Jalen Warley

A Top 50 Nationally rated recruit from rivals updated 2021 rankings that is a potential star Point Guard in the making. He’s a consistent 3 point shot away (getting better) before Deron Williams comparisons become much more popular on a National Level.

Warley has a short list of 6-7 schools (not including Kentucky yet with no offer) but Im comfortable in saying that Pitt is probably the team to beat to get him as of today. We are in prime position here.

Warley has openly stated his interest in going to a strong academic school and having a strong bond with his coach and teammates. He is very good friends with Noah Collier. And he has openly stated he feels a very close family vibe at Pitt with our staff, with Jeff Capel, and with our players. Expect an official visit to Pitt after his season is over at Westtown.

Warley also knows Will Jeffress is very strongly eyeing Pitt and reclassification. Warley is a 6’5-6’6 point guard that has star potential at the college level and has the play making ability to shred defenses. He can easily play together with 5 Star Guard Jalen Hood Schifino and those two could create nightmare type problems for opposing defenses to stop in the future.

Will Jeffress

By now everyone should know Will Jeffress is strongly considering reclassification as I mentioned it long ago. And Jeffress and his family are very close to Jeff Capel. A 4 star borderline 5 Star 3 / 4 tweener forward, Jeff Capel would love to add Jeffress to either class. I am comfortable in saying Pitt is without question the team to beat right now. Jeffress, like Warley, is an honor student that takes his academics very seriously. Jeffress is also well aware of other top recruits with high interest in Pitt and what Pitt can become.

Adama Sanogo

A man amongst boys as the Alpha dog center. Ive been talking about Sanogo for almost a year now long before his wave of offers and his national rankings came to fruition. He is a physical beast that has manhandled teams and players in the paint and is a rebound machine in the paint. As a 6’9 Center, Sanogo has already been elevated to a Top 30 National recruit (borderline 5 Star) by ESPN and will continue to rise.

Jeff Capel offered Sanogo last May, the earliest Power 6 offer that he received. Seton Hall was the 2nd that I know of, a team Sanogo is also very high on and a team Sanogo has visited multiple times to watch home games. Sanogo is starting to mold his school list down but expect the blue bloods to start trying to get in late with him. Capel is recruiting him and has been at a lot of his practices and open gyms and our entire staff is recruiting him. Pitt will make his final school cut and a visit will happen. Sanogo is a 2020 reclassification candidate and would start immediately.

Top 5’s

Nnanna Njoku

Nnanna Njoku has a short list of 5, a 6’10 Top 150 National Center. Wichita State, Marquette, Miami, Villanova and Pitt. Villanova is the leader and the team to beat. He is close to Pitt coach Tim O’toole but is not our first choice at Center. Has good potential but I want to see better and more consistent rebounding.

Ike Cornish has 5 upcoming potential visits in mind

Xavier and DePaul have offered with visits in the works to the two Big East programs and Pitt, Virginia Tech and VCU are also schools Cornish would like to visit among others. He wants a Pitt offer. Cornish is now being mentioned in multiple National Top 150’s as a borderline 4 Star Guard / wing and as I mentioned earlier, he is rising. A player that has a similar style / build to Lamar Patterson, Cornish is becoming a very good outside shooter and he can pass.

Keon Edwards Top 5

A Top 25 Nationally rated 5 star guard /wing, Edwards mentioned his early Top 5 as Depaul, Florida State, TCU, Maryland, and Pitt. Depaul is the current leader, he has visited twice since early December and they are the significant favorite at this time. He’s a three level scorer that can shoot it from 3 and could elevate our offense quickly. To get into his early Top 5 is a statement by Capel. But this is an uphill battle which is why I have not been talking about him much. He will probably take his other visits before a commit.

Eric Gaines

Fast, athletic, and shifty point guard from Lithonia Georgia that recently put up 34 points at the Tournament of Champions against 4 Star Top 50 rated point guard Deivon Smith in dominant fashion opening many eyes with those in attendance asking who the heck is he.

Gaines was putting up big numbers in the EYBL that were just as good as RJ Davis before the stress fracture he suffered last summer after only 4 games, sidelining him the entire summer and limiting his exposure. Becoming a lights out shooter and with his athletic ability he can become very dangerous at the college level and has huge potential.

Comparisons to Ja Morant have started and a good chance he is going to be ranked in the National Top 50-100 or much higher if people actually watch him. Dayton, Georgia, Houston, Washington State, and many more are recently coming in hard and that list is going to significantly grow heading into the spring as his name is mentioned more often.

Lack of exposure like RJ Davis earlier in his recruitment is the reason he is unranked / unevaluated right now. But his name is starting to rise very fast. He is high on Georgia and has visited Georgia but is open. He would be a major steal this late in the process.

