Chancellor Gallagher

I attended Pitt from 1971-1975, I saw Johnny Majors and great assistants in action. They got the students interested. They would go to fraternity parties and other popular night spots on Friday and ask the students if they were coming to the game and got them all pumped up. Majors had a a meeting at 8:00 am Monday morning inviting students to attend and he would
recap Saturday’s game with a Q & A, called Majors Monday. The attendance was amazing for that time of day. Point is they got involved with the students, which exited everyone.

Majors did the same with boosters. I was just graduated from Pitt when he arrived. He'd conduct meetings up at the old Log Cabin facility at UPJ during Pitt fall camp in the evenings after practice for local boosters. They were like an old revival meeting, only with Majors playing the role of the (football) preacher. "Pride and enthusiasm" he'd holler! I used to call Johnny Pitt's "football evangelist". They didn't pass the hat, but I bet they could have. Especially after getting a look at Tony Dorsett run during scrimmages on the practice field!

I think Gallagher is pretty much worthless. Talked a big game at first then disappeared. I understand he doesn't even attend games. What a turd.
Let’s not forget he hired Barnes who intern hired Stallings who is single handily destroying the basketball program

Let’s not forget he hired Barnes who intern hired Stallings who is single handily destroying the basketball program

One of the Academic Elites who think football is to savage, dirty, loaded with male "bully's and eventually should be eliminated.

Mrs Buffett and I met two academic elite couples at a private club that we frequent at our favorite casino. Wow do they hate football!

Well he's doing his part in helping to kill Pitt sports especially football and basketball.

I guess at some point Pitt will focus on fencing, lacrosse, tennis, track, etc all those nice non contact sports.

And again, you got any actual evidence that Pitt doesn’t care? Not just hunches and uninformed opinions
Would you have even started this thread if Pitt found the end zone at the end of the last game?

Evidence??? LOL! Yes I would have started the thread.......was going to after UNC but decided not to. Do you think a CEO of any organization wouldn't be taking heat for lackluster results after year 3.

Paco can't see this because I'm blocked for disagreeing with him, but his continued insistence that Pitt is at the very bottom compared to its peers doesn't seem to be true. Look at the schools below (and only slightly above) Pitt in revenue. I think Pitt is the only program in the top 50 that doesn't have it's own stadium, by the way.

Don't know where you got that, but here is the USA TODAY link http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/

It's completely different. The one you have says WVU makes $55M in revenue. The above says it's $105M. Considering the Big XII distributed $30 some Million alone makes me question your link.

I kind of like the name Heather , but she has absolutely no P5 experience in the two major revenue areas .
I have no inside info , but I’d be willing to say she came at the right price , we’ll see how she manages a very difficult bb situation and if PN doesn’t turn the ship around next yr Fb becomes a real issue when there’s no home games against PSU and ND on theIr schedule in 19 to inflat season ticket sales . Very few people care what the volleyball and swim ( etc ) teams do , she’ll be measured by the bb and Fb teams success and the level of donations .
The Millers ,we’re really only talking about Archie , Sean was never leaving Az to come here and you might be right about Archie . Enfield is another story , he worked USC for a new deal increasing his pay from 1mill to 1.95 . That means Pitt was offering him nowhere near JDs numbers . ( what a surprise ) Pitt won’t pay to get a coach and when they move on from KS and PN you’ll see they’ll find coaches that won’t move the needle .
Regarding Lyke, I’m sure also, but with a much different level of cynicism. Pitt is not able or going to outbid and poach a coach, much less an athletic director, from a BCS school. The finances aren’t there. You’re looking an assistants, mid majors, or retreads when there’s a new opening
As for Enfield, yeah I was surprised at what USC was paying him. That said, I’m willing to bet he was quite willing to take less money to stay there than go to a place that thought it was too good for Jamie Dixon

Evidence??? LOL! Yes I would have started the thread.......was going to after UNC but decided not to. Do you think a CEO of any organization wouldn't be taking heat for lackluster results after year 3.
Interesting. Still didn’t provide any
In contrast, an administration that didn’t care wouldn’t have worked to get Pitt into the ACC

In fairness, I think that “being at the bottom” is only in reference to the other schools in the ACC. I’ve seen a few charts that verify that point: Pitt does rank at - or near - the bottom in the ACC.

