OT: Pirates trade Melancon

How about Walker? ?? How about the others before him, care to defend ? This organization gets ZERO benefit of the doubt , except from human Bobble heads
Not really. I don't care about the Pirates enough to defend anyone. The Melancon trade was a very quality deal that makes a lot of sense for the Pirates now and looking toward the future. That is literally all I am talking about.

Oh good lord. Captain Hindsight coming back with a vengeance with Bautista. Let's just not forget to kill all of the teams who passed on the players who wound up being good for the Pirates these past few years, given that this is a meritocracy and development/success is clearly linear.

Walker was above a 2.7 WAR player once in his career. He showed signs of decline with the bat last year and is showing further declines this year. What am I supposed to say? That I believe a small sample of defensive metrics and he's now a competent defender at 2B despite never being one before?

I had no problem trading Walker. I did have a problem trading him for Neise. You are one of those who just plugs analytics and thinks well this answers all. Again, if the Pirates kept Walker, moved him to 1B, signed Happ, likely they are sitting here 57-58 wins and firmly in line for the Wildcard. And that is with Cutch and Liriano sucking.

You don't trade guys just to trade.

and let's be honest here Owt, this bridge year would have been a whole lot better if the supposed veteran stars of the team would have performed this year

Oh sure. And again, I expected someone to have a big slump or a major injury. It is why I said before the season started they would win around 84 games and not make the playoffs.

Interesting, the Giants just traded their #1 prospect Phil Bickford who was #65 overall for the Brewers reliever Will Smith. Plus a catcher.

Taylor Hearn was the Nats 27th ranked prospect.

But the Pirates got a RP, what an incredible deal!

NH is wearing clownshoes yet again.

Now the guy we traded for Marlon Byrd, dilson Herrera just got traded maybe straight up for Jay Bruce :/

I actually like trading Melancon. I loved the guy and completely disagree he has slipped much, but with the market for good relievers it was a no brainer.

I actually don't mind the return in general terms. I'm sure those pitchers are good. I'd be shocked if the class a flame thrower doesn't get injured and makes the bigs in a few years. But I like rivera.

My only 'beef' is the return compared to market value. Huntingdon got schooled again. It's easy to trade a player that others all want. When we are trying to get the piece it's more difficult. I think overall this week, other than the padres trading Kemp for a 31 year old prospext player that is currently suspended for severely beating a woman... this Melancon deal will go down as the next most lopsided trade unless we make another today or tomorrow for some marginal pitcher like nova or Matt moore
Or if Mark falls into the pits like Hanrahan & Grilli?? Hate to see him go, but this makes sense. They cleared a roster spot by kicking Niese back to NY. I'd guess Bastardo is gone for one of the AAA arms. I guess they got no takers for Locke??

Acquiring Antonio Bastardo and his $6.5m for next year means bye bye Watson this offseason. Geez, just hold into Niese and decline the option at end if the year.

It's crap like spending $6.5m on Antonio Bastardo that makes me not take the people who say NH is handcuffed by Nutting seriously. He wastes so much money in middling crap that you can sign legitimate players for the amount he wastes.

Again, no problem with the Melancon trade. However, seeing what other teams got back for trading relievers, again I think the Best Management Team In Baseball undersold Melancon.

But my problems are.....I effing sick and tired of these "prospects". Why the **** is Specoli out there at 1B and not Josh Bell? Why?

I am tired of having one of the best farm systems. For all of this money they will save here and there, they never go out on the market and actually buy a legit player. And they have so many club friendly deals.

Yeah, they saved money on Neise. Wee!!

So now going into next year, you have Neise's salary, gone. Melancon's gone. That almost $19 million right there. McCutcheon will soon be gone.

If you aren't going to put a prospect package for a starting pitcher, then you have to pay for one. So.....you got some money, spend it.

Here is the thing, the Pirates really don't care if they win a championship. You heard it straight from Huntingdon's mouth. They want to extend the window, keep the window open as long as possible. That means win between 87-92 games every year, contend for the Wild Card, keep the payroll in the lower quarter of MLB teams, reap the reward of decent attendance, make alot of money, rinse and repeat.

Eff them. I ain't buying this. Again, not upset with the Melancon trade. I am upset that every year they hold on to these prospects, they rarely call them up, it is just a carrot to the people of Pittsburgh.....always hope for next year. They are frauds.

I think the Mets are paying part of that salary.

Ohmigod........the Pirates just dumped Liriano too! To the Jays. Again, on surface that is great, but here is another $13 million that will be pocketed by ownership!

Del is right. Nutsack lovers.

And they kicked in a top ten organization prospect to get Drew Hutchinson.

HaHaHa what a trainwreck.

