No way that's sustainable but this is probably the best shooting team in the H-D era.

Artis is shooting 47%, Robinson 42%. Smith is shooting 61% which is just sick. We need to get that kid more PT and more shots. Some of us have been lobbying for a "designated shooter" forever on this board. Well, we have him now. Lets use him!

We are also the best FT shooting team in the ACC. That might be sustainable. Our team has generally been ok, but had a few boat anchors like Cam Wright, Nasir, McGhee. We only have a few guys under 70% right now, and I can see them keeping that up. Mike, Jamel, James, Smith, Johnson are all good FT shooters. Maia and Luther not atrocious for big men.

We've had a lot of discussions on this board about how much to make of free throw percentage. I don't want to turn this into a foul shooting debate thread but I'm of the opinion that a bad FT percentage isn't necessarily a bad thing because it could mean your big guys (who are normally worse foul shooters than guards) are drawing a lot of fouls because of their strong inside offensive game. Guys like Gray and Blair are examples of this. They were great college players but killed our team FT% because they drew and missed so many foul shots. Obviously, any team would love to have guys like that though.

On this year's team, our 5's are not going to shoot many foul shots, simply because they're not really part of the offensive system and aren't going to get a ton of offensive rebounds. And Young is more of a finesse C/PF which means he's a good shooter but not really a rugged rebounder (though he is a good defensive rebounder).

It would be great to have a bunch of big bruisers underneath who can also shoot FT's but it usually doesn't work that way. Your FT% is usually indicative of who it is that's shooting them and if your big guys aren't drawing a lot of fouls (that may drop your percentage), that's probably not a good thing.

I said before the season I was hoping that Smith would be another Ronald Ramon, and I think I may have sold him short. His rebounding is outstanding.

Still, I really like where he's at right now. Similar to Ramon, he's a really low usage player who is more or less a designated sniper that just takes what comes to him. I don't think I'd want him to try to do more than he is now. Right now he's outstanding and seems to be extremely comfortable.

I think he just may have a better shot than Ramon. And with all the stuff he does defensively and the dirty work he does, the comparison when Zeise was saying these things reminded me of someone else too.. Jaron Brown. Needless to say a guy who is basically a combination of the two is a great basketball player in my book.