Rudi Williams

Another gifted point guard in his second season in Juco. Williams is still entertaining new offers coming off a major season that has him pushing to be a Juco All American with 19 points per game, 9 assists per game, and is a 40% 3 point shooter which are very good JC stats. No offer from Pitt has been made yet. Williams wants to make his college decision in the next few months. Pitt continues to monitor him.

Mac Etienne- A 6’11 Top 50 National Center from New York, like Sanogo Pitt was one of the very first P6 schools to offer him last summer. A rugged physical player with New York toughness and a craft to collect rebounds, he also carries a chip on his shoulder like Champagnie and Toney when he plays and welcomes contact. Etienne is wide open at this time per his recent interview but has the same list of 8-10 schools recruiting him, most of which are power schools in the Northeast region. Recruiting will expand. He has already unofficially visited Syracuse, St. John’s, Uconn, etc.. in the Northeast. Capel is working on getting him to visit officially after the school year and their is legit interest on both ends between him and Pitt.

Franck Kepnang and Efton Reid- Both are 2021 5 Star Centers that are considering reclassification to 2020. Reid has been to Pitt once already. And Kepnang is well aware of Noah Collier going to Pitt and Warley being very high on Pitt, his Westtown teammates. Reid as mentioned is going to be hard to get out of Virginia. But Pitt remains a significant player for Kepnang and the next step is getting him to visit at seasons end. Kepnang may visit with Warley and Collier. Kentucky is recruiting Kepnang.

Bryce Mcgowens- Becoming a lights out shooter that we could really use as a 2-3 guard and already has mentioned his relationship with multiple Pitt commits and current players. All the family and connections to Pitt are there. I think however it is going to be difficult getting him out of the South in the end. Mcgowens is considered a Top 50 National Guard and Pitt would love to have him.

Jeff Capel is starting to rake in Talent. A top team is starting to take place in the future with 5 Star Guard Jalen Hood-Schifino, rising 4 Star Pf / C John Hugley, and the lights out shooting from Itihiel Horton with depth pieces of Max Amadasun and Noah Collier.

Add in Jeffress, Warley, Sanogo, or another one of these players above, not only is Pitt going to beat many ACC teams with this level of high-end talent, Pitt can become a contender to compete for the National Title. And that doesn’t include Rodney Gallagher in 2023, a 5 Star Guard that Pitt leads for.

In case you missed John Hugley’s range this year as a 42% 3 point shooter, some clips from the other night showing his deep range. He is a far better shooter than you probably think he is as he is starting to make multiple 3’s per game consistently. He is also a far better passer than you may think he is. He will make a very strong push to start immediately. As of today, the goal is to mold Big John into a future 4. We are recruiting more Star Centers to play with him and many of our top targets are Centers for both 2021 and 2020 reclassification.

Jeff Capel On Ithiel Horton (Horton will be without question the best shooter on the team next year and is instant offense)

Very exciting times are coming. And Pitt is getting close to having a very dominant team with high major talent in the near future. Patience is a quality virtue, but with Jeff Capel it is going to happen in time.

Thanks a bunch, Vader.

If a couple more players re-classify to 2020 and commit then George graduating and/or transferring won't free up enough ship space and others will have to transfer.

We just don't have the room.

IF we have 1 or 2 additional guys come in, then it should be pretty easy to figure out who would leave based on position. For example) An elite center like Sanogo

Everybody tries to push Brown out. He is far from our worst problems. He will be a Sr next year. I see a kid like Drumgoole already being recruited over.

Of course, this guy Vader, if you listen to him, every McD All American is favoring Pitt.

That's not at all what he writes. Half of the players he mentions others as the leaders- just like in the above post.

Brown won’t be going anywhere. The guy is never going to be a star, but he has slowly improved over his 3 years and one can expect him to be a solid player as a senior. Plus, who is the last Pitt true big man who could shoot the ball even remotely as well as he does.

Wow! Talk about jumping to conclusions about wanting Brown to be gone. No such wish. Just reacting to the hypothetical about an immediate star center committing along with Jeffress along with Hugley and Amadasun also arriving. If that happened someone besides George would have to leave. Brown, in that scenario only might be a candidate to grad transfer out. So, purely a hypothetical in the event of an unlikely scenario happening.

It's pretty much exclusively the JDIG crowd. Oh, and SMF. That should speak to the company they are in.

I dont want him to leave. I just think the team is severely limited if he has to get significant minutes because he cant rebound, defend, or score. We need a rebounder. He does some good things but its too few and far between. If Pitt wants to make the NCAAT next year, it simply must have an ACC-level starter at the 5. That is just reality.

