NET Rankings updated…

The whole Pitt offense last night was created by consistent dribble penetration attacking the interior by the 2 Pitt freshmen guards and Leggett. Duke couldn't stop it. We have not done this all season long. For most of the season, all this team wanted to do was jack up long range mid range shots and 3s and pass the ball around the perimeter.

On the season, 45% of our total shot attempts have been from 3, which is absurd. Last night, 30% of our total shots were from 3.

Before the Louisville game I said things could turn around based off Jaland Lowe making a move and being aggressive attacking the interior with dribble penetration. The post is still unedited. Finally, half way into the season, not only is Lowe starting, but finally we saw our offense attack relentlessly off the bounce into the interior, and Duke got boatraced in the paint because of it.

Yes. Duke's on ball defense is atrocious.

Leggett and Lowe have played as you just described every single game I have watched.

You ate right. "Dukel" could not stop it.

Then we are watching completely different games. Because Lowe has been hesitant to do it most of the season and I have comments on this board after literally every Pitt game saying it over and over.

Most of what Lowe has done has come from driving to the goal. Every single game.

You are missing the point.

Doing it a few times a game is not doing it consistently all game long for the full season as a starting point guard. Lowe wasn't even starting before 4 games ago. Coming off the bench playing 8 minutes a game against teams like Clemson and West Virginia furthers my point.

Before this season started and after the first 12 games of the season, my message was that Jaland Lowe needs to be a balanced point guard to maximize this teams strengths. After the last 2 games where Lowe had back to back big games off the bench against #8 North Carolina and Syracuse on the road, I want Lowe to be a scoring point guard while constantly attacking the inside with dribble penetration like Krauser while looking for his teammates. His midrange game is starting to roll. There is too much dead weight in the offense with catch and shoot players that dont want to drive the ball and are game watching. Lowe can beat these 4 and 5 star players off the bounce, he needs to juice his confidence up an go and enter attack mode. The more his shots continue to fall 12-15 feet and in, his confidence will soar which will greatly help his team. I am very pleased with his development, especially on the defensive end. He needs to pass on the 3s and attack the inside.

And I followed that up a day later January 3rd saying Lowe needs to start

So was he "hesitant" to do it or is that how he plays?

They’ve gotta really go on a run.

And don’t look now, but WVU is quickly approaching Q2. Maybe this team with Hinson has enough piss and vinegar to collect a few road scalps over the next few weeks and make things a little interesting.

Ok. You wanted Lowe to start. You wanted less focus from the team on threes.

Leggett and Lowe were never focused on threes.

His shots were not falling earlier. He couldn't score like he was used to doing in high school andin the EYBL because the shots were just rimming out so he was content with passing along the perimeter and being a backup scoring option. In the early part of the season, you could tell he was nervous with his decision making with dribble penetration because he had turnover problems and the short range game wasn't working for him. It took until late December to settle him down.

Have u just started following college basketball? To get a huge road upset you need to shoot well from three. Pitt was 50%which was huge
Maybe go back and read the rest of the chain...

I don't think it's reasonable to think this team can consistently pull off the miracle of last night.

No probably not. Winning at Cameron is virtually impossible but luckily the rest of the games will be easier.

Pitt moves up 3 spots in the NET after the win at GT last night from 69 to 66. A win over Miami on the road on Saturday should move them into the high 50’s you would think. Huge game for Pitt on Saturday. If you can win this game at Miami with Wake and Notre Dame up next at home next week you have a pretty good shot of getting to 6-5 in the ACC come the first week of February and at that point you would be very close to being back into the NCCA Tournament conversation once again.

A win over Miami gets them a second road Q1 and win at home with wake is another q2. That would put them at 4-5 Q1/2 with 2 quad 3 losses, but no Q4. They would also be 5-1 on the road if they beat Miami, which is important as well. I don’t care if Miami is also injured. A win is a win.

Next 2 are huge because you gotta figure we beat ND at home. It would give us a total of 2 Q1s and Q2 win vs Wake, NET in 50s. Probably puts us at that Next 4 Out range.

Saturday is also a huge game for Miami. It's almost an elimination level game for both teams.

Right. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but if Pitt wins the next 3 you at least have dreams of the tournament. Could they get in at like 12-8? No bad losses? Maybe a couple Q1 wins? I dunno…they’d be on the bubble. You really need them to beat Miami and somehow sweep Wake. If they do that, go 4-3 in the other 7. Maybe win 2 in the ACCT? I dunno - possible.

Just nothing OOC to rely on. But the Duke win will stand out end of season versus other bubble teams, as might their road record.

Well, Syracuse dropped 14 and into Q3 so with Mizzou, we now have 2 Q3 losses. That's not good. Cant lose home games like that. We'd need Syracuse to get back into the Top 75 but I think they stink so I dont see that happening.

