The Buccos

Maybe I'm mistaken but wasn't there high hopes for this bullpen this year ?
I'll reserve judgement on why Jones was pulled but anything less than an injury is bull. 59 pitches in 5 innings ?

They've had some guys miss time, and I think it still grades out well as bullpens go. But it seems like they've taken turns blowing leads lately.

That was absolutely enraging. And I agree, anything short of an injury is disgraceful. I’d have a hard time remembering a more dominant first 59 pitches from a starter at least since Cole left town.

50 of 59 pitches for strikes thru 5 innings with 1 weak bloop single. Plan was to have him only go 5 innings and that obviously was regardless of the pitch count.

So if that weak bloop single had been caught and not just a no-hitter but a perfect game in play, would they have still taken him out after 5 innings? My guess is yes.

Bad news, Bucs losing again. Good news, Bailey Falter only threw 70 pitches so he should be available to help lose games all the way through September!

You simply had to get him out of there at that point. Two whole runs in five innings? The horror! Have to protect this young stud on his big one-year deal.

My wife and her family are all Orioles fans and I can’t help but be jealous of them. They currently have six guys with 4+ HR’s, we have zero. And bigger picture - despite also sucking a few years ago, they suddenly have this ridiculously deep lineup, farm system and even new ownership to boot.

At least the Pirates won that series over them, although they’ll probably have at least like 20 more wins by season’s end.

Pirates should have a decent future with a Skenes-Jones-Keller staff and Hayes, Reynolds, Cruz, etc. But it just never works out that way, so I'm going to need to see it. Cole-Glasnow-Taillon, Polanco-McCutchen-Marte... just never works out to be as great as we think it sounds.

Everyone yells at me when I say things like this.

No doubt. Unfortunately going into this season I kind of accounted for a few disappointments among our core, and that’s been the case so far. It’s a long season at least. Not being able to put Davis in that mix because of how awful he’s been early on too is damning for a #1 overall pick… but we’ll see I guess.

Keep drinking that filthy nutbag kool-aid. At least they didn't go 20-8 before disaster strikes this year. O'Neal Cruz is a strikeout specialist, but, he isn't the only one. The suspected weakness was starting pitching, but, to this point, it has been quite a strength. Unfortunately, Shelton apparently has been told that Noone can throw more than 70 pitches. Leaving a bullpen that was thought to be a strength, just completely giving games away, while Pirates batters continue to flail away in the late innings. Typical Buccos!

They're certainly beginning to come into focus. What once looked like a distance and exotic UFO of some sort is actually... a fluttering city pigeon named Pedro Alvarez.

Well you have so spend some cash on the supporting players as well. The Pirates recent history is they never spend the money to fill out the team and make it competitive. Right now the bullpen is killing them They have no first baseman Other than Reynolds the jury is out on the outfield and catcher They still need more talent

It’s way too early to count out Cruz and some of the younger guys. Lots of great players struggled early. But he and the rest of the young guys are struggling mightily at the plate

Bullpen should be fine this year (should be) eventually, but it's such a year to year thing that I don't even care. As long as they fix it next year, when we actually have a chance to make the playoffs (a chance - not saying we will).

If they can't drop some money on an outfielder and a first baseman or DH to complement the Skenes-Jones-Keller trio these next few years then they can flat out kiss my ass. Unfortunately, next season's first baseman will probably just be some AAAA guy we get for trading Chapman.

We are absolutely enamored with former high prospects who never panned out. Jose Tabata, Andy LaRoche, Ike Davis, Lastings Milledge, Travis Snyder, Jeff Clement... the list goes on. Were you a one-time top 50 Baseball of America prospect who is now 27 years old and being called a massive bust? Well we may have a job for you!

By putting sports in the proper life context. They are simply a diversion.

