These guys are 6 in one hand, half dozen in the other. Fields will parlay the few games he won with the Steelers into a decent contract though.
What other choice do they have? Bring in Jamie's Winston? Steelers play in a division with Burrow and Jackson. They will be at a competitive disadvantage at that position no matter who they get. They just kissed Ben's 🫏 for so long that they failed to properly plan for his departure. Tomlin will always be a defensive minded coach and A. Smith is a far better option than Canada, but still in a similar mold.
I just think the QB position is vastly under coached and over scrutinized in the NFL.

Maybe for a 1 year deal, but not 2+. I'd go in with something like 3 years, $80 million with $35 in years one and 2 and only a $10 cap hit in year 3. If he is still viable after year 2, you can renegotiate year 3, but if he isn't, it won't cost you much to cut him.

the pirates had a legit world championship contender more recently than the Steelers. Let that sink in.
The only history that is relevant in sports is recent history. There is nothing transferable from something that happened 10-40 years ago. Look at Pitt hoops and Jamie Dixon. Is there anything that happened from 2003-2011 that has anything to do with either of them today?
Lol! You need real help. They never made it to the top, true. Being the 2nd place team in the league for 4 straight seasons is an accomplishment. I guess for you it's about being a 500 team in a league full of 500 or worse teams. For you, it's also about playing 3 top teams in a row and not being competitive in any of the 3 games. Tomlin is great. Not a single playoff win in 9 years. Now that is a great accomplishment for a once proud team.

The Steelers have been hovering within a game or two of .500 for years…which is how the league designs it. It’s the epitome of mediocre. Shocking that people accept that and revel in it.
You better get Jefferson, Addison, their Oline and Kevin O'Connell in that deal. If not, you're just dreaming in color thinking Darnold is going to replicate this years season.

Yay! My team won a playoff game in 2019! I can tell you that since the Steelers last won a playoff game, the Broncos have not lost a playoff game. The Falcons still haven't won a Super Bowl. In fact, since 1980, the Stillers have won as many Super Bowls as the rest of the teams in the AFC North have won combined. But hey, the Browns won a playoff game in 2020! Yay!

The Steelers will overspend on Fields and be tied to that anchor for at least five years. I think that was the plan all along.
Not sure if anyone has noticed but Tomlin has no real interest in having a dynamic offense. Look at the whole offense by position and tell me where they're in the top half of the league in anything. Even salary. They even hired an OL coach who was fired almost as an afterthought. It's defense first and kick a field goal. Try to win every week by only putting 17 points on the board. Except that the defense isn't that good anymore, either, so they'll focus on that side of the ball in the draft.

But at least they don't have losing seasons and the local sports writing lap dogs will convince you you're damn lucky to have a mediocre football team.

Nothing? It seems to be affecting your self esteem. You just don't feel whole wearing your Heath Miller jersey out to the bar when the Steelers are 10-6 because you just know they are going to lose another game in January.
i agree and this is obviously Tomlin's philosophy. the problem is, this slightly above .500 crap justifies this "system" in his mind and it wont change. and we know he wont be fired, ever so really us steeler fans are at the mercy of him and our only hope is him wanting to pull a cowher and retire early or pull an Andy reid and go elsewhere..
while steeler nation has to just sit here on our hands and celebrate 9-8 seasons with first round playoff losses while we wave our terrible towels

Tomlin has the safest job in all of pro sports. There isn't any other pro coach on the planet that has better job security. And lets face it, most of "Steeler Nation" is fine with this and would love nothing more than to see the Steelers run a FB out there for 90% of the plays.

To be honest and serious here, I dont do cosplay. While you wear Jedi costumes to theaters for Star Wars movies, I don’t and therefore don’t wear other men’s jerseys either. Dress up is for kids and nerds. And furthermore I wasn’t much of a fan of those steeler teams because they employed a rapist thug at QB.
I don't have an issue with a run 1st philosophy. My issue is the lack of lack of imagination. They could mix things up better. It's ok to throw it on 1st down to throw the scent off some. Also they want to be a power run team, but they do not actually commit to it. I think it would actually serve them better to just embrace it with double TE and a FB instead of trying to be a power team with a crap O-line

Darnold is going for 45M+. i'd assume vikings get him and shop JJ but who knows. i saw from shefter (i think) that the asking price for JJ is a first Rd and more..
im not sure im giving up a first rd pick for JJ mcarthy.

The whole thing breaks down when you spend all of your money on defense and then overpay for a couple of free agents that are more or less backups or guys you plug in and feel okay about when you have a great OL around them. It also helps if you don't keep drafting guys and try to plug them into positions they didn't play in college. You want to go back to a Jerome Bettis led type of offense? Great. But that team had an offensive line that could get two yards anytime they wanted.
Good attitude to have, as it sure ain't gonna happen in Pittsburgh; at least anytime soon 😜

I can't even imagine what Darnold would look like running this offense. Currently he has probably the top receiver set to throw to in Jefferson, Addison, and Hockenson. Give him Pickens, Austin, and Friermuth with the Steelers pass blocking and you have a bottom 10 starter in this league. It wouldn't even be fair to blame it on Arthur Smith. This team has very little offensive talent and their best piece has a ten cent head if he is lucky. This team is a disaster when you compare any position group to some of the NFL's best, but, nowhere is the discrepancy more profound than at receiver.
