GT shocks Miami

Looks like it’s gonna be a crazy year in the ACC. GT isn’t a team that looks very good and came in to this one 7-6 but came out with a 76-70 win over the best team money can buy(how they landed Pack and Omier and kept Wong).

I thought GT would be an easy win for us, even dating back to before this past week so I’m not sure what this means for the ACC.

1.Is the ACC so loaded that everyone outside of Louisville can beat anyone on any given night? Even FSU who went 2-9 OOC is already 2-2 in ACC play.
2.Is the top of the ACC just not that strong? I mean Miami went down to GT, NC St beat up Duke and we just beat UVA and UNC

TV change for Saturday...

Release from Pitt:

PITTSBURGH – Saturday’s Atlantic Coast Conference matchup between Pitt and Clemson has been moved to ESPN2, league officials announced Wednesday morning. Game time remains at 4 p.m. from the Petersen Events Center.

Pitt, winners of 10 of its past 11 games, sits atop the ACC standing (along with Miami)with a 4-0 record. The Panthers have opened conference play with four consecutive wins for the first time since the 2013-14 season (Pitt’s first year in the ACC).

Head coach Jeff Capel’s squad has posted consecutive wins over nationally ranked opponents, topping No. 25 North Carolina (76-74) and No. 11 Virginia (68-65) at the Petersen Events Center. Pitt overcame a 12-point second half deficit to defeat the Cavaliers Tuesday evening.

Kenny in the media

I get a pretty large sampling every week of Pittsburgh media’s feelings toward Pickett.

Most of the guys on The Fan are either supportive or objective about Kenny. Tenured and respected guys like Savran and Pompiani usually speak pretty favorably.

I don’t count Madden because he’s only looking to stir the pot. Then there’s the idiot hockey writer, Josh Yohe, who is over the top in his criticism of Kenny.

And then there’s this guy…what a jerk.

Nelly mother effing Cummings

That’s it. That’s the post, as the kids say. When he entered the portal, I said he was better than anyone we had on our roster and while statistic wise it isn’t true, I think his pride in Pitt and being from Pittsburgh is eking out to the rest of the team. And yes he’s pretty damn efficient and a good PG too. Offer BeeBah tomorrow and get him to play 4 years here Jeffrey! (He may already have an offer im too drunk from the AD’s suite)

Hail to effing PITT! What a win!

Having a degree of confused feelings about contact sports -

Which is, admittedly, a little nuts.

I’m 69 years old and have a life long love with sports: participating and watching. But damn! I’m not sure I’ll ever watch a football game again without holding my breath just a little. I knew about spinal injuries but I also knew that most of that can be coached out of the game of football.

But this - this commotio cordis- based on the relatively low level of violent collision which involved Damar - this kinda scares the shit out of me.

Maybe if I was still 25 and indestructible instead of 69 and cautious, but at least for the near future, this accident is, for now, affecting how I view the game.

I fully understand how rare and unlikely this particular event is, but still . . . .

I don’t know - this is gonna take a while to sort out my feelings about sports.

Commotio Cordis

Causes of commotio cordis

Just getting hit in the chest isn’t enough to cause commotio cordis. The blow must take place at a precise moment during a heartbeat and strike an area near the center of the heart’s left ventricle. The left ventricle is the lower left chamber of the heart.

This blow can trigger ventricular tachycardia, which refers to an abnormally fast beating of the heart in the lower chambers. This is a serious condition. If the same type of contact to the chest takes place a moment later or an inch to one side, it may be harmless.

Some of the main causes of commotio cordis include being hit by a:

  • baseball
  • hockey puck
  • lacrosse ball
  • softball

Computers Still Don't Like Pitt

Not sure what it will take to change the way these computer formulas view Pitt but for whatever reason even after beating UNC and VA at home they have barely moved up.

NET Rating - 68
KenPom - 64
TeamRankings - 81
Sagarin - 59

Now their RPI is at 44 which is better but RPI not viewed as important anymore. Looking at next few games you have Clemson whose NET rating 75, so barely a Quad 2 win. Duke @ 16 NET will help win/lose but the next 4 games being

@Georgia Tech - 149 (Quad 3)
@Louisville - 348 (Quad 4)
FSU - 244 (Quad 4)
Wake Forest - 78 (Quad 3)

I just don't see the ratings moving in a positive direction if if you win them all except Duke. Maybe this is all due to the ACC being down but this doesn't match what my eyes see and unfortunately puts Pitt in a spot they needs to go 16-4/15-5 in ACC play and even then will only be a 7/8 seed at best.

The ACC is the 8th best conference in NET Ratings right now and with little to no non-conference games likely not to change much.

Here is a link to a great view of their NET Ratings and the quad wins.

Don't get me wrong....I think this team is a tournament team and making the tournament should be viewed as a positive given the past 6 seasons. Just keep winning and let's get the Pete filled with more fans to support this team.

This is No Fluke

Pre season I didn't think
I'd be seeing this. What
this team (Capel too) is
doing is amazing. My
take is experience,
maturity, decent (not
elite) talent and great
cohesiveness. They
not only want it, they
go and get it. UVA did
not have an off night,
we simply outplayed
them. The second half
Capel's players ran a
clinic on both ends of
the floor. They handled
one of the top defenses
in the country. This is
beyond our expectations.
KEEP IT UP!!
