OT - PENS ........

How much of this treading water the results of the big 3, Crosby in particular wanting to stick together. I know their contracts are limiting options but I look at the Caps 2 years removed from a major retooling and playing some of if not the best hockey currently, even Ovi before his injury has bought in. No question the caps would have not moved forward with their plan if he was not on board, do not see any of our big three willing to do that or change the way they play. Barely making or not making the playoffs does the team roster no good, in a way Jarrys play has been a blessing.

Elvis has just left the building ...... Pens beat the Kings 3-2 in OT on goal deflected in by Rakell !

Mostly good defense both ways.

Ned solid in goal.

Crosby's line had 4 or 5 shifts in a row in the 3rd period with glorious chances but could not put the puck in the net until their 5th/6th shift when Grzelcyk scored on another good chance to tie it 2-2.

7-2-1 in last 10 games and they win against a very good team tonight.

Pens played a really strong game.

EK put together one of the most atrocious shifts ever seen on a power play. Any of his boneheaded moves should have gotten him some time on the bench. I’m aware of his assist in OT, but this guy makes way more bad plays than good. And those mistakes aren’t physical, they’re mental “ I just want to play the way I want to play and don’t care if it costs us goals and games”.

Also, I don’t want to rehear Sullivan’s cliche answer as to why the young guys aren’t playing and are being sent down (defensive mistakes) when he allows EK65 to play garbage hockey night after night without any accountability

I remember it was either Caufield or Kennedy on one of the fan shows about 3 weeks ago. Said at that time, the next 10 games or so will be very telling on what the Pens do.

As cool as it is that they are in playoffs now, it kinda sucks because this does nothing for the future.

The fan in me though just wants them to win.

Just because the pretty girl is talking to you doesn’t mean she’s interested. They are not a cup contender. I’d still unload all expiring contracts ESPECIALLY since their play has actually improved since going younger. Maybe additional youth could improve them even more.

Who are the expiring contracts?

I'll provide a list when I get a chance, but I also understand that some expiring contracts are bad and can't be moved. I mean, move what is doable.

Doing a quick search - there’s really mor
Much space

Cody glass is a rfa $2.5 M
Otherwise
Beauviller- $1.25m
Others wingers under 900k all UFA

Grelcyk is UFA
Peterson is UFA but on IR

Unless you want to looks to next year bunting ,Hayes , acciari are your options

Pens acquire PO Joseph back from the St. Louis Blues for "future considerations" (which usually basically means next to nothing or nothing) ...... need depth on left defense with Pettersson down and out week to week (read he may be out 2-3 weeks and maybe longer, we'll see) ...... POJ will be a RFA at the end of this season, so low risk deal ....... St. Ivany and Aho are also hurt and out at WBS at present, so do need some depth on defense.

I always liked his game -
Other than not being very big but trying to play like he is

Pens beat Nashville 5-4 in OT on Rust goal ....... Pens were down 1-0, 2-1, 3-1, 4-3 in the game and kept fighting back to win ! ..... Crosby and Rust both had 4 points in the game.

Pens now 8-2-1 in last 11 games.

Devils next up on Saturday !

I am afraid it is fools gold however. As I said, the worst thing that could happen is to contend, contend, contend, contend, contend and then finish just short of the playoffs and draft 14th or so again.

That is the last how many years. The classic finish middle, draft middle, stay middle.

The positive to this, guys like Rackell and Rust really could elevate their trade values.

They pulled it out. This coulda been a very bad loss. Gotta give it to the entire team and staff, they have really turned it around. 8-2-1 in their last 11.

Honestly, I'd love to see Jarry and Graves really settle into a good groove to jettison them first. Those 2 are the massive albatross contracts right now.

Yeah I agree with recruits

This is fools gold. This team is barely a playoff team. But even bad teams have good stretches.

Like you said gotta hope Jarrys elevated play allows them to dump him. I’m not sure anyone is dumb enough to take on Graves

But you could maybe package him in witb a Rust or Rackell.

Need to rip off the band aide now or rock bottom will be far worse down the line

I understand your take (and can't say I disagree necessarily). But I'd rather root for them to make the playoffs than not.

Seems a silly way to tank
To want to dump a couple of 29 years olds .

I mean if you want to rebuild you need to move letang, Malkin and karlson and acciari

Losing two RW with 3 more years in contact seems silly
When Hayes and acciari have more expiring contracts

graves is left shot , so if we can get a cheaper RW shot and move karlson that would be ideal .

Malkin and Letang are likely to retire before their contacts end

It's not tanking, it is trading guys who would bring future assets back.

Also, not wanting to be tha wet blanket but.....the Penguins are doing what they always do under Sullivan in December.

Well i’m saying trading secondary younger guys instead of the old guard.
So you want to keep the old guys
But took for future players and prospects - which means essentially having no real functional lines
So - how isn’t it tanking ?

No I don't. At all. I have been pretty vocal about that for years, haven't I? I am just talking about trades that likely could be made. A bump up in Karlsson's play also may make him moveable.

But what is achieved by trading wingers for prospects beside just getting worse ?
I mean - I don’t like Graves , but defenseman are expensive unless you’re trying to go cheap and be demonstrably worse .

Let’s be real - there is no retooling with Malkin and Letang still on the roster
Only a tearing down to rebuild

After losing to the Devils 2 nights ago 3-0, the Pens come back tonight and beat the Flyers 7-3 ...... Crosby with another 4 point game ...... Pens now 9-3-1 in last 13 games ....... they play important back to back games against the Islanders Saturday and Sunday ...... we'll see how they do !

How can a team so horribly inept now play so amazingly well? Which is the real penguins?

Ned standing on his head!
Only the Islanders, but have to win these games.
USA list to Finland in OT.
TV cameo appearance by Pitt football alum Jon Taglianetti. Looks like he has an equipment role for the Pens?

Jon Taglianetti was on the Pitt roster for a while but never played much .... his brother Andrew played a lot of games for Pitt football.

Anyway, Jon Taglianetti has been an equipment manager for the Pens since the 2013-2014 season and has been head equipment manager the last 3 years.

Ned has been fantastic through 2 periods (21 saves on 21 shots) tonight ..... Pens lost to the Islanders last night 6-3 reverting to some bad habits but Pens lead 2-0 after 2 periods tonight against the same Islanders playing much better and getting great goaltending so far ...... hopefully they can close it out tonight ..... still a period to play, anything can happen !
