Transfer commitment thread (not just Pitt players)

Oh...so before last season started you looked at the roster and said.."this group will be solid due to their experience." I believe in trends and results as well and last year's result may have Pitt trending in the right direction. Let's just take a wait and see approach.

Exactly....like I said, wait and see. It's undefined right now.

We can compete with the current roster,but......

There is no reason not to improve it

If we are going to add now, there needs to be some urgency.

Hopefully, there are some Plan Bs in play.

No surprise there based on what I heard.

Its an interesting discussion for sure. This team could be better. Its possible. But it could be worse. Here's how it could be better:

PG - Dior is Judah Mintz but more under control, less selfish, and overall better

SG - Leggett could be much better than the Elliot/Nike combo

SF - Austin has to defend and rebound. He won't score like Burton but maybe his defending and rebounding make up for it

PF - Hinson improves marginally or at least doesnt regress

C - Fede improves a ton. He has athleticism but was very raw. Lots of upside

Bench
Improvements from the twins and Jeffress

1 or 2 freshman are good right away
So wait, you said Judah Mintz was a lottery pick. You think a kid that had zero options besides Pitt is BETTER than that?

BTW, no one has him in the first round NOW. Wait til they see him workout and review his game tape. Bad bad predictions by you on this one… AGAIN

SMF makes a lot of assumptions that are not likely to occur.

Considering the off season portal results and understanding the competitive landscape of the ACC, I'm being optimistic in saying Pitt will get to 16 - 18 wins total this year, including the ACCT. And that would be a few steps backwards and put Capel on shaky ground at a minimum. He's going to have to do a lot better than that.

Not thrilled with the portal, I hope I’m wrong. I think this will have to be Capel’s best coaching effort to date.

Didn’t you say the same thing last year curmudgeon?

I think some of this is looking at last year’s roster with the benefit of hindsight. At this time last year, you could fairly describe the roster as the following:

Nelly - undersized, athletically limited combo guard who’s never played point guard, and we’re asking him to play point guard
Burton - high usage, inefficient off ball guard who has a tendency to pound the ball and take too much upon himself
Elliott - athletically limited 3 point specialist who wasn’t asked to return to Marquette
Sibande - high usage, inefficient off ball guard who is coming off of a serious knee injury
Hinson - has not played in two years, maybe still battling health issues?
Jeffress - among the worst offensive ACC player in years
Santos - three point specialist who shot 25% as a freshman
Diaz-Graham Twins - out-recruited UMass for both
Fede - was processed at West Virginia
Hugley - was viewed as the centerpiece of the team
Dior - was still committed to Oregon at this time last year
McNeilly - was not on the radar at this time last year

It’s fair to say that the totality of those players, minus Hugley, exceeded expectations. But we’re viewing them the way that we view them now, and viewing them as irreplaceable as we view them, because they exceeded the same kind of expectations that we’re putting on the roster now.

Is it possible for the team to be better? Sure For that to happen, Fede has to develop an offensive game and the twins will need to get a LOT stronger as well. Hinson will need to get in shape and play better D and develop a handle to be more than a spot up shooter.

Dior has to actually play and mature fast. They'll need the true frosh and the transfers all to play at a high level. THe biggest concern is replacing JB and the clutch performance of Nellie and company. They all came through in the games most critical moments.

I wont say it cant or wont happen but its a tall order. JC will have done a hell of a job to get the team to come close to this years level of play.

I will say based on the year they had, Im not sure how you cant be at least a bit disappointed in the transfers they've gotten so far. Not saying they are terrible but I was expecting a bigger step up in talent based on the teams success and style of play.

I'm there as well. Disappointed in what we are getting in the transfer portal, based on thinking the success we had last year would help carry over into any kind of portal results. I was misjudging what we're capable of getting at this point with what has been called a great recruiter by some.

I'll be disappointed if we don't get another guard up to my standards.
It's looking less likely now.

WELL SAID!!!!

Now everyone is a portal evaluation expert - but a year ago these same experts couldn't tell you jack chit about the players coming in to the program. Headscratcher isn't it?
Miserable sacks that are just looking for a reason to tear down Capel.

That’s definitely all true, but that roster which we now know on paper was good enough for last 4 in. Do you think this roster has improved from last year?

It’s not dumping on Capel if you’re giving him credit for landing and developing one of the best 3 players in the conference… that’s a good thing last time I checked

People are just expressing concern. Had Pitt landed Thomasson, most of the same people would be expressing optimisim..

If there were currently identified reasonable alternatives to Thomasson, any expressions of concern would reflect that.

Like I stated in a previous post, in the day of the transfer portal - there can be reasonable alternatives to anyone in a matter of hours.

We have 2 openings. A shooter who can give you about 20 mins and a developmental big are the 2 realistic possibilities. He has 3 months to add a player. It will probably come out of left field like in the past.

In theory this year's team could be better but not get as far and miss the tourney.
Last years team had guard experience that this team just doesn't have.

It’s a weird situation. I mean sort of disappointed but it is hard to get talent when you return quite a bit. They were already returning 2 starters, and then the twins who could take a step forward.

They had a lot of guards that did the same thing, shoot 3s. If Dior and Leggett have more well rounded games and if Jeffress plays D, the team could be decent. Hinson must return. Then you have a year older Fede and twins. And maybe one of the fresh is decent right off the bat.

Anyone who enters the portal now unless they are a grad transfer is ineligible to play next year.

Theoretically.
Incorrect, may 11th is the deadline for basketball, football is may 1st. Although likely anyone who enters now already knows where they are going

Yeah I just don’t see any way this team is better than last year’s. Burton is a huge hole to fill
This year’s team will be much improved defensively. Dior and austin are much better defenders than cummings and elliott. If hinson wants to go the nba he needs to improve defensively, and jeffress is a great defender. Burton’s offense will be missed but the increase in defense will compensate for it

I agree but to be fair did anyone foresee JB stepping up and being as good as he was last year ? I suppose someone else or a few collectively could fill that void.
I think Leggett replaces Burton. Austin replaces Nike.

That leaves Cummings and Elliot to replace. MaybeDior/Lowe fill Cummings? maybe Carrington fills Elliot?

Regardless,I want another good, experienced guard

Do not want to go from 4 experienced guards to only 1.

That would not be prudent.

Need toget another visitor in soon.

Dior johnson is a better defender than Cummings based on what?

Elliot had at least defended at the P6 level, there’s no telling how Austin is gonna transfer up from a bad D1 league off a bad team.

Hinson won’t be better defensively unless he loses a lot of weight and what will they miss offensively if he’s the same weight and is better defensively?

Jeffress is unplayable

Not to the extent he did, but he was 24. Other than Hinson who do we have that has played on a high level that we think can make that step. And Hinson moves so poorly laterally it makes me wonder if they need to oil his joints

And yet stating they're taking a "wait and see approach". Go figure.

I've been consistent in taking the wait and see approach ever since the season ended. Recently however, the recruiting results have not been encouraging, to say the least. And too many unknown variables now.
