight against a white hot Boston club.
Well said. Good summary.

- Didn't think we played with the intensity or sense of urgency that we needed last night.

- However, Murray did play a great game ..... really gave us a chance to win but the rest of team just wasn't up to his standard ..... the only shot that I thought he had some chance to stop that he didn't was the short handed goal where Kessel tripped over his own blue line, lost the puck, and the CBJ skated in and took a shot from the inner high left circle ..... it was a really good shot which made the save tougher but I thought Matt had a chance at it ...... Murray had at least 3 highlight reel saves and overall just played great ..... he seems to be playing at a high level more consistently.

- Give credit also to the CBJ goalie who has had his problems against the Pens but was very good last night.

- Agree that Simon just doesn't fit on the 1st line with Crosby and Guentzel ...... I think you need to have someone that drives the net (to clear space for Sid and Jake, get screens/deflections/rebounds), someone that is good at puck retrieval, and someone that can score ..... Simon offers few of these things ..... what has really hurt us in that regard is the injury to Rust and I'm not sure if he will return this season.

- Agree, Gudbranson/Pettersson may have been the best defense pairing last night ...... the Schultz/Johnson line that had been playing really well, wasn't as good and especially, I thought, Schultz did not have a good game ...... hopefully Letang will be back soon to take over for Trotman, and still think it will be interesting to see what happens to the lineup when Maatta returns ..... will have to see among the defensemen who plays well and who doesn't between now and then.

- Just got a call from a friend ..... he is giving me a ticket to the Bruins game tonight !!!

There’s absolutely nothing positive to say about Kessel right now. There’s no reason he should still be on the first PP.

Well one other problem on the shorty goal, that wasn't a Matt Cullen or Craig Adams out there bearing down on Murray on a breakaway it was 37 goal scorer Cam Atkinson who sniped it. A great goal scorer made a great shot.

I agree with you that it was a very tough save especially because it was a great shot by a goal scorer and it certainly was not a bad goal against Murray ..... not at all, it was a sniper shot exactly as you said ...... but the shot was from about 28+ feet (just inside the upper/inner part of the left circle), unobstructed, and more importantly there were 3 Penguin back checkers and no other CBJ past the blue line ...... one Penguin was even close to getting a stick on the puck as Atkinson shot it ..... if Atkinson doesn't shoot the puck when he did, the back checker gets closer and lifts his stick, pokes the puck away, or rides him off the puck ..... also Atkinson has no one to pass the puck to, so he had to take the shot right from where he took it as he had no other good option ....... if the goalie reads that situation and understands the puck carrier is a sniper that can score but has no option to pass the puck and must shoot it quickly as the back checker is getting close, he could have been more aggressive with his positioning and come out 2 or 3 feet outside the crease rather then being back on the edge of the crease and that would have cut the angle down more and decrease the open net high and make it so Murray would not have needed to move his blocker as far to make the save....... again I am not criticizing Murray for that goal as it was a tough save and he played fantastic last night ..... just noting something he could have considered doing to have a better chance at making the save.

Turico is doing a decent job so far but should vary “Pittsburgh” with “the Penguins” on occasion. Right now saying Pittsburgh constantly is redundant.

They’re playing really well, but please take Malkin, Kessel, and Hornquist off the PP.
At least get Guentzel, on it. And if you’re going to put Hornquist on the PP, have him only in front of the goalie.
Sorry had to vent.

The PP is pathetic.
McCann with a great finish on the shorty.
Defense and Murray not tested much, but solid.

Good to see Simon back on the 3rd.

Yeah I’d get Kessel and Hornqvist off. Keep Shultz and Letang on first unit. Quite frankly Kessel lost that privilege.

McCann seems a little bitter about not getting ice time in Florida. GOOD! make those aholes regret trading you.

Great win. Boston was due. Murray was great again. We desperately need 58 back. The PP sucks. 71 and 81 will score eventually. It was great to see Sully give time to Blueger. Oh and Patrick Sharp is too good looking of a guy. Not fair.

Tonight vs Boston is right up there with the game where they beat Tampa Bay at home about a month ago (other than the silly penalties). Excellent performance start to finish. Caps up next on Tuesday!
Murray is seeing beachballs out there.
He usually does around this time of year and moving forward. Can’t wait for the Murray posts the next time he has a bad game.