You lose all credibility with that statement.
If Lariano was pitching this year like he did much of last, you might be on to something. But as it is, he was killing the Pirates this season. I'm surprised we got as anything.

Liriano still has the second best stuff of any Pirates starter, and was great the past 3 years. He scuffled a bunch the first half of 2015 as well but recovered and finished pretty strong. This was an absolutely abysmal trade if it was just Liriano for Hutchinson, but to kick in one if their best prospects to boot? Horrid.

This GM has been an outright failure the past 10 months.

Smith is a lefty and is controllable through 2019. He is a better asset than Melancon and it isn't close.

The Pirates didn't just get Hearn.

Key word in the rant is WAS.
Doubtful he was going to find his mojo again.

This place is like bizzaro world. Everyone outside of here that knows baseball, thinks Nutting and his Co horts are frauds. This is not about winning baseball games.

I would have more respect for the sheep if they were honest , and admitted the Pirates are used as a tool for the tool to make money PERIOD

I am just in shock people still defend this organization.

We did NOT get value for MM, we got the 2 indian boys in the field throwing rocks again. I hope when we can't resign any of our current good players , Cole, Cutch, and I'm sure Kang when his time is up, we have another GM in place, to not get taken to the cleaners like normal
lot of dumb yinzers out there.

Pirates are trying to get Charlie Morton and Nate McClouth back....flashback to the glory years. I think they should give LaRoche a call-if he is willing to sign cheap, Nutsack won't be concerned about his son sitting in the dugout.

There's a much better chance that he 'finds his mojo' than there is NH uses that money wisely. We're talking $13m here, it was the Matt Kemp contract.

Neal Huntingdon is a buffoon. The Nutting excuse only goes so far, Nutting didn't force him to make bad trades the past 10 months.

Past the halfway point in 2014, Liriano had a 4.72 ERA and 1.50 WHIP, and finished with a 3.38 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, followed up with a 3.38 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 2015. Now the numbers in 2016 are a little worse than 2014, but there's a good chance that Liriano returns to a top of the rotation SP and the $13m next year is an absolute bargain.

Drew Hutchinson. Holy balls.

Psssst. It's not the GM.[/QUOTE]

The owner didn't make the trades. Not enough payroll was shed to blame the owner completely. These were just bad trades, one after the other.

If the situation was such that NH didn't want to make these trades, he surely is thought of well enough around the game to get another similar job ASAP, right? Most Pirates fans make him out to be the second coming if Branch Rickey.

You think NH, who cherises prospects like his own children, added those two because he thought it was a good trade? My god you are dumb.......They wanted theat contract out of Pittsburgh and NH had to do whatever to get rid of all of it

I have to agree. Even if the owner said... hey shed this contract. He needs to still do it with a modicum of respect and decency to the fans. And as others said, Liriano was still our number 2 pitcher, and that is because he still has good stuff. His speed and metrics are the same as last year. He makes bats miss though, and should have either been dealt for someone of left on the roster and we deal someone else. Im just down today cause of these deals. I lived through being a fan for those 19 years and this kinda thing happened all the time (actually, no trades were this bad) and thought we were over that, well, we arent. We are saving money by drafting guys ranked in the 60s in the first round (Tucker, would out Conner Joe, but he wasnt even in the top 200 and we got him 33rd.), we closed the spending internationally that enabled us to get Polanco, Marte and others, and now we are trading away future high level prospects so a team can take on a meager 13 mil salary of our number 2 ace. How is that rebuilding??? It isnt. We could have added a piece for McGuire or Rameriz. Are either going to be stars??? Who knows, but they are 21 years old and already in AA. I mean, lots of baseball and work out left in both. I personally think both these guys are projectable, both have sweet swings if anyone ever saw them live like I have. I dont mind Huch for Liriano straight up, totally doesnt bother me. It is adding these other 2 that just showed me we arent in the fight anymore.

We were never trying to win , if we were, we wouldn't have went into the season with such crap in the rotation. The white flag was raised a month before season started

Continue to believe that. Neal Huntington has been completely incompetent for the past 10 months. You can trade players a dump salary without giving up two of your top ten prospects.

Also, remind us who signed Liriano to that contract?

Neal Huntington wouldn't trade top ten prospects to try to acquire someone to help this team win a division or pennant or title, but he traded two to dump a market value salary.

Fact! Even his hard core defenders cannot argue

I reached the same conclusion maybe ten or fifteen years ago. Winning hasn't been a priority. More of a by-product. The last three seasons only wet the appetites of people and they had to back down before they were backed into doing something big to make a legitimate run. Yesterday put an end to that.

Small market...can't compete...deck is stacked...blah, blah, blah.
