2023 Scholarship Board Look Ahead

With recruiting about to pick back up, people always ask what our scholarship situation is, so I figured I'd take a second to put this together (Updated 12/16). A few notes:

- Including currently committed recruits, there are 85 names listed below
- This includes all possible Super Seniors for 2023, but obviously many of these guys will not be back
- Calijah Kancey and/or Israel Abanikanda are likely to depart early for the NFL, but are listed for now
- Anybody who has entered the Transfer Portal as of this morning is not included, and I would expect at least a few more guys to go
- Since Habakkuk Baldonado and SirVocea Dennis both accepted invites to postseason bowl games, I am assuming they are gone
- Rashad Battle, Brandon George, and Buddy Mack each had not redshirted prior to 2022 and played in less than four games this year, so I'm assuming they'll all take a redshirt
- All of our Freshmen this year will redshirt, except for Sam Vander Haar
- If a player's name is in red font, that means they have used a redshirt going into 2023; if a player has an asterisk next to their name, they are Super Senior eligible at some point beyond 2023

Initial NET rankings out

PITT coming in at 79, which is 7th in ACC. Solid wins at NC State and Northwestern. Loss to 11 WVU and neutral site Quad 3 to VCU and Michigan. Vandy is Quad 3 and is a must win, however, should be pleased with initial standing as does make an at large run potentially feasible.

The Morning Pitt: 12/6/2022 - The quarterback merry-go-round

If it seemed like there was a lot of quarterback activity for Pitt on Monday, it's because there was, as the Panthers lost one quarterback to transfer, added one quarterback via transfer and landed a commitment from a high school recruit. On today's Morning Pitt, we're breaking down all of the latest developments.

WELCOME TO CRAZY UNCAPPED FREE AGENCY…

Now that we live in a Portal world where there are no longer an annual 25 scholarship limit (just 85 scholarship max limit), some HCs have decided to game the system…

There are some who are goin’ “Full Deion/Lincoln Riley” where they tell a large portion of their team: “Pack your things. You no longer have a home here”…

They then go to their NIL Exchange Managers and say: “Here’s what I need in terms of $$$$. Make it happen”.

At that point the HC (like a NFL GM) & Unlimited Administrative Football Staff (like a Capologist) determine how to apply the NIL monies to “ensure” signings.

HCs are now looking to re-configure upwards of 30% of their roster in one year…

Huge SEC/B1G schools with highly capitalized NIL organizational structures will run rough-shod over the less capitalized NIL schools…

The result?

1. Inequitable competition. The rich NIL schools will most assuredly dominate the competition for Championships.
2. Many more student athletes will lose opportunities than ever before. Student athletes that once were able to stay and backfill starters, will now be told they must leave (losing out on a more valuable education/degree from that particular school).

Some fans of an A&M or Bama or Ohio State etc may relish the prospect of even greater dominance over the FBS landscape…. But, many more will increasingly realize that this model is both unsustainable and compromised…. And, many fans will slowly check out (see drop off in popularity of MLB from early 1990s to present)…
