Additional Shooting Splits

Pitt shooting the ball within 5 feet of the basket- 69% for the season (Attack the basket more with dribble penetration, Ive been saying it all season)

Pitt is shooting 33% from the midrange (Im going to break this one down a bit)

The 3 that stick out the most from midrange are:

Carrington is 53% from midrange and has the green light all day long

Lowe is 20% from midrange

Hinson is 15% from midrange

ORTG offensive Power Rating

Pitt has 6 players with an ORTG over 120 which is great
Pitt has 2 players with an ORTG at 109 (This is a really nice jump for Jeffress if he can hold it over 100+ this year)
Pitt has 1 player with an ORTG of 85, Jaland Lowe

DRTG Defensive Power Rating- Lower number is better

Guillermo- 81

Torvik- -5.7
Haslam- -8
Warren Nolan - -6
Massey - -5

Random Stats that are interesting / impressive to me

Zach Austin only has 2 turnovers in 6 games this year which is awesome

Ish Leggett leads the team in rebounds per game with 8 boards per game which is awesome and worrisome with regard to our bigs (Hinson primarily who refuses to rebound)

Jorge Diaz Graham has the highest true shooting percentage on the roster currently and he only took 4 shots the last 2 games, making 2 of them. Why is this?

Carlton Carrington has 1 steal this year (And this is a huge surprise with all his height and length because he created a good number of turnovers and steals in the EYBL)

With all these stats, what sticks out and what is surprising to you the first 6 games of the season?

It's surprising that we have won with such poor defensive stats and limited steals. In the ACC, defense will have to improve dramatically as well as forced turnovers. That could be the difference between being a bubble team and a higher seed in a favored location.

We know we have some scorers and some athletes. But Bub, Hinson, the twins, Lowe must step up defensively.

The only bad defensive stats are steals and turnovers forced; points allowed and opponent field goal percentage are very good.

Just to throw one more out, we rank 12th in the country with 30.5 3PA per game. If we’re gonna shoot over 30 3s per game, we got to make them a bit more consistently than 134th in the country.

And I think Austin only has a couple turnovers, but we collectively turn it over a ton trying to force it to him on cuts and lobs to the basket… at least a couple times a game it’s happened.

Other than that, I think most of what you said is in line with what we’ve watched. Time will tell where we’re under/over performing at the moment. For example our rebounding will definitely take a huge hit soon, but we’ll make more free throws.

FT shooting will get better, it was much better yesterday already and Fede’s stroke looked good again.

None of it is terribly troubling. We didn’t turn people over that much last year, that is just not the kind of defense we generally play. Now, I think we have the athletes and length to do more than we have, but it is usually something we don’t try to force.

So 3 point shooting broken down further.
The team as a whole is 63/184=.342
Jeffress, Hueitt, and Marshall are a combined 2/11 from 3. So 61/173=.352 without those 3. Lowe is 3/14. Without him as well they are 58/159=.364. So for the players we actually want to take threes they are about 36.5% and that is with Austin’s early struggles. Lowe should also hopefully improve (was 40 percent in high school) and only 21 percent now.

"Ish Leggett leads the team in rebounds per game with 8 boards per game which is awesome and worrisome with regard to our bigs (Hinson primarily who refuses to rebound)"

IMHO, no reason to be concerned about this at the moment. Pitt's scheme is for the bigs to box out and the guards (like Ish) to get most of the defensive rebounds. This is by design so that the bigs can get out and run the floor. Given their lack of bulk, floor/rim-running is a more effective way to use them.

They also want Hinson to get down court for an early open 3 or a drive to the hoop. If we were running a slower paced style of offense (a deliberate half-court offense) Hinson's and the bigs rebounding would be a concern; and, it may become a problem if opponents are able to impose a slower paced style on Pitt.

The only bad defensive stats are steals and turnovers forced; points allowed and opponent field goal percentage are very good.

Oddly enough, we are good at the two that matter much more and not as good at the two that matter a lot less.

You forgot one. Where does 5-1 rank nationally? That would be a 83.333333 winning percentage. I know. It’s very early in the season. Which could be said about this whole conglomeration.

Leggett on the boards and Hinson in the mid-range are the two biggest surprises to me. What was Hinson’s number last year?
