Pitt @ Miami Game Thread

Lowe ain't getting that call. Maybe at home. But not on the road against the best player on the court. Use your brain, Jeff
Or the refs could actually be in position to make the right call. At no level of basketball can you legally reach your arms horizontally over a shooter and hit them in the head as they begin their shot.

Also, Omier isn't MJ or LeBron, despite Fede doing his best to make him look like it at times today. He shouldn't get the benefit of the doubt.

We outscored Miami in the paint and almost 60% of our total shots attempts were from 3 today. And Miami has Omier and we start Fede, LOL.

Opinions can differ and that is fine. I could pick on Fede for choosing to not guard Omier on wide open 3s which he did twice, or pick on Lowe for not taking a free layup earlier in the game which would have put the score tied and put the game in overtime but he chose to shoot the 3 instead where he missed it.

Carrington was the main difference. He was good on the glass and his passing, but needs to start taking better shots and get into the flow of the offense better. I believe there was also a missed opportunity where he drove and could have had an easy dumpoff for a dunk and instead forced the shot and missed it. He's just a freshmen. But we need a more well rounded performance by someone with actual high expectations to perform at a higher level. We lost by 4 and that was the main difference in my view.

Bro, Lowe leaned into him. You might get that in the first half, not at the end of the game. You think any other decently coached team is drawing THAT up? Id rather have seen Hinson try a contested 28 foot moonshot.

Right. But he's best player on the court. Smh. Oh, and Diaz should have been on the floor for that last shot. What does Fede give u on that? Dumb

Not sure I have EVER seen a team trail by 19 points under 10 minutes and win.

It looks like had we pulled it off it would have been tied for the second largest deficit to come back from to win a game. In 1960 we were down 54-32 to Purdue with 16 minutes to go in the game and won 81-80. In 2012 we were down to Oakland 48-30 with 11:34 left in the second half and won 72-62 in overtime.

Twice we were down 19 in the first half and came back and won, in 1970 against the Hoopies and in 1963 against Southern Cal.

When Capel called the timeout I knew we were done. Has Capel ever dialed a last play to successfully win a game?
I would love to know what was discussed during that TO.

I think he should have held onto it and had no expectation that he was going draw up something that led to a wide open shot, but I find it hard to believe he told them to inbound it as far from the hoop as possible then stand around while Lowe dribbles around until attempting a very low percentage shot.

Yeah, he was the best player on the court. Games like today were why I was hoping Kante would play this season (understanding hope was a large element of that statement), since we have no answer for someone like Omier.

Valient comeback but we lost because we were outrebounded, didn't play defense in the first half and got ourselves too far behind to matter, and we missed FT's. Bub is too inconsistent. He's a freshman so hopefully with time, he'll get better. Lowe and Hinson in the second half helped to make this a game late. Too little, too late. We dug ourselves a 19 point hole and not even some magic from Lowe could help that.

I'm going to have to watch the second half again. I hope their ball movement improved. It sucked big time in the first half.

No one was expecting Federiko to match Omier, or even come close to him (if they are sane), but

Omier: 36 minutes, 18 points on 8-13 from the field, 10 rebounds
Federiko: 32 minutes, 3 points on 1-1 from the field, 4 rebounds

is a lot to overcome.

He did step out once... which resulted in a highlight dunk.
This is how effed up Vader is. He thinks Fede chose to do that and that it wasn’t stamped by the coaches. Omier is averaging .6 made 3’s per game this year. You absolutely want him taking 20 foot jump shots instead of blowing past. And the second one was an OK hand.

I guarantee the scouting report said to let him shoot those.

Oh of course it was by the coaches. Capel constantly tells our guys to sag on perimeter shooters. And players with low shooting percentages often have burned us by it. I can't stand the way we constantly sag and lay off. And we still cant rebound well because we are incredibly weak rebounding the ball in the frontcourt. The top 2 rebounding players on our basketball team are Carrington and Leggett, which is comical and sad at the same time.

Omier is a little different. After todays game he is now shooting 40% from 3 on the season. And he just came off his best offensive performance of his college career and made 2-3 from 3 on the road last game.

That wasn't a foul

Look at my post above with the Twitter link.

So in the sport of basketball, a player sometimes tries to stop the other player from shooting the basketball. If said player hits him in the middle of the head instead, that is called a foul.

Underwhelming last play - but if you are critiquing coaching, you have to give Capel credit. Not sure I have EVER seen a team trail by 19 points under 10 minutes and win.

"Critiquing coaching? "Give Capel credit?" Sorry, but he blew it when he
called that TO. When there's that little time left you either let em play
and not call a TO.....or you call an immediate TO and not let the clock
wind down even further. That indeciveness cost us time on the clock, and
we had to get it up court and get off a shot within 10 seconds. Is it doable?
Yes it is, but why put your team in that situation? If he called it immediately.
and even with the pass into the backcourt, we would have more time to get
something better than what Lowe was left with.

If the defender's arms even come down from vertical while defending a shooter, that is a foul. The defender reached his arms horizontally over Lowe and hit him. That is clearly a foul.

I get it - but if we were the ones that blew the 19 point lead, people would be bitching about being “outcoached”. We wouldn’t be saying “damn, what a great effort to get up by 19”

So some credit is due for that.

Its a judgement call. And if I was an official, no frigging way I'm calling that a foul.

I want to see that again when I watch the game on Hulu. I don't know if Lowe took a pivot step into the defender. But I'll take your word for it.
Does it supersede the hand on the arm? Not sure. But he originally lined up for a 3 and stepped over the line by the time the shot up. And they’re never giving anyone that call in crunch time.

I thought Lowe pushed the defender off by driving his head in the mid section before being fouled?

OK, Ill go with ya on the comeback and give Capel some credit for that.
Total credit?....No, because the players had to execute, and they did.
The wasted time on the clock before the TO call is all on him. No player
lack of execution was the problem. You either let em play or call the
TO immediately. He was indecisive, and let time go off the clock, thus
giving us a 10 second opportunity instead of more time. Clock mgmt
is the coaches job. Anyway, you're right about a very good comeback.

U were wrong. They should give it. It's not like it's tied, then I could see that. He still had 2 free throws to make just to tie it and Miami still had 5 seconds left if he did. It should've been called.

That’s a good attempt. But I wasn’t wrong. I said he leaned into him. Meaning he pivoted into his arm. Watch it again. He lines up for a 3 then pivots in. They’re NEVER calling that. Not home, away. Anything.

He's got his arm and head but I think it was said that's no where near a foul.
If you look at a screenshot of someone leaning into someone’s arms it could certainly skew your idea of what a foul is. But Jeff Capel was 4 inches from it and just turned the other way.

Well you , in person , still pretended to see the ball off bub clearly - even though it took 9 minutes to aee it , and even national writers calling it a blown call

Obviously not a call anyone ever is gonna make. That’s not a foul. He sets up for a jump shot, he pivots forward into the defender. This ain’t the NBA. They don’t call that? Why is this so hard to grasp because a Pitt fan took a favorable screenshot?
