Pens outplayed by a large margin in the 2nd period and 2 PP goals for Carolina make the score 3-1 end of 2nd period ...... Pens outshot 24-11 after 2 periods .....
Blomqvist has made multiple very good saves and has overall played well and not to diminish his game but, I wrote an initial assessment of Blomqvist on 10/14/24 in this thread after his 2nd game in goal and discussed that I felt he was off angle on some shots and was playing too deep in the net at times making him susceptible to high shots to the far post and most of his goals against were high shots ....... the 2nd Carolina goal tonight on the PP was a perfect example of what I was talking about ....... the shot was taken from the faceoff dot in the left circle ...... the best angle and position to stop a shot from there is for the goalie to be out on the corner of the crease ( just below where the circular part of the top of the crease meets the side of the crease which is perpendicular to the goal-line) ....... Blomqvist went down in an rVH position on the near post for no good reason, was off angle and too deep, and just before the shot which again was from the face-off dot, he got up on his skates but was too close to the near post and too deep (he needed to come out and away from the post) .... the shot beat him high to the far post where there was open net just as similar shots did in previous games ..... the goalie coach needs to go over film with Blomqvist and adjust his positioning on those shots ....... Carolina is shooting high on almost all shots so far and it's obvious that they have watched film on Blomqvist and saw what I've seen ...... 3rd goal was high shot from point which looked to me like it deflected off Acciari's backside and changed direction (replay confirmed now, announcers didn't mention it).
...... and now a forth goal on a high shot from the upper circle with no screen which went in high over Blomqvist's shoulder ...... it was a bullet but a shot that Joel will need to stop in the future as he gets more experience in the NHL ...... and again I think he has a bright future in the NHL.