Brown will be back, and we should want him back. I'm no
great fan of Brown's play, but he has improved. He seems
like a very good team member.I want to see him here next
year. I like the recruits coming in, but we have no idea
how they will perform as freshmen at this level.

How about a reminder to all those off season quotes about
our present freshmen. Hmmmm, let's see; Drumgoole was
going to start with his great outside shooting. Coulibaly?
Even more ridiculous....he was going to see playing time
at the same time with our two bigs. Oh yeah, and remember
these posts...Coulibaly with his soft hands would be at the
high post. He was a good passer and could hit that jumper
from the line. Hilarious.
Of course Champagnie was not forgotten. Many predicted
him to be the worst of our recruits. How did that turn out?
He ends up being one of our better players, and in some
games, our most productive.

This is why I don't predict what recruits are actually going to
do as freshmen. Yes, I like what's coming in next year. We
have no idea how they're going to play. Maturity level, speed
of the game compared to what they're used to, how they adapt
to college life, practice time, travel, game time pressure, etc.
etc. I'm sure you can think of more.

I would very much like to see us be able to play two bigs together fairly often next year providing one of our newcomers can be effective down low. In that scenario Brown could look good offensively a few steps out shooting that nice jumper of his.
Agreed would love two bigs out there at once.

It would be a nice problem to have! Its like we have a few guys that think TB is the answer after 5 position. IMO if we pull in one of The big centers that Vader is talking about the only reason why TB would start is because experience not because he was a better player we all know that he may hit a 15-footer once or twice a game and maybe block one maybe two shots but his strength is weak is explosive jumping is weak is rebounding is atrocious so it wouldn't be hard for one of those guys to beat him out or for JC to move on from him. Let's just take a look at it keep TB and we know what he is or get a top center to start. Do we keep TB and say no to a Top 4 or 5 star because TB means to much to us. REALLY!

Effusive praise for Horton is great news , a guy who can be a force on offense would make everyone better .

Funny but I actually posted long ago that Toney was being recruited over--and that recruit was Drumgoole and or Coulibaly. Btw, anyone see Baylor and their two bigs complimenting each other?

So the question I have is, assuming Jeffress (and it's an assumption at this point that he takes presumably George's scholarship) commits for 2020, do we bring in anyone else, if so how many, and who leaves? I agree that Drumgoole looks lost right now but are we ready to force a guy like that out yet? Brown is a senior next year, so unless we can upgrade significantly next year from the jump, do we need him to go? Just asking the board experts for their perspective...

Well, someone needs to go in addition to George if someone other than Jeffress would be added. If that hypothetical addition is a center considered good enough to be an immediate starter (Sonogo?), then Brown might be a logical choice to leave because he can probably graduate by the end of next summer and become a grad transfer. Under this hypothetical scenario Brown might even want to grad transfer. Another possibility under this scenario could be releasing incoming freshman Amadasun from his LOI. I doubt this would be preferable to Brown leaving however—at least IMHO.

On the other hand, under this same hypothetical situation someone does have to leave and, if not Brown, some lower classman would have to be “encouraged” to transfer. Drumgoole is the guy that seems logical to leave for those suggesting this transfer option because he hasn’t performed as they thought he would for being a 4-star recruit and because Jeffress plays his same position.

It is really too soon to be concerned about any of this stuff’ but it is what fans do!

George is probably gone. If Jeffress commits, Kene probably is too. I would expect at least 1 other player to leave, maybe 2 because that's just college basketball. So I think we bring in 1 more, maybe 2 more in addition to Jeffress.

My point on Drumgoole is yes he is FR and if all was well, likely he would redshirt. Hell, he still may redshirt next year. But if we get Jeffress and Schifino and some others......nothing against him, but his minutes will be scarce. Likely.

Yeah, I am far from a big Brown fan, but agree that he has progressed to the point where, on a team with no other real options, is a serviceable center to get you by.

I am really intrigued by Max, but almost no way he comes in next year ready to be a big minutes guy in the ACC.

It may progress to the point where HCJC can get the quality of big men to use two "bigs" at the sames time, but a lot of folks were getting geeked up to see AKC or Hamilton at the PF spot with Brown at center this year, and well ...

NO way, none, he uses Brown and some other big just to have two big men for anything other than some minutes in certain matchups next year, with presumably X, Trey and Tony, and have Champ, Murphy, Horton on the bench, just to play Brown.

IF Hugs is a baller, you are going to see him use him or Brown with some combination of Champ, Toney, Horton, Murphy, Trey, X when it counts (which wil be 90%+ of ACC play.

Just to be clear about the math here--

Kene is already being counted as gone just so we will have room for the current incoming 3 signed recruits. We have 12 on ship and 3 coming in which gets us to 2 over the 13 limit. Then because Hamilton has used up his eligibility we are then 1 over. Next, Kene Chukwuka is academically a senior so he will graduate (with a year of eligibility left due to injury this season) and that leaves us right at the 13 limit with no open ships left.

