UNLV QB

Looks like we have what may be the first NIL holdout? UNLV’s QB sitting out due to unfulfilled promises.

I love this. Remember, these arent pay for play deals, right? Whoever agreed to pay this QB to do a commercial or appear on a billboard to help their business should have little relation to how many games or how well this player played. The deal is supposed to be: "We think you are a recognizable name in the Las Vegas community, we want to pay you $20,000 to do a commercial for our casino." Not, "if you transfer here from Holy Cross, we will pay you $200,000." No idea what was promised to him. Just threw that number out.

I always say either make them employees and pay them real salaries or enforce these pay for play NIL deals and make everyone ineligible because pay for play is still against the rules

Who? Who is going to do this? The NCAA can't because their 2,700 lawyers are too busy fighting the dozen lawsuits regarding NIL to handle the absolute deluge of lawsuits that this would result in.

You think schools or conferences are going to police themselves knowing that the other conferences will pounce on their weakness? The second they do they would also get slapped with a lawsuit.

The only way college football survives is if the NCAA allows schools to allow students as employees, then one-by-one each school adopts that stance. But at that point I can't imagine the B1G and SEC not just breaking away because what good is the NCAA to them at that point? The only way I can imagine college football surviving as college football is with Congress stepping in to give a collective bargaining without full employee rights type of situation.

I can’t imagine SMFs coach crush Marion was involved in any empty promises, right?

A few sources saying that kid's agent was approached with a $300k offer to transfer and UNLV wouldn't match it. Not sure how legit it is since he only has a season left after this and takes a major integrity hit (unless he can frame himself as the victim of unpaid promises).

And another from a 247Sports analyst.
Reading between the lines, this is what I was thinking. He outplayed his contract by a couple of wins and them being ranked. Now he wants to get paid. I’d think most coaches would take pause at a kid who quit mid year as soon as he had an offer… but let’s be real, someone will take him and ESPN will lap up the redemption story spun by some SID.

He sounds like a perfect Colorado buff recruit

No one is going to back off this kid because he quit the team for more money. He will get what his market value is in the portal. His issue is that he is a running QB and not really a passer so he will only be attractive to certain teams. I love what this kid is doing. More kids need to do this. College football does not enforce pay for play NIL deals so I want to see more of this stuff happen. And since they are not employees and have no contracts, they are free agents every year. I want to see more kids who are overperforming hold-out for more money. I want it to be more of a farce that it already is.

This just gets more interesting. His brother tweeted about it, then deleted his entire twitter account probably after realizing that now a national media would start going through his old tweets. Probably a smart move on his part.

Now the agent is reaching out to media-types. Wonder where this is all going to land.

Can’t disagree. Only ones that will avoid him will be the ones who are set at QB.

Word is he was paid what was due, but was shopping his services for another payday. Those are reports on local sports talk. Take it fwiw.

Accord is to local beat reporter. UNLV has never had back to back winning seasons.

If he succeeds, college football may as well not exist anymore. Everyone is going to be quitting any time some other team calls them up and offers a bag.

Hmmm.... who is the OC and QB coach? 🤔

Sluka was verbally promised a minimum of $100,000 from a UNLV assistant coach for transferring there. None of that money was paid, per Cormartie.

BTW, there's a lot of info in those other Thamel tweets as part of that thread.

In all seriousness, you wonder what the real story is. Is the kid lying and wants more money? Is UNLV trying to do damage control? This would kill their future NIL prospects.

What a mess.

As they should. The difference here is that Sluka has a RS year. A kid like Holstein does not so if some school calls him up and offers him $2 million, there's no reason for
him to quit until after the season. Now, he could hold-out because he wants Pitt to match LSU's offer right now but I dont think you'll see that happen that much. This is more of a unique case of a kid having a RS year left and wanting to cash in.

I liked what Mike Gundy said in a presser. He said he tells his players that once fall camp begins and during the season, dont come to him or have their agents come to him for more money. Its done. The deals are done. They address those in the off-season.

The idea that a dude that was an average QB transfer, and has played average to below average, has big time offers that he wants to accept and get out of his UNLV commitment, is not believable.

He was a 3* rated college player. His value hasn’t really gone up from there.

There's a lot of claims in the Thamel tweets. Both sides have their mouthpieces spreading their side, but now that it's claimed that it was all "verbal" then neither side will be able to prove what was said. If the kid's family is lying it should be pretty easy to show the claim he was only paid $3,000 for moving expenses is bullshit.

-NIL is formalized now, Nevada even has laws protecting it, you can sign contracts. What agent and family transfers on the word of verbal guarantee for the final year of eligibility?

-The kid had other suitors, but UNLV was apparently the only school that agreed to let him finish out the semester and get his degree before arriving on campus. But they are going to stiff him more than 97% of some promised offer and shoot themselves hard in the foot for all future recruits?

-This wouldn't be the first kid that has lied about NIL money not being paid before transferring in the past year. There was that OL from Oklahoma that negotiated a raise from their collective then transferred the next morning. Then the RB from Oregon State (now Miami) that said their NIL lied about paying him but somehow had two new cars and a house. Then after his first quarterly check for $92k was released publicly, he said that they didn't "give him the car and house but he earned it" or some shit like that.

Apparently his brother is talking to Bud Elliot on the record about what has happened.

Elliot is going live with it on the Cover 3 podcast. I didn’t get a chance to tune into it live.

You don't think this could lead to other issues? Say Pitt goes on a run in the ACC. Maybe Clemson Ford comes in and says we'll give you $1 million to come here next year, but you have to leave the team immediately. Clearly nobody has any real authority to stop that.

I have no inside info, but from reading some stuff, it's possible both of these are true:

1) The QB was 'officially' promised a certain NIL number by the collective/boosters/head coach/etc. All those in the know of where the NIL is being distributed. And the QB was given the $$ as promised so they feel all obligations were met.

2)Without the authority/access to $ to do so, an assistant coach made promises to the QB of additional $$ that were not covered in #1 above and then was not able to produce. From the QBs perspective the assistant coach's promises were broken and he did not get everything he was expecting.

Normally, I'd say this a little convenient for the people in charge to have deniability and blame an assistant for being out of place. However, there is reason to believe in this case that the assistant would make false promises.

I was just about to write the same thing. Something sounds very fishy about that.

lol, his brother said that Sluka passed on multiple big P5 and G5 written offers to sign with UNLV on a verbal offer if he manages to win out the starting job against the other transferring QBs.

I have no inside information but I don't believe there is even a 1% percent chance that's true.

Agreed I saw the kid play against Kansas and was less than impressed. Theres no one out there knocking on his door to throw a ton of cash at him.

But why the heck would this kid retain an agent to pull in $100K?
