Neutral Site game

Notre Dame is the second most popular team in a lot of parts of the country but it's hard to call them a PSU rival when the two teams have only played 19 times going back to World War I.

That is your 20th most common opponent. 20th!
Growing up and living in my area Notre Dame had a presence, Pitt had none. and at that time most of the games were played. In the eastern part of the state Pitt is a non issue, people just don't care.

All that means is you & your neighbors couldn't get into Pitt. So you learned how to clean hotel rooms and breed cows.

That's fine, Notre Dame fandom has a presence in New Jersey too, but it doesn't mean Rutgers and Notre Dame are particularly rivals.

It’s what I grew up with and many people here did. Also the current run from the 80s might slightly favor PSU but it’s about even overall.
Now if you’re polling fans around here who you’d like to see for out of conference , ND would come close to topping the list . The game in 07 was one of the toughest tickets ever at psu. I bought a ticket for a friend earlier then saw no other tickets available,

Oh I agree. My only point is that is true of most fan bases across the country. The identification of Notre Dame with Catholicism and football history generally makes them one of the most exciting potential games for any team. But it doesn't make them your rival or mean they'll actually schedule you.

Here's the series history with ND. No matter what excuse anyone from PSU gives any opponent will come down to the financial bottom line and how they can enhance revenue. I myself got tired of the hassle over parking and such so I just watch from home these days. I get to enjoy the game and can still get stuff done.
Others want the experience of game day and that's fine, I just don't like spending the money and taking the whole day up traveling, tailgating, watching, traveling.

True, but Pa. has the highest amount of ND fans according to Blue Gold Illustrated outside of Indiana I believe. I'm not saying them and PSU will get back on each other's schedule, just that if we could pick an OOC foe for our schedule as fans, it would be them.
Of course I think ND should have joined the Big 10 but I believe they avoided doing so to retain their "specialness".
Again, it's money, bottom line.

Why would Pitt or Penn State want the game on neutral sites?

Neutral sites are for teams who have very little history together, and want to make a big splash in a recruiting area. Kind of a one and done arrangement.

*Full disclosure, I read none of this thread, because it's a stupid idea. Sorry if anyone has already pointed it out.

Correct 105-95. Some of which is to the visitors. I stated the 95k in the original post you quoted. What part is confusing you?

You don’t sell out with season tickets. That’s a myth. No confusion at all. This season you’ll sell out vs Pitt and Michigan. That’s it. Are you counting students as part of this 95 you claim?

Tougher ticket than Akron?

That neutral site comment by Franklin just shows how utterly stupid he is. Where does he propose this neutral site game will be? Philly? That's a home game for PSU. If it's to be a true neutral site game, it would have to be played in Manhattan......Kansas. Or Minneapolis, MN. That's not going to happen. How dumb can one person be?

I used to be in the camp of wanting this rivalry to continue. Now, I'd rather we throw them to the gutter where they belong. I don't want Pitt playing a school that had its coaches raping young boys and looked the other way. I've watched this Pitt-PSU rivalry since the 60's. It's nothing like it was and it needs to go away.

Is part of the reason why PSU doesn't play Pitt "on Joe"? Sure. You won't find me denying that.

But "it's all on Joe" is nonsense. It's typical of this board and fanbase, but nonsense none-the-less. After being rejected by Pitt and the other Eastern schools for his All-Eastern League (with terms and conditions favorable to PSU at everyone else's expense), PSU applied for acceptance into the Big East... which Pitt's leadership spearheaded the charge to keep PSU out of. That's squarely on Pitt.

Um, revisionist history? The other schools in big east didn't want State Penn, not Pitt. Joe wanted to keep all his football revenue but share everybody else's basketball revenue. What a deal!!

Watching College Game Day now about the Iowa-Iowa St rivalry. Iowa can figure out how to play their in state rival every year. So can PSU.

They wanted PSU to share football revenue without sharing basketball, speaking of revisionism.

Pitt wasn't even in the Big East when Penn State was REJECTED for membership.

But, in typical Joe Paterno, and his cult followers fashion, big brother Pitt is the cause of the REJECTION.

Priceless!