Your last four comments:

It's getting harder to care..... with each passing year we get further from real college athletics and closer to minor leagues for the NFL and NBA. NIL and the transfer portal have ruined college athletics. I'll still get our season tickets because I love Pitt, but it seems increasingly futile without deep pocketed boosters.
Wahhhhhhh 😢

You people are f*cking ridiculous. It's as if you've never watched baseball before. Good players struggle at times. Great players struggle at times. Against all odds the Pirates are 10-4 right now....and Bednar got the 9th inning save....and Henry Davis was 2-3 with 2 RBI's. Chapman pitched 2/3 of an inning and walked 2 people....he must suck now....
Wahhhhh 😪

Paying for gossip and opinion seems kinda silly to me.....and honestly, it's not that impactful if you have any sort of life going on. It's a fun diversion.

I get our Season Tickets regardless, because I'm a Pitt fan. It's not that complicated.
Wahhhhhhh 😓

Yeah, but it was driving me nuts to see all the missed layups when she dropped a dime to one of her teammates.
😭😭😭😭😭

And now you're whining about whining. You really like that "diversion" line, eh? Such a weird sanctimonious mission to come on a sports board to try and convince everyone you're too good to care about sports. But you do you, man.

If any of you would like to hit a major league HR, hurry down to PNC Park, Quinn Priester is giving them out like Halloween candy

What a sorry bunch of hitters. This team can't hit real major league pitching. That's OK tho, they are going to be really good soon!!!

Its usually because of pitching. If you have 5 "ace" pitching prospects you should expect one to pan out, one to turn into a 4th starter, one to be a middle reliever, one to suck, and one to have his arm tendons explode. Even when they pan out they are rarely healthy at the same time. The Mets had Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Steven Matz and Zach Wheeler for 3-4 years together and I don't know if they ever made a turn of the rotation with all 5 in tact. You have to spend money on pitchers if you want to win. It's a numbers game/ war of attrition. And Bobby Nutting doesn't play those games.

Small market teams (Indians, A's, Rays, and Royals) have assembled some nice staffs and made deep playoff runs. It's possible, but it's certainly less likely when you're a penny pinching tight ass.

I don't want to tarnish the good name of Nutting too much, as I don't feel like battling his #1 fluffer on here.

I am fairly skeptical with the Pirates and yet I can actually see a strong rotation coming together. Keller and Jones are already in the bigs and Skenes will be any day (week) now. Then for this year and the next few, you fill it out with Perez, Gonzalzez, Chandler, Burrow, etc...whomever is healthy and doing well in 4-5 slots. I know things can still go sideways, but the starting pitch offer real promise.

The issue for the Pirates is their offense is pitiful and no hope on the way. Their 'big money' players Hayes and Reynolds are nice, solid MLB players....not stars. The next group of guys like Cruz, Suwinski, Triolo., Davis...will be lucky to be nice, solid MLB players at their peak sometime. Then of course all the retreads like Rowdy, Taylor, etc Collectively this is just a week offensive group with no star power. It's just not good enough.

O'Neal Cruz is the most overated bum ever. 4 for his last 41, with 20 strikeouts. He must be a 6'6" blind man. The only time he ever puts the balll in play is when the pitcher accidentally hits his bat with the ball.

Where are all the nutbag lovers?? Come out and show yourselves, you were there to admonish me for saying they were going to suck. This team could be the worst hitting team in baseball. They continually pop up or strike out with the bases juiced. They don't get to go against Miami Marlins pitching every week. Lol. Where are the board menaces Joe and Wanstash??

I have never seen a major league team take as many third strikes as these Bucs.

Do they not know how to protect with two strikes?

Maybe they can bring up Skenes to pitch 3 innings. Lol, that will save them!
I gotta admit, Madden had a good one in his article dumping on the Bucs. After getting on them for their measly pitch count limitations he jokingly says they should bring Skenes up, have Jones throw 50 and then Skenes take over to throw the next 50. That will take care of one slot in the pitching rotation even if it does leave an inning or so for the bullpen to blow it.

So, you're sticking with your narrative that I am a Nutting supporter??
Prove it.
News flash: He's cheap! Everyone knows that. Flash #2, He owns the team, isn't selling, and there's nothing anyone can do about it.

This thread is nothing but a boring chant of the same mantra.
Enjoy.
There's a better Pirates thread on the pay board where nuance and actual baseball discussion takes place.
Be sure to stay here.
