Steelers / Draft

I didn't mind the pick. I actually wanted a DL in the first rd as it was a strong draft and they have been getting run over. Heyward is 36. Though I wouldn't have minded moving down a bit and taking a DL and picking up an extra 3rd

If they had him graded that much highly above the next guy, then I'm glad they took him. They don't need an extra pick if they're just going to end up with the next Demarvin Leal or something. I'm content with the pick. And he's more penetrating than I think people on this board are making him out to be. Might not be finishing the plays, per se, but I think I heard he was second in the country in havoc rate among interior d-linemen over the last two seasons. The Steelers didn't need a high risk/high reward guy like a Kancey; they just need someone they know they can depend on to eat blocks. There is a domino effect to that, and they've been on the wrong end of it.

Not saying he doesn't come with any concerns, but so does every pick. All in all, I'm not mad about this pick or the draft approach over the last three years. But these guys need to start yielding results, like, now. Jones, Benton, Fautanu, Harmon... let's see what you've got.

When you posted what we did with all those high drafts picks, it was a realization to me that picking up an extra pick wouldn’t have mattered anyway.

But I’d sure love for them to pick sooner than 85 or wherever it is.

Khan also seems to think drafting players who slide with injuries red flags is a thing.

Will Johnson will be the pick if they could move back into the top of 2nd round.

I still think Milroe has been their guy at QB if he's still undrafted when they come around again.

I would like that draft but it's not happening.

In fairness, these guys are under such a microscope that it feels like 30% of the draft has "injury concerns." I've seen Harmon mostly mocked in the 20s for months, so I don't think he slid and I also don't think they took him way above his value.

Fautanu, yes. But Washington, who supposedly slid due to injury concerns, hasn't been hurt to my knowledge... he just sucks.

I watched the NFL Network last night so I missed Mel Kiper and the ESPN crew's non-stop talk about Sanders. It's really shitty they ignored Ward to talk about Sanders.
Because covering a train wreck is a lot more interesting than a solid player.

Would be nice to get back into the second round somehow. Or has football just become your good when it's your turn now.
Scouting isn't exactly a secret anymore.
I don’t think it’s as simple as waiting until your “suck” phase lines up with a class with enough QB talent that you can get a franchise arm. Obviously it helps, but it didn’t work with Stafford in Detroit, Goff in LA, Darnold in NYJ. If anything those guys showed how much talent needs the right coaching and management. Philly and Baltimore are the two obvious examples of identifying talent then being smart enough to adapt and build around it. I have no idea if Milroe or Will Howard would be guys you can do that around. Lamar and Hurts were more prolific in college but on draft day Kiper was talking about one moving to WR and the other RB. Either could be leading the Steelers to a playoff run if they had the vision of those front offices.

Edit: Also both PHI and BAL had starting QBs that they weren’t coddling when they drafted those guys.

The recent Steelers vision still includes game management and defense. Win with FG's. It's good enough to "be a winner" but never good enough to win anything.

Two OCs under Sirianni got HC jobs. One was let go because he didn’t produce. Tomlin goes safe hiring inside (Fichter, Canada) or guys that got that shot at a HC and failed (Haley, Smith). Not saying both can’t work, but the latter clearly isn’t a path to innovation.

Dart going over Sanders isn’t much of a surprise, those 2 were pretty much neck and neck on which would go first. If Shough or Milroe end up going ahead of Sanders now that will be a story.
The only people surprised are the people who listen to Kiper. Good lord he wouldn't shut up about a mediocre QB prospect. How much is he being paid by the Sanders family?

He looks like a lot like Chris Jones in his highlights. Not saying he'll be Chris Jones, but Jones wasn't even a 1st round pick.

I have no problem with this pick when you consider the state of their DL. Add in that they've been moving more and more to a 4-3 and it makes a lot of sense.

Washington was more of a Dejuan Blair situation. His issue is more long-term viability.

I like Harmon’s versatility as a 3 tech / 5 tech guy. Steelers were in sub packages like 60% of the time so that’s where they get most DL snaps. Good options now with him, Cam, and Benton. Step up from Larry O, who was bad last season. Hopefully Adams bounces back and can be the nose in the base. Maybe they look at another in later rounds but that’s lower value.

Wonder if the Giants were the team that was trying to trade up? Probably still get Harmon or at least someone very similar at 34 and two more picks. It would seem that there was someone else trying to get to move up because the Eagles made that deal with the Chiefs to move up one slot.

You think he is going to resign here next season ?
I don't.
They gave 30 million to Metcalf, looks like they are not planning long term with Pickens.
With a trade they can get a younger less headache WR.

Tomlin loahtes in basket case WR's. He loves it. The Steelers will never not have a drama driven WR.

In 2023 Stillers had 4 in the top 100 (14, 32, 49 and 93).

Broderick Jones - Round 1
Joey Porter Jr. - Round 2
Keeanu Benton - Round 2
Darnell Washington - Round 3

Point to the drafted well.

So far, you have a bust, a not good, a journeyman type and just another reserve type. That's simply a poor use of draft capital in a draft that should have helped set your foundation.
Who’s the bust ?
Not jones

There’s the issue with the Steelers, I don’t care who the QB is can any QB develop in their offensive scheme? Whether or not they draft a quarterback this year or next can they actually develop a QB.

Yeah he’s a jabroni. Last night he made sure everyone knew how right he has been through the years with certain QBs. All because of his obsession with Sanders.

Does he not think we know how equally bad he’s been through the years too?
Only thing would would have been worse is having McShay there to have their usual sniping at each other as well

If this is a stupid question, I apologize in advance. Why couldn't the Steelers keep Pickens this year and then tag him to retain his rights and get draft capital if he signs elsewhere next year?

They will likely get a 3rd of he signs elsewhere next season. That's why it's silly to trade him for anything beyond a 2nd.

If they do trade him, the WR corp is back to bottom quartile, making the Medcalf trade silly imo.

Wondering if I should watch NFL network tonight to avoid ESPN’s gratuitous Shedeur fondling…or watch espn so that I can watch the gratuitous shedeur fondling for some weird form of comic relief???

Kiper was an embarrassment last night. He has a 40 year career of being wrong and getting paid really well at the same time

If you look at the first 40 picks the vast majority of players are from power 5 schools. Get used to seeing that as the very best players are going to attend universities that have the most NIL and can pay them more