Well, if it's on a message board and you found it on the internet, it must be true.

In case you missed the sarcasm, I doubt those rankings are even close to being correct. Moral of the story: what is posted on a message board and internet is probably not true more than it is true.

Great job on the exaggeration. 50 years of general stupidity will turn people off. Does Pitt get a free pass on everything?? It WAS Pitt who pushed out Jock, Jackie & Jamie. Pitt chose to let the Stadium fall apart, then declared it no longer adequate. Pitt gave extended contracts to Foge, Willard, Evans and then let them go. Pitt gave that fluffy golden parachute to SP, then let him go, Pitt hired a retread to please a bum A.D. who was dying to leave Pitt. Did Pitt get a buyout from Corvallis?? Did Pitt get a full buyout after pushing our best hoops coach out the door? Did Jock Sutherland leave Pitt because he was treated well??
You're the one sounding like a knuckledragging yinzer.
Well stated. You reap what you sow

Seriously? He provides stats from the US Dept of Education and you provide stats from the rag USA Today and have the balls to question the validity of his?? ROFLMAO!!

You realize Pitt isn't even on your "credible" USA Today list, right??

Pitt is a quasiprivate school not subject to public records request. Usa today got this from public records and tax returns. If you believe some of the other numbers you truly are a dumbass.

Perfect example is Purdue. The one list states their total revenue is 34m. The big 10 distributed 33m that year to each school. So you are going to tell me purdue donations ticket revenue etc etc was less than a million. ROTFL HAHAHAHAHA.

I made an error with the DoE data. The source is valid but I totaled on the wrong revenue field. My mistake. Pitt's total revenue is about $75M. That would put Pitt right between GT and Oregon State on the USA Today list.

I can try to repost an updated list soon.

2016 Total Football Revenue. Revenue like conference payouts are considered athletic revenue, not football revenue, so a program like Purdue ranks low here, but surpasses many ACC programs because our deal isn't nearly as good as some other conference rights deals (the ACC has the most schools and somehow the least in overall conference tv revenue), even though it is touted otherwise on here.

And again, you got any actual evidence that Pitt doesn’t care? Not just hunches and uninformed opinions
Would you have even started this thread if Pitt found the end zone at the end of the last game?
Proof is in the pudding. Two possibilities:
1. Pitt's bigwigs don't care about athletics...

or..

2. Pitt has been grossly negligent in managing athletics.

Either way, we are at the bottom of the list. My guess is it will not change.

UNC is $15M above Pitt.

This basically shows we are towards the bottom of the P5 revenues. Can you strip out what the school subsidizes?

We're not at the bottom.

Our management sucks, they make really bad decisions and they are ok with that. Again, the proof is in the pudding. You have no proof.

HAHAHA. Yet, the numbers show we are 60 out of 66 P5 schools. If that isn't towards the bottom I don't know what is. The other question is, how much is the subsidy those others schools are putting in vs Pitt. Pitt is towards the top. Because those subsidies are part of the revenue numbers listed.

It's more difficult to manage when you are have a tight budget vs your peers.

Pitt relative to like and kind programs reflects where Pitt is. They benefit from ACC and potential ACC network revenue and have a lease at Heinz that is very cheap. Pitt has a low cost venue that is in fact better than 90% of college programs. The problem is the venue is to large except for ND, PSU and probably WVU. BB is a disaster and I see no real improvement yet it still has a better potential as college BB in this area has zero competition as a sport. In summary, Pitt has resources to be OK. Unless some lighting money appears or Pitt gets lucky, Pitt simply is not a player locally in athletics. Pitts demand in football is 40k give or take. Not the worst, but the venue has economic benefits but not visually.