So, add Jeffress for 2020 (vs 2021) and someone else needs to leave (George is the fan speculation). Then, if we were to add a second additional recruit to the 2020 class (after Jeffress being added) then an additional current roster player would have to leave to make scholarship room.

Yeah I agree on this assessment. My speculation is that Brown would be the next to go because every other recruit is Capel's on the roster for next year other than Brown and he would have the potential to graduate and transfer either to somewhere closer to home or somewhere he could start. Outside of Brown then it becomes someone Capel recruited leaving. X was the early thought, leaving for the NBA, but since he isn't in the top 100 even anymore for NBA prospects that doesn't seem likely.

No clue what happens if we get 2 2020 reclassification. If we do it is a good problem to have as it would be a significant talent influx.

Why redshirt him at all? He would be taking up a ship in his 5th year that could go to a more talented player. Let him developnaturally and use him accordingly. Ditto for Coulabaly. If the program wasn't coming from such a bad place we would think nothing of not seeing much from a freshman.

The only way TB leaves is if it’s his own idea , despite the message board haters wanting him gone I couldn’t see JC asking him to leave . Despite his limitations would Pitt be a better team without him ? Would you rather have Coulibaly taking his minutes this season ? While we all have great hopes for the newcomers until they start playing college ball it’s hard to tell what they will bring to the table next yr . Most Fr bigs need seasoning . I doubt that JC wants to go into next season with zero experience inside .

If Pitt lands Jeffress that really changes things for Drumgoole , the mysterious thing is that he was good enough in early practice to gain a spot in the starting lineup . He must have showed something , but since his injury he just looks lost and overmatched . Players don’t stay where they’re not in rotation , gone are the days where players work hard and improve so they can play in their 3rd , 4th or 5th yr . My guess is that if anyone leaves it him .

Agree with your reasoning, wbr. And as Capel continues to grow the program here, would expect the caliber and quality of the recruits to improve accordingly. As such, would imagine we'll see less and less RS'ing (barring injury, of course). There could always be the occasional exception, but doubt the plan will allow for tying up scholarships for 5 years in the vast majority of cases.

him to be the worst of our recruits.

And the same applies to these guys coming in. We know very little how they will transition to the college game. None of them may pan out, no matter what their pedigree is. That's what recruiting is all about. You take high risks with the kids you recruit, and try and reduce your risk by recruiting what appear to be high end recruits. But in the final analysis, it's a crap shoot.

If one of the new guys coming in next year even approaches what Champ is doing this year, that would be a successful recruiting class. We know that all of them won't.

I don't want Brown gone, but who goes if Jeffress wants to come to Pitt and reclass into 2020? Who goes if Sanoga wants to reclass into 2020 and come to Pitt? At the end of the day Pitt will still be a bubble team next year for the NCAA with or without Brown and the upside of these other players is hard to ignore especially when the long-term viability of the program is more critical.

Sorry to burst all your bubbles but Brown isn't going anywhere next year and he'll play around 20 minutes a game as a senior. He's just too much of a defensive asset in the post and not playing him would be a huge disservice to this team. The development of his shooting is also an unexpected strength that this team desperately needs in the post. Hugley should play 15-20 minutes next year depending on how ready he'll be to play in the ACC, Amadsun probably won't play much as a freshman, and I have no idea how much Coulibaly will improve. Terrell should be a pretty serviceable center in the ACC next year like it or not.

I count George as being gone more than Kene. Kene contributed some and can take a RS. Speculation is that George will be graduating so its hard to imagine him being here.

Kene is gone. Wouldn't the program have to apply for the RS? If they need the ship, he is gone. I can see AC and GD being recruited over already. XJ, TM, AT, and JC all showed/are showing flashes as freshman. AT clearly has improved (I too posted before he may be recruited over, however, have been happy to eat my words and see his improvement over the course of this year). As such, I think its the other two recruits who came in this year may benefit by transferring down a level. It is about winning now, and when Capel hits on recruits, it is clearly evident. This is without really pulling in any top 100 guys yet on the court. TB can be hit or miss in a game and when on, he is a valuable 5-10 mins and 5 fouls. Next year, they will have additional depth to play with. I'd love for TB to make the tourney after being on that 0-19 team and getting a senior day ovation from the loyal base.

Few would disagree with what you say here given the current roster makeup for next season. The only way it even becomes possible that Brown goes voluntarily or otherwise (and some other player could go instead) is if two possible but unlikely things were to both occur:

(1) Two or more 2020 recruits (reclassified from 2021?) are added this spring.

AND

(2) One of the two is a consensus 5-star top 50 Center recruit.
