Chancellor Gallagher

Seriously? He provides stats from the US Dept of Education and you provide stats from the rag USA Today and have the balls to question the validity of his?? ROFLMAO!!

You realize Pitt isn't even on your "credible" USA Today list, right??

USA Today is more accurate to what is actually going on because they reasearched and compiled the numbers received from FOIA requests, which is why private schools aren’t on it. The are no standards for DOE reporting. Schools account and report what they want and they aren’t particularly comparable across schools.

I dunno. Seems more like a failsafe that Nordenberg put in to keep his successor from listening to the mob, getting rid of Pederson, and replacing him with someone like Barnes
SP did a very good job during his first tenure at Pitt. He got fired at Nebraska, and did a poor job his second go around here.

Haywood/Graham/Chryst, and he wanted to hire Al Golden.

No. Pederson never understood college football. Tearing down Pitt stadium will forever damn him to ranks of Pitt's worst ADs. We substituted one on college football stadium for what is now an empty convocation center and rented stadium.

I'd hate to see what kind of shape some of the posters' finances are who post on this board if they run their finances the way they suggest Pitt runs its athletic programs. I suppose they think that it's OK to borrow and borrow and borrow some more as long as it gets you that big, pretty house and expensive car in the driveway that will impress the neighbors. Too many people think this way. Too many people have the trimmings of success but their net worth is negative.

But as usual, this board is full of inaccuracies.
Do you homework. Pitt is lush in cash. The endowment is in the billion dollar range Don't shove this Pitt is poor crap.

In some instances it is more accurate. The government reporting data does not account for money designated for capital projects, which can fluctuate wildly year by year. If a school like UCF received a $100 million donation to upgrade their basketball facility, that would out them in the top 5 of the USA Today list, but then they would drop back out of the top 50 the following year. That's why a school like TAM is at the top of the USA Today list for 2016.

Haha " The admin that got Pitt into the ACC" .. You do realize that Pitt got an invite only because BC blackballed UConn? A very influential donor, ( who sits on the floor for hoops games ) told me when I asked him about nerdy and SP role in getting us into the ACC. " All Nordenberg did is answer the phone" Nerdy and his golden boy didn't do sh*t. NOW you know .. the rest of the story.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah, all powerful BC.

Was he one of the influential donors that wanted to get rid of Dixon? If so, tell him he is a jerkoff.

We’d be in the AAC or Patriot League if the current admin. was in place back then.

The endowment has NOTHING to do with Pitt athletics, unless there are specific endowments that are appropriated for athletics. The endowment you speak of is strictly for research and academics and not to be used for athletics. Pitt is lush in cash as an academic and research institution. In athletics, we are on welfare.

I suggest you do your homework and understand what Pitt's endowment really is.

Yeah, right. Talking to some big mouth, big money donor who happens to foolishly spend money for floor tickets for basketball isn't exactly credible. He's an idiot.

The previous administration got us into the ACC through some hard work and influence. This administration and your big money donor friends and his cronies are f'ing that up.

Can that money be used towards buying and building facilities related to academics? If so, why haven’t they done this when the opportunities have presented themselves?

You guys are jerk offs My donor friend liked Dixon ,he hated SP. He knows the road map you guys don't know sh*t .Yes BC had the power to block UConn as it was in its footprint douche nozzles. Nerdy didn't do a damn thing but take the invite.

This is true, as the VP of VT has said the same thing. Pitt got in because they tried, but couldn't get UCONN in, and Pitt answered the phone, that's it. Nordy and Pedey were athletic mental midgets!

Remember UVA originally blocked Va Tech from ACC it took the state govt to direct UVA to not block Va Tech . some of you guys are blow hards.

I remember that as well, strong armed , but that couldn't be done to BC, do then we were asked , that's the truth

Definitely true. However, wouldn't it be great if they could finagle a way to say the basketball and football programs are social research experiments since most wouldn't otherwise be admitted and many come from socioeconomically deprived areas? We could even take more suspect cases under this setup. We could build mixed use facilities (on campus!!) focusing on this research where the athletes could live, study, and play!

