I thought this was a big factor in Cole's match with Eierman yesterday, when he kept connecting on shots but his hands slipped off Eierman every time. It seems like sweaty palms slide off of #1 ranked wrestlers at a much higher rate than everyone else, because that #1 ranking is in your head.
Btw, that was by far Eierman's closest match of the tournament so far. Tech fall, 5-3 decision, pin, pin. Cole is gonna be a problem as an upperclassman.
I can always tell when they overreact to shots and stumble around. These guys are so good positionally, when you see them flopping around it’s usually nerves.
Hayden Hidlay will end up being that guy who you say, "How did he never win an NCAA title?!?!"

He should have known better. They’ve wrestled so many times that it didn’t make sense.
That reminds me, no one mentioned on the broadcast that Smith majored Wentzel last year
I dont think he did actually. I think Smith instinctively took bottom, then he looked to Ryan. Smith then hesitated a few seconds, then reiterated down. I think Smith chose irrationally and was stuck with it.
But they havent wrestled since early last season, and Jake has improved a MASSIVE amount on top since then. Perhaps, Smith was lulled into familiarity of not thinking Jake to be the top guy he is righy now.

Jake won last year matchup 3-2. Was his first top 15 win. That major might have been Jake's soph year or an early season tourney?
