OT: MASTERS WEEK!!! Who ya got??

I’m not anti golf, either. I played a fair amount in my 20s, pretty much none after our kids came along. I was not a great player, but I played decent enough that I’m confident that if only I could practice and play continuously day after day after day as pros do, I would perhaps not ever become as good as most pros, but I’d get pretty dam good. And frankly my physique, while ebbing and flowing (mostly to the negative) over the years, should have impeded me from being “dam good” at any true sport no matter how much time I put in. Thus my personal rationale on the matter.

I’m not saying hee isn’t talented at that activity. No random chain smoking fata$$ could just wake up, waddle onto a course, and dominate over four days to win. He certainly has to be talented, and it’s a very challenging activity for sure.

But for anybody in such shape to be able to win, and not just the greater Ashtabula invitational but two of the greatest events of the profession…makes it really hard to argue that it’s a “sport”. It just does.
I would argue that it's a game, not a hobby. But I wouldn't argue with anyone whether or not it should be called a sport. I consider it a sport because it's covered by the sports media. Stamp collecting and crocheting are hobbies. However, I would say that not all hobbies are games, and not all games are sports.

That’s fair

I don't know how much they run, but you're being stupid to think that they don't run a lot. Average soccer player runs 7-10 miles per game according to Google, I've watched enough to think that's about right..
travel 7-10 miles a game...not the same.

Golf is obviously at least a game, and it becomes a sport because it is covered by the media and accepted by sports fans as such. I’m really looking forward to tiger playing (and hope he’s competitive at the end) because he adds to the excitement of the back 9 on Sunday. If he’s actually in the hunt, you can see who withers under the additional attention (it happened in 2019).

David Wells pitched a perfect game, hungover, in between gout flareups.

I mean some guys are naturally talented. Rick Reuschel looked like a human pear, but not only was he a good pitcher, he was one of the better hitting pitchers.

Yet I know some guys who can run 20 miles like it is yesterday, and couldn't make a layup, can't throw a football, and couldn't bench their weight.

I love how Mr. Futbol acts like running around makes soccer players superior athletes. Ask anyone who is in any type of youth activities, they would advise having your kids play soccer because you don't need to have any athletic ability. Now true, elite soccer players are definitely talented and skilled, but you can't hide Ogilvie or Lupus from Bad News Bears on the baseball diamond, on a basketball court, on a hockey rink or on a football field like you could soccer. And I doubt if they could hit a golf ball, because I have seen "athletes" cannot, even with paid coaching, do it.

That's a good amount of movement in 90 minutes. You know football players don't run that far in a game.
uh, ya, but people trying to sell the constant running narrative are easily dispelled by actually watching a game.

I watch a lot of games and I see with my own eyes, pretty much constant running, what are you expecting, constant SPRINTING? That's ridiculous.

It's a sport because it takes coordination and it is.....hard. Really, really hard. I mean, it is much easier to run a marathon than to break par regularly on a golf course. I am not saying running a marathon is easy, it takes alot of work and effort, but for most people, no amount of trying and effort is going to allow you to shoot a 70 at even a decent golf course, let alone an Oakmont, not even saying an Oakmont set up for the US Open.

So......there. Darts my ass. Pool? No. Golf, to have the ability to square the club face at high speeds, and also move it millinches to draw or fade (intentionally) then have the hands and coordination and feel to stick a wedge, or a chip 5 feet to the hole, and then putt under pressure..... Yeah, it's playing beer darts at the local bar.

Again running up and down is not the most athletic thing. Takes endurance and likely you know, running every day. Most people without physical ailments, if they run 5-10 miles every day, can run as much as a soccer player without much effort.

You or SMF or me, can go to the driving range every day, play rounds every day, and not shoot a 70 at Augusta.

And to add - it’s not easy to get to where you can shoot 70 on ANY regulation course. Most who pick up a club will never even come close.

We could run, well you could, I really can't run anymore after a knee surgery, a dislocated ankle and 2 hip replacements, but could we score a goal, stop a player from scoring, dribble a ball with our feet.

