I’m not saying Narduzzi’s full quote wasn’t bad, nor am I removing any blame from him for today. I also have enjoyed Hiles’ coverage on the team and the podcast he does on The North Shore Drive. With that being said…

This is the second time this season where Hiles’ inaccurate reporting has placed Pitt in a negative spotlight nationwide. When you’re reporting a quote as controversial as that- where you know what the ramifications will be for the program and its players- he needs to make sure it’s exactly as he said it. “We didn’t do a good job (replacing good players)” and “We thought we replaced them… I didn’t do a good enough job coaching today” are two completely different messages.

If what Hammett tweeted out is the correct quote, then shame on Noah Hiles for not doing his due diligence before pressing “send.”

It doesn't matter. I'm glad we have Noah and I pay for my Post-Gazette subscription to read the Pitt coverage. Put the blame where it belongs. You're criticizing the wrong people.

I don’t disagree. Like I said in my OP, I think he’s done a good job covering the team, and I am placing the blame for today’s loss on Narduzzi.

I also think Hiles could’ve done a better job reporting on this. IMO, they are mutually exclusive and each of the above statements can be correct.

Here is the full quote. I am literally going to type out as I listen to it.

As a football coach, you know, you lose a lot of good players a year ago. You think as a coach, ya know, you're going to replace them. We obviously havent and uh, ya know, it starts with me. I didn't do a good enough job coaching today.

What he said is fine

Hiles knew exactly what he was doing putting the quote out there the way he did. He couldn't retweet the player's reactions fast enough. Only after the entire team and national reporters caught wind of the quote did he put the entire quote out there. This is from a beat reporter.
Yeah he seems to enjoy the attention. Garbage move.

He's a typical PG hack.

Here’s the thing though: if the players are retweeting the quote they already are getting this vibe from the head coach and his coaching staff.

What he said is absolutely true.

And absolutely moronic for a head coach to say.

The full quote is still horrible. The partial quote is "These players suck" vs the full quote "These players suck. And thats my bad." Narduzzi has been talking to the media for way too long to still be this bad at it.

The guy who tongues the butt of the crap Pgh media will not be happy with your criticism.

He’s not to be confused with the other guy who tongues the butts of the crap referees. Or the one who tongues the butt of the crap Pitt chancellors.

That noted, in this case, we can’t b1tch. We have horrible players, we have horrible coaches, we have horrible school leadership, so we richly deserve to be abused by the ass-rapist-Nit-loving Pgh media.

What about the guy who tongues his own butt to make it easier to stick his head up there?

Yeah I don’t see the rest of the quote tempering the shade he threw at his players in any way. Idiotic. Hiles should have printed the entire thing which wouldn’t change the effect—it still would have caused the same blowback by Hammond and the others. The issue isn’t whether what he said is true, it’s that a head coach/mentor doesn’t say that about his kids.

Just about every time someone puts a mic in front of Dooz these days, he makes a bigger and bigger fool of himself.

It all starts with PN as he is the HC. He’s the one who hired the OC, allowed Phil to start, etc, etc, etc. As you said no removing blame from PN.

With that being said…Hiles knew what he was doing and it was a b!tch move. If a Steelers beat reporter did that they would be done and we all know it’s true. What PN said wasn’t good/smart but at least be a professional and put the whole quote where he takes blame as well. But the damage is done as Hiles had about 1.5 mill views of his original tweet and less than 100 k views where he “corrected his mistake”, yeah mistake he did on purpose lol.

Link is not working so I’ll copy and paste the tweet of what real Pitt man George Aston tweeted:

You would think a "Pitt athletics reporter" would at least not go out of their way to make any part of the program look bad in any capacity. You are a reporter for a big time paper. You know exactly what you're doing by putting out that partial quote.

Disappointing.

A head coach has to be an utter moron to say what Narduzzi said. The idea that what he said was true so it's OK to insult his players like that, and then expect those guys to play for him the rest of the season, is almost as dumb as what he said in the first place.

And at least he had the excuse that he was talking off the cuff. The idiots who hear the full quote now and have a minute to think about it and still think it was an OK thing to say are even dumber than Narduzzi.

You would think that someone who lived in an actual city, as opposed to a college town, for as many years as he did would understand that "going out of their way to not make the local team look bad" isn't actually what a reporter is supposed to do.

Edited to say that this isn't what 4upmc is saying, it's what George Aston is saying. Quoting only Aston's part of the post might lead one to think that it was 4upmc saying that, not George, and if anyone thinks that it was not my intention.

Over a two week span Hiles put Pitt on the national radar for a flat out wrong story on the blue vase and again for Narduzzi's quote. Think whatever you want about Narduzzi's quote, but he put it out there the way he did for engagement purposes. Mission accomplished.

Bingo. I don’t see ppl making excuses for the poor job PN has done this year. And yes he should be more media savvy. But Hiles is supposed to be a “professional” journalist. He’s anything but professional. A professional wouldn’t give partial quotes or totally get stories wrong like the blue vase.

He works for the PG. Who cares? What's he making? 50K? Don't tank the program and then you dont have to worry about beat reporters.

Well, all of this just amplifies that we have some charmin soft players on this team. Idiot coaches aside, it shows.

Duzzi can’t help but put his foot in his mouth. First it was boo city, then defending the QB, then saying it’s not his decision, now this .. he’s been a moron in front of the mic since he’s been here .. but stuff gets bad when you don’t win games to cover it up. Losing by 50 and then saying the players aren’t good enough. Who cares about what he said after it .. it doesn’t matter

when you throw people under the bus .. this stuff tends to happen. Noah had good info weeks ago and Duzzi made a fool out of him. Don’t make enemies .. Noah simply quoted pat. You guys are acting like it’s fabricated. His first words out of his mouth were his players aren’t good enough. It’s his fault

I still think Boo City shirts in Pitt colors and script would kill it.

I think Narduzzi was admitting "he" did not do a good enough job restocking players through "the portal"

i thought that the case before the season and it is clear now.

we need a portal specialist and....the portal needs viewed as more than bringing lost recruits home

Are you, gasp, suggesting that the university treat its professional football team like it indeed IS a professional football team, and operate it, well, professionally?

I don’t think Noah owes an apology at all. That’s a press conference where you come out and just say we got an old fashioned @$$ whooping. But nope, Pat didn’t say names but he called out performers who made mistakes costing touchdowns as if any one of those not happening would have won the game.

Noah’s players quote wasn’t exact but truly there was no real difference with what Narduzzi said. Prior to the game I told a buddy that this has been a weird year for Duzz with the media and on field decisions. Boo city. Denying Jurk was practicing at tight end. Asking reporter if she counted missed tackles. Deferring to Cignetti for QB1 pick.

Halloween 2023 will probably be noted as the beginning of the end for Narduzzi.

How is the fuller quote remotely better
He blames the players the entire quote
