OK, I will say it. Saquon Barkley is the most overrated player

I seem to remember with him at PSU is he would bust the big runs/returns and make the splashy play but also get tackled for a lot of 1 and 2 yard gains. There were several games his last year where he didn't break 100 yards. It seems like this year he is finally putting it all together.

I also remember how strange it was so many posters here were fawning over Barkley that year. PSU envy at its finest.
They never had a decent O-line the entire time he was there. He did it all on his own.

I'd kill to have him on the Steelers.

Oh he has tremendous talent...but he was injured quite a bit early on or am I wrong on that? I also thought his last year at psu he had a reputation for making business decisions and running for the sidelines but I could be 100% wrong on that as well. I don't care enough to actually look up his injury history.
Still does. Has cost the Eagles two games by running OB a yard short already this year. He ran OB 2 yards short of any contact on Sunday night. If it keeps him healthy, I guess we'll take it. I don't think he's ever been a winning player that does the little headsy things, but we shall see. I'm an Eagles fan, but these 7 wins have been against mediocre teams. Let's see how they do against the Steelers and the Ravens coming up. The Eagles losing Brandon Graham for the season is a killer. Team leader having a resurgent year. Huff is also on the IR so they are down to two pass rushers. I think the D will struggle a bit.

I haven't followed all of the Eagles games but they've only lost 2 games and one was by 3 scores so I'm not sure SB was responsible for that.

Saquon's lack of collegiate individual and team success at the highest level, I'd prefer this be an indictment of Franklin but probably have to give him a pass like Capel taking over the dumpster opposed to the PedoSU (far too limited) sanctions

someone mentions talented but stuck on a bad team, makes you really appreciate Sanders and unfortunately Simpson and maybe Walter Payton's early years

and I realize(hope) that nobody is thinking he's anywhere near the special of the above 3

So you would be happy if the Eagles traded him to the Steelers for a 5th?

Yeah, I"ll take that deal.

No biggie. Just a weird “grave digging” move by @HailtoPitt to bump this one. Lol. Way to go H2P!!

Who was it that first came up with that “grave digger” line? That was awesome. Might have been @Ski11585? I forget what prompted it but it was funny.
I can’t take credit for coining it. I saw it used on message boards way back in the early 2000s. It’s definitely a great term though.

I'll own this. I was dead ass wrong here. LOL
What’s funny is Jalen Hurts can get hurt, and Kenny could come in, do a reverse spin move away from pressure, and weakly throw a sideline pass that results in a pick 6 to lose the game and I’ll have to own any defense I made of Kenny that the eagles can win a title with a QB like him.

He's is the poster child here for Nitter envy. Probably was hoping for Bradley to be coach back in the day.

I still think that he’s overrated, but I guess that’s because people treated him in college like he was Barry Sanders. And I don’t believe he’s ever ran like Barry Sanders and he’s never been the guy who on his own carries a team. So I have called him overrated in the past and that’s based on the fact that other people have told me he’s the best running back to come out of college since Fred Taylor or Barry Sanders and I said he is no Barry Sanders. He’s a very good back, but he’s no Barry Sanders still. And just because he ran for 2000 yards in an an error where teams don’t tackle and practice and there’s a 17 game season doesn’t mean that he’s on Barry Sanders. Great back, but still not the greatest thing since sliced bread like everybody said he was.

He’s definitely not Barry Sanders, but I was kicking this around earlier - AP will get into the HOF as a first ballot guy in a couple years when he’s up. Derrick Henry the same when he eventually retires and his waiting period is up. I think Barkley is the only other RB that has a chance that is currently playing or recently has played (within the last 5ish years) to get in.

Lol. Saying he's not as good as someone who many consider to be the greatest RB of all time kind of says it all.

He is a great RB.

He not in my top tier of backs though…….tier 1 for me is….
Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, Fred Taylor, Ladanian Tomlinson, O.J Simpson, Jim Brown,Adrian Peterson,Tony Dorsett ,archetypes who are guys who can carry teams year after year after year. Those are the natural running backs who just no matter where they play they are going to be great. This isn’t just based off of production but guys who the offense was built around them for 5+ years. There other names i missed but you get the point. Everybody told me he was going to be in this tier of backs and i just don’t see it. There have been guys who ran for 2000 yards but it was a system thing and a “in their prime kinda thing” ( Chris Johnson, Jamal Lewis,Derrick Henry) I kind of see him has a Terrell Davis type of 2000 yard rusher or a Jamal Lewis type where the system of the team relies on him. But……if he keeps up what he is doing for the Eagles albeit not on a 2000 yard pace but like a nice 3 to 4 year span I’ll say i was wrong. He’s a great back but i feel like he was crowned before he did it at ANY level that’s all.

I would think Barkley is looking like he belongs on this list.

That's ... ugh.

I don't think Barkley is overrated. BUT I will say that defenses today are built to stop the pass, or at least try to stop the passing game as much as possible. Linebackers are smaller, linebackers play pass first, nickel packages used more, etc. A team that runs an old school run heavy offense has an advantage that you couldn't have in say the Barry Sanders era. Teams like the Eagles and Ravens figured this out this year to have successful seasons.

Don't tell Narduzzi I said this because he might want a new OC that sets Pitt back to the stone age.

I mean, the guy had 1,000 yards all three years, scored scored 20+ tds his last two season averaged 5.7 yards a carry during his college career. Which, actually watching him play in those games led me to note in this thread that if he didn't get hurt he'd be one of the best backs in the league for a long time.

This stuff about him not being Barry Sanders, we'll yeah no one yet has been Barry Sanders.

But Barkley is a better Bo Jackson.

Hard to say how good Barkley is historically until his career is over. But there’s little doubt he’s the best back in the league Today and it isn’t close. So from that perspective saying he’s over rated is silly

Also diminishing his talent by saying he’s no Barry sanders is disingenuous. There’s only one Barry sanders.

Like I said ranking him all time is premature but for sure he may end up in the discussions of who the best all time backs are. Time will tell

I don't think that Linebackers are smaller now. I hear that every once in a while and it's sounds like bullshit. It sounds like one of those things people will say because they are faster now and have more duties.

I'll grab a random year from the middle of Sanders career (1995) and compare the average height and weight of the linebackers from Sanders' divisional opponents versus this season. Taking starters off depth charts.

Not a huge difference there, some larger some smaller. Maybe there is a league-wide trend, but I'd imagine we're talking like 0.5% lighter than they were 30 years ago. I'd say that's probably offset by significant increases in strength, speed, and conditioning.

I agree with your statements about Nickel packages though.

Aw man, why’d you have to bring up Hardy Nickerson’s name? Now I have to think about what those 90s Blitzburgh teams would’ve been like had he not left for Tampa Bay…

Okay so maybe it's the case that LBs are the same size. But everything is relative. Are offensive lineman larger today? Are receivers larger? RBs may have actually gotten smaller or the stayed the same over that period, but I would not be shocked if most other positions grew but LBs did not.

I'm jaded by being a kid and growing up watching the Steelers. There are zero linebackers in the NFL today with the build of Levon Kirkland, so I tend to think LBs were heavier back then. He was listed at 270 lbs but wouldn't be surprised if he topped 300.
