Steelers / Draft

I'd be curious to see what % of BIG and SEC picks started in a different conference. They're going to dominate the drafts as long as transferring keeps up at this level.
From left to right on the defensive line of scrimmage you have:
Watt Wisconsin
Sawyer OSU
Black Iowa
Benton Wisconsin
Harmon oregon(and formerly Mich st)
Heyward osu
Highsmith UNCC
Herbig Wisconsin

And yeah, in todays CFB, Highsmith probably wouldn’t have been at Charlotte his last year.

I was hoping they’d draft Howard. I think he’s more athletic than McCord. Solid late round pick.

Again this appears to be a solid draft. Not bad not great. Addressed some needs. This team clearly is still away from being a contender. But hopefully this lays a decent foundation Next years draft is huge

Typical Steeler pick there

1) nepotism
2) B1G

I'm convinced they're baking this into contracts as a fringe benefit.

"So the travel meals per diem is $150 per day and, oh, did I tell you about what we do if you have a brother or son with NFL aspirations? You're going to love this..."

I mean as a 7th rounder who will be a special team player-
I’d say that’s fine

Now that the 3rd midway - safe to assume the Pickens for a 3rd won’t be happening ?
:)
I’m not going to look for it, but I told you that the Steelers only reason for not trading George is because the Cowboys didn’t offer what the Steelers wanted. So the Steelers got their 3rd round offer afterall and jumped at it. It’s also now being reported that in earlier discussions between the cowboys and Steelers, the cowboys were offering a 4th.

With this trade, it's safe to start reviewing the previous five drafts and its impact on the current roster.

2020 - Best players aren't on the team anymore.
2021 - Probably the most disastrous in terms of what you could have drafted and all you have left is Pat Freiermuth.
2022 - Calvin Austin and Connor Heyward. Kind of speaks for itself.
2023 - Broderick Jones probably won't have any competition in camp this year so he's probably the starter. Joey Porter Jr. is serviceable. Keeanu Benton appears to be solid. Nick Herbig might be the best day 3 pick in a while. Might end up being their best draft in the last ten years if Jones can play well enough to get a second contract.
2024 - Number one pick has one NFL start (over the '23 #1, BTW). Frazier was okay last year. Mason McCormick is probably the star of this draft, right now.

Even if you don't like my evaluation, it's still very easy to argue that the Steelers just aren't getting much meaningful talent out of their drafts or they're not able to do anything the talent and end up giving it away.

THE STEELERS ARE TERRIBLE AT EVALUATING TALENT.

If that 2023 class is your best in a decade... that explains a lot.

How many guys going back to 2015 have the Steelers signed to a 2nd contract? I see friermuths name but I wonder how many others? Watt might be the only 1st rounder, which is an embarrassment. Other players who might have got a 2nd contract are Highsmith, Rudolph, Edmunds, Loudermilk, Dionte (which was a poor decision and we knew it at the time). I can’t think of any others.

Pathetic.

There is another issue that speaks volumes about the success of the draft. "Pickens is so talented! How could they trade him?!" Very true, but your club doesn't have enough veteran talent willing to reign him in when he's crying around after the team wins. His value ends up being diminished because he didn't get the TD pass thrown to him, even though he made the forty yard reception that set it up. This happens again and again. We saw this starting to bubble to the surface when AB started to come unhinged. Probably no coincidence that it was right around the time when the locker room enforcers were all retiring. You don't have many veterans that have been in the franchise for a long time and the one's you do have either aren't leaders, for their own personal reasons, or they aren't allowed to shut nonsense down.

So, you have talented guys that end up sliding off the rails or you are just are missing badly on these picks. Nasty combination.

Bingo.

and here’s where the one Pickens supporter doesn’t get it. He was a net negative here. If he was a 2000 yard receiver with 15 TDs then maybe you put up with his crap. But with the limited production he provided, he became more headache than what he’s worth.

There’s a reason why GMs didnt have the guy on their draft board. And there’s a reason why GMs weren’t lining up to trade for him when it was obvious Tomlin soured and he was being shopped. It’s difficult to win with guys like that. But there will always be coaches who think they can turn them into assets. Tomlin was one of them. And now that Mike knows he can’t, George is gone.

It wasn’t going to happen here. George wasn’t worth the headache and certainly not worth a new contract. Maybe a new coach and franchise can make him a net positive player. But this coach and franchise couldn’t. So adios.

Colbert’s last five drafts will have produced maybe 4 starters on this year’s team. Three of which (Rudolph, B Jones, and Friermuth) are replacement level at best.

Edit: B Jones was a Khan pick so even as mid as he has been remove him and Colbert’s drafting looks worse.

Two things can be true on the Juju thing: Did a portion of the fanbase overreact to his antics and make them out to be a bigger deal than it was? Probably. Was he a kind of a buffoon who it was time to move on from? Also probably

Don't deflect but attending to your social media during pregame isn't the priority most people want to see. Not sure you're all that dialed in to the task at hand but hey, that's just me. Not nearly as bad as being a cry baby over not being the one to get to score a TD.
You and madden need to shot into the sun .

Nah. He wasn't a bad person (well, other than all the high schooler's DMs he was sliding into while he was here) but a lot of people found him thoroughly unlikable and were happy to be rid of him. C+ player who thought he was a superstar.

Juju wasn’t a bad guy. He was actually a good guy. He just could just be a distraction at times. But that’s not unlike plenty of other receivers. But that’s ultimately what turned me away from Madden and when I finally stopped listening as the Schtick got old and over the top.

Yep. His targets and narratives which then meant his columns and shows wrote themselves. It is boring and certainly not provocative. I mean his Shadeur Sanders column was dead nuts on that ESPN determines what the stories are not the actual games/sport/performance, and still in that column had to take a gratuitous shot at Pickett.

As unproductive as these drafts have been, do have to wonder how we haven't had a losing season?

Watt was the last rookie option taken. Jones is the next possible one.

Frankly, the stillers are largely full of shit when it comes to Pickens. He's a "distraction", that was his reputation at Georgia. Even Kirby Smart disciplined him, and Kirby doesn't care that his program is out of control.

Now they sent their most talented WR away because he's a distraction while pining over a walking circus of comically offensive stupidity to play QB.. Cool.

I'm sure there are people who would say that in the NFL but this is the Steelers letting go of a player so there will be more hit pieces coming.
Yep-
Seems to be the priority for this franchise lately .
Protect the shield with all the Baghdad Bobs in the media .

I’ll point out - it’s ironic that folks here think the front office is incompetent- yet are happy when they do something they agree with -
Which should give them pause about the moves