Ahhhh...to dream

It says for 40 years we haven't accomplished anything and haven't done anything to change that since it became big business.

They absolutely should. We know for sure fans don't give a crap about playing Iowa or Oklahoma State. That is especially true when we lose to those teams. It is moronic to keep trying that and constantly hurting the program's ability to win games and generate positive momentum.

Pitt fans are never going to fill Heinz Field. Ever. It wouldn't matter if we won back to back National Championships and had the whole team returning. We would still have to count on the opponent to bring 10k+ fans from Happy Valley, Morgantown, or South Bend. It is idiotic to count on that. Plenty of programs are successful without getting 70k fans on Saturdays. However, Pitt hasn't been successful for 35 years and they constantly make decisions, which show they have no designs on trying to be successful.

I really wonder, outside of a vocal group of dialed in fans and the selection committee, who actually cares about strength of schedule? Do recruits? Will a blue chip recruit turn down a Wisconsin team that consistently wins 10 games because, you know, their schedule is pretty easy?

Pitt needs to get as many Ws on the schedule each year as possible. Build some positive "on paper" buzz and start recruiting better. Then, if the foundation is built, you can improve the schedule in the off chance you're competing for a NC.

Agree.

look no further than Kansas State. When Bill Snyder got there 25 years ago they were a 1 win program. They fattened up on cupcakes...and soon won more...recruited better...and have had some nice seasons.

That is the blueprint for Pitt...particularly when no one shows up for the Iowas....Ok States.....texas A & m games.....might as well replace them with W's....

I'll be the first to admit that until recently, I preferred a quality schedule. But even if we are playing quality opponents and losing, it seems to be more important to the media and fans to win games against soup cans, and that can change the perception of our program.

Pitt needs to win games, even if it is against lower quality opponents. I'm more impressed with 8 wins against a to tier schedule, but I'm in the minority and I want what is best for this program.

I know it's a different animal, but what's funny is the MBB program got ridiculed for scheduling too easy to pile up wins. Sometimes it's a no win situation.

Absolutely and realistically, there is essentially 0% chance we ever get to that point. Our NC chances would be completely reliant on winning all our games or almost all of them and the other P5 programs having more losses. We will never get a benefit of the doubt on reputation and SOS.

They got criticized when they were competing for seeding. Pitt isn't in the conversation for anything. They aren't remotely similar.

Yup. Pretty much. That's why I was always so in favor of the supposed shift to basketball. Because during it's peak, Pitt had a way better shot to have things fall right and win a NC in hoops than in football. The arms race (in terms of donations and year after year of 5* recruits piling up on a team) is just too great in football for Pitt to make up.

The expenditures are supposed to be from the INCOME generated, not the principal. They would use bond issues to finance buildings, or run a separate campaign. It isn't a piggybank for athletics.

I am not talking about athletic facilities. PAA, Schenley, etc. They should buy up everything they can in and around the area.

They'd still be restricted to some degree. They walked away from Schenley because of asbestos, I think.
How dumb would it be that Pitt had billions ready to buy in Oakland? Prices would skyrocket, Mayor 7-chins would fight to get more taxes, and chaos would ensue. There are practical limits to managing growth. Pitt's grown in size mostly from research funding.....with PA always cutting funding, growth should be carefully handled, not just throw $$$ at a lot of property. Bigger ain't always better......should they buy the slumlord's shacks and then tarp them?

The administration that got Pitt into the ACC is gone. Those guys presided over Pitt becoming a top 10 hoops program. The current people are batting .000.
True, but the whole Pitt Administration Doesn’t Care bit also existed here when Nordenberg and Pederson were in charge
I think the debate with the current administration is whether they are incompetent or just have to deal with too thin of a margin for error. They did know how to appease the mob with red meat though