I'm not sure if that Doe data keeps track of the subsidize. It is just revenue. There are ways to figure it out, however.

However, part of the point is that Pitt's administration has continually dropped the ball so of course revenue would be lower (though still higher than BC, Wake and GT, all have made it to the ACC Championship Game.)

Whats next, you'll tell everyone that Gallagher didn't wreck the basketball program with his Barnes and Stallings hires.

Most programs have errors they need to fix. It's not just a Pitt thing.
I could go way back, but let’s just go with the last 13 years.

1) Nudging Walt out the door, and not providing more $ for assistants.

2) Nudging Wanny out the door, and being so damn cheap that they wouldn’t even pay for basic remodeling.

3) Paying a consulting firm to hire a woman beater in Haywood.

4) Making financial promises to Graham and then not following through.

5) WASTING $ on a golden parachute for Pederson.

6) Opening the door for Dixon to leave.

7) Hiring Stallings

Considering Pitt won 8 games 2 years in a row under Narduzzi and fans still didn't show up probably says otherwise. The fickle fans are always moving the bar.

Get rid of Steve P and we'll donate!
Get rid of Block PITT and we'll donate!
Win 8 games and we'll donate!
Wait, you did all of that, build an on campus stadium and we'll donate!

If they built an on campus stadium and won 10 games a year, then it would be that they'd have to go undefeated.
Winning 8 games is an average year for a P5 program. Having that as your outlier accomplishment seasons don't cut it. This year we are going 4-8 and our ceiling for next year is likely 6-6, with a pretty solid chance we are 4-8, again. So, let's even go out on a limb and say we go 7-6 next year. That means we will have been 27-24 under HCPN. That is bad. That is below average. That doesn't gain fans. Pitt is in a situation, which they created, where they need to build the fanbase, not maintain it. You can't do that by being below average.

The people moving the bar are the folks who have settled for mediocrity. They think it is still 1980 and winning 8 games is an accomplishment. It isn't. The bar has been pushed up because the sport now gives you an extra regular season game. It gives you games against mid majors and FCS opponents. It gives you a conference championship. It gives you a bowl game for practically every P5 team. Winning 8 in 1980 is like winning 10 now. You can't hold the standards of the past and apply them to the current landscape.

OK, then we should schedule an FCS game and 3 mid majors to pad the wins. If that is all that matters.

But then the fans won't show up because they'll say the schedule sucks.

We definitely went through a not caring period. 1940-1973 or so.
Now we're into the somewhat caring but incompetent period. Maybe 2005 to the present. Very different!

The money that was WASTED on Pederson should have been given to Dixon and Narduzzi for better assistants. Pitt mismanages the $ they do have.
Hmm, you would think Pitt was paying Pederson $2 million a year or something. Hell, Narduzzi wasn’t here for Pedersons tenure
What’s really funny is I don’t remember all this Woe Is Us crap when Pederson was the AD. I thought getting rid of him was supposed to fix everything?

Giving SP a golden parachute when he was on his way out was the crime.

That says Pitt has 9 national championships and is in the top 20 all time wins. That doesn't seem to show they don't care.
It says for 40 years we haven't accomplished anything and haven't done anything to change that since it became big business.

They absolutely should. We know for sure fans don't give a crap about playing Iowa or Oklahoma State. That is especially true when we lose to those teams. It is moronic to keep trying that and constantly hurting the program's ability to win games and generate positive momentum.

Pitt fans are never going to fill Heinz Field. Ever. It wouldn't matter if we won back to back National Championships and had the whole team returning. We would still have to count on the opponent to bring 10k+ fans from Happy Valley, Morgantown, or South Bend. It is idiotic to count on that. Plenty of programs are successful without getting 70k fans on Saturdays. However, Pitt hasn't been successful for 35 years and they constantly make decisions, which show they have no designs on trying to be successful.
