All this talk about bars and restaurants is darkly humorous. Texas with all the major programs we have is in crisis and the Houston Medical Center is almost out of ICU beds. Florida is in the same situation along with Arizona.

Right now players from Texas would have to quarantine for 14 days before playing any opponents in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. There are no real containment measures in place and idiots are listening to Trump who's telling people complete nonsense.

Here's a thought: let's try NOT to be #1 in the world in Covid19 infections and deaths. That's a championship we don't want.

We have people who won’t wear a mask because they say it interferes with God’s breathing system and that it will cause more infection. Plenty of elected and public officials all over the country are just as insane as the citizens.

Until there’s a drug to treat it or a vaccine IMO we’re fu**ed.

Cases have now gone up in 30 states. And it’s not because of more testing. So unless we get a handle on this and fairly quickly I don’t see how there will be football in the fall. I wouldn’t bet on the NHL, NBA, or MLB being sustainable for long either. But I hope I’m wrong.

1) Wear a mask when you are in public, especially indoors.

2) Socially distance yourself (6ft. or more).

3) Don’t hold large gatherings.

The leader of our country doesn’t do these 3 simple things, and he is supposed to set the example.

My 22 year old daughter just tested positive. Now I am in lock down and may get it...this is scary and serious still. I am 50 yrs old with average health. But I am still scared for me, my wife and my 3 other children. I love Pitt and college football but not at the expense of anyone's life. I would rather take a year off and eradicate this thing then perpetuate it for more months than necessary.

While coronavirus is obviously concerning and a very real threat to some people (namely, the elderly and immunocompromised), these data also show that the risk for the rest of the population is quite low.

CDC Data Sources (Accessed on 23-June-2020)

The Texas Lieutenant Governor just gave an interview. He stated Texas has 7,200 ICU beds. Of those 7,200, 1,400 are being occupied with covid patients.

Just because all ICU beds are not being used by Covid patients does not make Covid a serious issue for ICU beds. The illness is currently occupying just under 20% of ICU beds in Texas. I'm sure there are some areas in the states that have the number of ICU beds to handle a 20% increase in need, but I doubt every area can handle that and if the percentage increases then more areas will run out of bed space.

Houston’s Texas Medical Center is at 100% ICU bed capacity.

27% of this # are covid patients. That # will surely increase.

The data also is showing that # of patients coming to ICU's in Texas are younger and they require much less stay than older patients.

On a positive note they've been preparing for the surge and state they will be ready if the bed #'s overflow.

I'm not saying it's not serious. It's definitely serious. The reports I've seen state this is different from March/April because of the patients' age. The length of stay is much less.

Well, people smoke, drink, use drugs, text and drive, speed well above speed limits, run red lights, I could go on and on of death causing activities. So, what makes anyone think 100% will wear masks when asked / told to do so?

This is the SEC land prepping for the season. Nature’s vaccine, herd immunity, is in effect.

Dont be such a pessimist. It is only June 25 and lots can change in 60-70 days.
Unfortunately the trend has broke the wrong way the last few weeks.
It is very tenuous.
As a country we keep wanting to ignore and hope it away.
That isnt working.

I don’t expect to see a college football season this year. Too many people involved and too many moving parts. The health of the older coaches, guys like Coach Bates, will present a particular concern and problem.

It’s a free for all here in Hilton Head. Vacationers coming in droves. Carefree and maskless. Scares the crap out of me. A healthy 67 year old guy. No distancing either. Bar seats are butt cheek to butt cheek. Ugh.

.
The Texas Lt. Governor also told us to go out and revive the economy. Grandma and grandpa are expendable. Let them die. If you are over 60 aren't you willing to die for the economy? Hell no.

And when Houstonians need ICU whose paying for their airfare to PoDunk TX. Texas Lt. Governor may need more electric shock therapy like he had before. He's full of it.

And then they return to their communities.

no it can't. that's not how it works at all. it doesn't suddenly go away. there's a clear pattern all over the world. arkansas is in huge trouble and they're projecting peak in september. current projections have them peaking in october!

they aren't even taking measures RIGHT NOW. we know how this ends. they aren't even bothering to slow the curve yet. they are screwed and only severe and total lockdown is going to affect it at this point. and they won't do it b/c the leadership has the brains of a turnip.

Paul F. just essentially said that it's likely the start of the season is delayed. Next big decisions from leagues, etc. will be mid July.

Imagine if this had a 2% overall mortality rate like Spanish Flu. Then the media would really be losing it.

It's worth taking the "wait and see" approach. We might wake up tomorrow morning and find out we have a treatment that works. Changes the equation significantly. Despite whatever leadership is doing in a particular jurisdiction or how bad it gets in some places, there are very smart people trying to figure out how to keep people from suffering.

Europe is laughing at the US for closing schools. Norway admitted that they should not have closed schools but were pressured to do so. If we want to applaud Europe's handling of their Covid response than why are some so keen to not open schools in America? The data shows the threat of mortality for this age group is miniscule. Influenza is more deadly for this age group.

If schools are open, there is not a good reason for athletics not to be played. Having fans is an entirely different animal. Don't tell me sports shouldn't be played because of a lack of fans. My Lord, this is a PITT fan site. Having fans at games has always been an issue. There are a ton of football games played every Friday and Saturday where the empty seats dwarf the asses sitting in them. This goes from power 5, to mid majors, fcs, D2, d3, NAIA, JUCO, etc.

So what if we spend a season in a new normal with no fans or limited fans.

So what if one of the coaches has a health issue. Let him sit out a year or put him an advisory position. If the elderly coaches have underlying issues, put them in the booth. Hell, haven't you ever watched Tom Landry or Bear Bryant coach at practice? They spent a ton of time in the tower. There are many ways to handle the coaching issues.

they would start training in around 6 weeks. unless a miracle happens b/w then and now, it's not going to go as normal.

He knows 5% isn't the real #. No epidemiologist believes this is the actual fatality rate. The CDC just put out yesterday the best estimate is for every positive covid case there are 10x more through covid and antibody testing. I've seen some reports who think that # could be 15-20x higher. Right now the 10x # is a safe bet.

Are you seriously trying to compare Norway to the USA? Which country in Europe is similar in size and population density to the USA?

If the 65+ age group and persons with underlying health issues stay quarantined till the vaccine distributed, should America return to normal?

If the EU is laughing at us this may have something to do with it. And they’re considering a travel ban for Americans. Doesn’t get any more pathetic or embarrassing than that.

no. b/c americans are idiots and won't do what they need to do.

here in maryland, some yokals started up a "reopen america," campaign. we know that testing and tracing work. the leader got it covid but refuses to share information cuz, "gubmnent!"

we would've been out of the woods months ago if we had leadership and people weren't so #### for brains in this country. if everyone wears a mask, we do testing and tracing, we can do MOST things again.

(Strange but true: Texas isn't Houston. If it was, Houston wouldn't be admitting adults into their Children's Hospital in order to free up beds)

On the topic of Texas, though, Abbott is rolling back our reopening after saying yesterday he would just pause it. Restaurants have to close to patrons at 12 PM and only do takeout after that.

On the topic of college football, the biggest hurdle (because lord knows there's nothing that will overcome greed) will be safe states implementing quarantines on teams coming in from hotspots. Going to be a scheduling nightmare if teams are needing to have 14 day quarantines prior to games.

Florida has rolled some stiff back too. I believe they’ve banned alcohol sales and have reduced capacity to 50%. Not certain on that but so much going on I’m not sure if I got them confused with TX. But they did do something.