This argument gets old, I mean with the American sports fan who's willing to argue all day that soccer isn't a difficult sport to play., just because it's somehow un-American or something

Eh. It’s just something to talk about, since Football isn’t back until September, baseball is dead in Pgh, basketball is ALSO dead in Pgh (and also the season is over… and no I don’t count the NBA), and it is still an interminable number of weeks until the NHL playoffs. So there’s … this.

So the summary:

Posters who golf a lot : “It’s a sport! (Burp)”
Pretty much everyone else: “Errr…no”
We are judging if something is a sport by how much athleticism it takes to play it, but then we can't agree what constitutes athleticism. Is auto racing a sport, or weight lifting? Some might dismiss them as just driving a car or picking up something heavy, but there is a physical ability required, just like hitting a golf ball 300 yards or making 15 foot putts. It's up to each person if they want to call that physical ability some form of athleticism, and how much physical fitness is a requirement for athleticism.

I'm not smart enough to know, or opinionated enough to care. If the sports media covers it, I consider it a sport.

I think really sport has been considered anything that you compete against someone else to try to win, that's why we've seen chess, curling, darts considered sports,

I don't think I have ever seen anyone consider chess or darts "sports". They are games. Playing Monopoly is not a sport. Playing Poker is not a sport.

Some sports are more skill, some are more physical, some are coordination, some are endurance, some are combinations of.

I mean I know guys who can bench press 300lbs. But they would pretty much be your last pick in almost any of the major popular sports (Hoops, football, baseball, hockey, soccer, golf, volleyball, etc...)

Does anyone think he will contend?

Hard to count him out. Apparently he is looking like he is near old form. And I think that Tiger, even at his age and physically limitations, still can get it done in short stretches. And he will distract other top golfers if in contention on the weekend, just like he did in 2019.

Would love to see him notch a few more majors before he is done. Maybe not this year but I think he gets another at some point.

I am not a Tiger fan. However I am not a hater either. And a tourney with a healthy Tiger in contention is always good drama. When he was dominant, the depth and training of most of the competition was nowhere what it is today.

I used to be a hater when he was at his prime. Nothing against him but I liked to see variety at the top (same reason why I despised the 90s Bulls). Now I'm a fan. He's a much more interesting and sympathetic character now given all he has been through (most of it self-inflicted). And we are roughly the same age so him winning makes me feel a little less old, ha.

I will go with my man and fellow ECU alum Harold Varner III. Great guy, fun to watch and playing very well this year.

So......I play this Fantasy Golf thing with a huge group of people (about $5000 in the pot) and it is based on flights of six based on their current rankings

You pick 10 golfers:

So of Rahm, Scheffler, Morikawa, Cantlay, Hovland and Cam Smith, you can only pick one of...

Then....
Justin Thomas, DJ, Xander Schauffele, McIlroy, Matsuyama and Sam Burns again only one...

And so on until you have 5 golfers from the top 30. Then...your remaining 5 is based on the rest of the field (aka Tiger, Fleetwood, Garcia, etc..)

But your top 5 finishers is what counts.

And it is based on finished. And because things are always so tight in these cases, total points is the tie breaker, guys who miss the cut you are automatically assigned 99 points. So you can have a bunch of guys who do well, but if you have 3 guys miss the cut, they can blow you out of the water.

So far my Monday picks look pretty good:

I'm going with 3 "kids":

Scheffler - leading at -8
Thomas - tied for 10th @ -1
Zalatoris - tied for 10th @ -1

Sam Burns to contend as well as Xander Schauffele.- m

Long shot pick: Tony Finau - probably out of it at +2

Top foreigner: Cam Smith - tied for 6th but if the conditions are as poor as predicted, Shane Lowry - tied for 2nd

Moe knows golf!! 🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♂️🏌️‍♂️

Mine are - wah wah - lol. So bad.

But my man Adam Scott made the cut!!!!!

Scottie Scheffler is a machine. I can't see him blowing up, but he also hasn't been in this position. man, I thought this was a perfect day for JT to make a move. Conditions toughening, and he did exactly that. Just who know Scheffler was going to match having a 7 stroke advantage.

Tomorrow is going to be tough. Conditions, windy, dry, cool........

Good picks. Sam Burns and Brooks Koepka missing the cut cost me my tier pool. Disappointing and surprising performances. I wrote-in Conners, Lowry and Sergio as required from outside the top 30 in the world rankings, so would have had a shot otherwise.