We have to hope for 12-8, 4 Q1 wins, a good NET and a weak bubble. Then go to the ACCT and win 2 games. If we can get to 12-8, we can dream.

I’m holding out even a little bit of hope that WVU continues their slow and steady climb to NET respectability by playing good competition twice a week. If they can sneak into Q2 status, it won’t do much but it’ll be something.

As obvious as it sounds, at this point they have to just focus on stockpiling wins and climb the conference to try to end in a top 5 position somehow.

They got their sexy road win to pad their resume, something that was lacking before. Figuring out what will end up being a q1 or q2 or even q3 at this point is a wasted exercise as ACC opponents result in very little movement from here on out- quantity of Ws and no home losses, will be all we have.

Remember we made the tourney with a NET of 67 last year despite more Q1 wins than any other team in the country besides a couple, and we’re what, 69 now?

10-2 is most likely if they are truly a tourney team. If they have turned the corner, they should beat an injured Miami, wake at home, and ND. Nc State and Virginia are road tough, but we aren’t facing Bacot or KF either. Win both of those and Ville, gives you a pass to lose at Wake. Regroup and take down tech. We never beat @Clemson, and then beat @BC, FSU, and Ncstate. That puts them at 22-9 (13-7) heading into conference tourney with
3-5 (Q1, all wins on road), 5-2 Q2, 6-2 Q3, and 8-0 Q4. That gets them in, as their road rec would be 8-3 in that scenario. Either way, NIT should be feasible.

They need Jesse Edwards back bad. I cant believe they've won games without him. They just lost at UCF.

Pitt only jumps two spots after their win at NC State last night from 63 to 61 in the NET. A win at Virginia next Tuesday who is currently 34 in the NET Rankings should jump Pitt you would think close to 10 spots in the NET and put them around 50-53 and at that point they should be in a lot of bracketologists first four or next four out. So needless to say the game at Virginia next week is beyond huge for Pitt’s NCCA Tournament chances.

It's too bad they beat a pretty good team on the road by 3, as opposed to beating an absolutely putrid team that has all but quit on the season by 23.

Pitt’s NET moves up 2 more spots today without even playing from 61 to 59 so can’t say enough about how critical this Virginia game is on Tuesday. Virginia won again last night by 4 against Florida State and have not lost in a month now so they are long overdue for a sub par game or just a loss in general I feel.

Keep in mind as well this is a Virginia team that lost at Notre Dame by 22, at NC State by 16, and at Wake Forest by 19 this season and those are the last 3 teams Pitt has beaten. So while they are playing well this is a Virginia team that can be beaten if Pitt plays like it has the last month or so. A win here as well should move Pitt’s NET to right around 50 maybe even high 40’s and will definitely start putting them in some bracketologists consideration or next four out categories.

Never been to VA's arena but they play so much better at home that it makes me wonder if their arena is somehow different than most and it gives them such an advantage. Anyone know?

Those Virginia losses are meaningless now in assessing Pitt's chances to beat Virginia now. Virginia is far far better than they were back then when they hadn't jelled as a team.

Virginia isnt losing many more games. They have a low talent level but they are now Virginia'ing. They are going to go 16-4 and may win the ACC. I think its possible that we can beat them but highly unlikely

I wouldn’t say they are meaningless they all happened in the last 4-6 weeks and were legit losses you can’t just dismiss the fact they got blown out in all of those games. So yes they are playing better right now but this isn’t a bunch of world beaters either Pitt is playing on Tuesday night. They do play much better at home for sure and I would feel better if this game was at the Pete but Virginia I feel is also due for a slip up or a bad game here since they haven’t lost in a month and playing a hot Pitt team if Pitt is clicking like they have been the last 4 weeks I think has a decent chance of being that game.

Crowd is really close to the floor. Loud and involved. Hoos seem to play with more energy there. It's a really fun environment. By far my favorite college arena to watch a game.

I plan on going Tuesday night. Should be fun

Who are you rooting for?

UVA. My kids are hardcore Virginia fans & I'm not a die-hard for one team in hoops. (although I do really like UVA). I've really come to appreciate Bennett ball.

I draw the line for football though. We went to the UVA/Pitt football games in 21 & 22, and I openly rooted for Pitt while the kids stayed loyal to UVA. ...He had a blast rooting for Pitt at the ACC Championship though, the night after a UVA/Pitt hoops game at JPJ.

What do you mean "low talent level"?

UVA recruits well. Bennett has several former players in the league. They may not recruit like the blue bloods, but they usually have good players.

Virginia blows. One of the lowest talent levels in the ACC. Will go 16-4 though due to supreme coaching