All the trades have worked out well so far. Gubransons physical presence on D is much needed. The entire D corps has played well since the Game in Phillly

One of the Pens blogs said the Pens really think McCan has a ton of upside. He’s shown more in a month than either guy they traded away. He’s a great fit on Sids line

I think Kessel played a solid two way game. I think he’ll break out soon and get hot at the right time

I think Blueger got PT because ZAR got hurt. Kinda forced Sully's hand.

When Murray isn't doing his job, he deserves the negative posts. Just like Malkin and Kessell get. Murray isn't above criticism.

The difference is Murray receives more than just fair criticism after his poor performances.
I’ll speak only for myself

Nothing about my criticism was unfair .

Much like my criticism of Malkin through this season is not unfair.

I’m very glad Murray has finally stepped up and played like a leader.
The pens desperately need it.

Trade has been great.

Actually, we all (me too) have criticized Jim Rutherford and while trades tend to be more long term to proper evaluate you look at his trades this year:

1) Pettersson for Sprong. This looks like a win right now. Sprong has only played in 36 games, has 11 goals and 15 assists. Meanwhile Pettersson has played well, a regular D pairing, 3rd amongst rookie Dman in scoring. Sprong was sold as Mike Bossy + Jari Kurri here at times by people. He is more Connor Sheary.

2) Brassard + Sheahan + 2nd and 3rd rd picks. I can give you a list of Penguins 2nd rd picks over the last 30 years and you wouldn't recognize 27 of them, so it is far from a guarantee. But Bjugstad and especially McCann makes this look like a fleecing by the Pens. McCann who seemed like a throwin looks like Pascal Dupuis coming here. He is the same age as Sprong, a former #1 pick and can play all elements (5on5 with Sid, 3rd line, PP and PK) of the game. Bjugstad looks a lot like Jordan Staal did when he was here as a 3rd line Center. And happy to do it.

3) Eric Grudbansson for a 4th rd pick. Again, he has term left too, a big body the Pens severely needed on the blueline.

These trades have made the Pens that cliche' of "tougher to play against".

Nonetheless the fortunes of this team rely on:
1) Sid Check. All good here.
2) Malkin. No check yet. Still need to see less stupid TOs (he always takes stupid penalties) and need some consistent offense like he has always supplied.
3) Murray. Looks like a big check here. Playing extremely well, a 931 save percentage since December 15th.
4) Phil. No check here. He has to score. At least he is shooting the puck.
5) Letang. Would be great seeing him out there for 25 minutes and seeing Zack Trotman in the press box watching dressed in a suit.

If those 5 are checked, with what the Pens have, they are a deep and balanced team that could make another cup run.

Rutherford has strengthened the team and given them some more depth for a Cup run.
They can legitimately handle the first two rounds, but then Tampa looms.
This team beating Tampa would be an upset.
Get by them, and the Cup dream could easily come true, so long as everyone, mostly Murray, stay healthy.
Murray is the key. No concussions, just solid goalie play night in and night out.
That and getting the PP straightened out.

Everyone needs to slow down. While probable, the playoffs aren’t guaranteed yet. No doubt they should get in but stranger things have happened.

I don't even know what to say about the PP. The PP goal they scored last night was not really a "PP goal", it was a 2 on 1 off the rush. The only time the PP looked good this weekend is the one (they didn't score) where Malkin started firing shots from all angles. At least they had chances. This team you would think be lethal on 5 on 3's (they have yet to score this year) and 4-3 (more ice)......but they are horrible. Way too deferential. I think Sid is wasted down low like that, he should be the guy who runs this thing like Mario used to from the half wall. Problem is, Malkin likes to play at the half wall.

I think Sid is being wasted where he is. Put Guentzel there. Replace Phil with Guentzel. Set up Malkin for the one times. But stop passing up shots and shoot.

What a difference 9 days makes. I told y'all to relax, still a lot of games left.

Malkin and Kessel will be fine. They are getting chances and pucks will start going in. Hopefully the get hot just before the playoffs start.
