Hillman Library 1st floor Renovations....getting slammed

Except it isn't a hospital. It's a school where students will be spending a ton of time.

For comparison, here's Harvard's 2019 health library renovation and their 2021 med school rennovation.

Not afraid to use wood to create warmer, more inviting spaces.
What's up with the dog?

Pitt’s buildings since the late 1960s absolutely have been disappointing architecturally. In fact it’s easier to say which buildings suck most vs those that don’t Maybe worse is that they’ve not seemed to have any common theme or objective.

It makes it harder to defend when non-Pitt people criticize the aesthetic of the Pitt “campus” I typically have to lean on the Greek inspired buildings, the non-Pitt buildings, and of course the Cathedral, mumble and apologize over the ugly ones of more recent decades and that quickly shift more to emphasize the overall urban vibe.

On a smaller scale, they've also done some really dumb things like replacing the street lamps around the William Pitt Union with modern style that don't fit with the surroundings at all. They even got rid of a clearly antique/historic one on the 5th Ave corner of the WPU which was borderline criminal...you don't see that happening across the street at Soldiers and Sailors. Even so, there are modern LED one's that could have complemented the style of the 19th Schenley Hotel and gothic Cathedral so much better. You can see these are other campuses that seem to get the cultivation of atmosphere. Whoever made that decision on the lamp style was either cheap or tasteless or perhaps both.

Wait to you see what they are planning for the Forbes side of WPU. They're going to be stripping off the 80s installed colonnade facade and portico on the lower level, which while not historically original, actually makes that entrance so much nicer. Yet they won't be restoring the original detailing on the roof.

The choices have been consistently underwhelming to poor. They need a new university architect....I don't know if they've had one since Park Rankin was there. Or they need new design firms. Whoever is signing off on some of this garbage has, IMO, no sense of university pride or academic atmosphere and no sense of conveying, as the Cathedral does, importance or significance of interior space. They aren't inviting and they don't convey scholarlyness. New flash...students don't like it; potential students aren't impressed, and alumni don't generally seem to like it either. It just seem like they go with whatever flavor of the moment style a design firm vomits up.

I wish I had more confidence in what was going to go up in their future major academic projects. Probably underwhelming like everything else they've done recently.

The library looked like a library is supposed to look. What they have how is so sterile. I don't blame the students for being disappointed in the renovation. Pitt could have updated the library but this looks like a hospital ward. The special reading rooms were nice.

I bet Pitt hired a designer who is the son/daughter in law of one of the VPs and then they probably have someone like the VP of Finance or IT giving final approval for the hideous designs.

I'm trying to figure out what is going on in that auditorium. Maybe allows to split the space? But in the back section would be like last row of upper deck for a stadium concert.
Yes - if you look at the bulkhead between in the ceiling between the two spaces, the track for a folding partition is visible. So they are able to create two separate spaces - a lecture hall and a multi-purpose space. The seating in the front section appears to be moveable as well, creating more flexibility in the use of the lower section.

Decisions like color and design embellishment in a lot of new construction projects has suffered at the hand of budget issues. As is well known, since Covid material costs have jumped and the budgets for a lot of these projects (especially if they received federal or state funding) had not been adjusted appropriately from the pre-covid allocations.

It seemed the objective might have been to make it seem bigger, since they couldn’t actually make it bigger? Dunno.

I always felt bad for the library with the monstrosities of Posvar (Forbes Quad when I was there) and the Law Building consuming it. I certainly appreciate how useful Posvar is, how much space it provides etc. But it is just … so … ugly. I rarely had reason to enter Law for much, but I was told by laws student friends that it is (was) excessively modular and stifling inside to go with its external hideous look.

And what’s worse is that these are some of the first buildings of the true campus that many encounter as they enter Oakland, those big stained white concrete pock-marked hulking structures. Thankfully the Cathedral dominates attention as most pass. Shield your visitors from the disaster on the right if you take any…better yet enter from North Oakland…

They are making it bigger. There is an addition going up on the Forbes/Bigalow corner.

Best entrance to campus is through Schenley Park from Shadyside; come out by Frick Fine Arts on your left with Schenley Plaza and the Cathedral in front of you and Carneige Museums on your right. All recruits should be driven in that way.

I’m assuming that’s the current “style” since most new or renovated office buildings I’ve been to recently have a similar look.
For something as center piece as the main campus library, absolutely no one that should retain their job should sign off on a latest style of office space.

So, more images of the redesign with the first floor finishing this year....

I hope these aren't fully finished or are only a small part of their respective rooms. If not, honestly, the people signing off on this should be shot. I think they actively hate the university. The funny thing is, they actually sent these renovation images out in an email boasting about them saying "seen here with their unique palettes and finishes." Looks like an absolute failure. How can people be this obtuse? They should be ashamed.

I thought you had the “before” and “after” mixed up at first… wow. Talk about a downgrade. Were they lacking classrooms that much that they thought it necessitated gutting the existing spaces?

Agree...to a point. But you've answered my question with a resounding "no".
I didn’t see the pictures
Has plenty of classes in Scaife -and it sucked before .
Anything else is an improvement.

The new Salk Hall looks great.
Did a tour after it was completed .

There is a general shortage of classrooms at the university. This is not an attempt to fix that, since my understanding is that is not what this is for. The main points of the Hillman renovation was to increase the size (long planned) and then increase student congregation and study areas to make it more functional for students (the library's usage is actually up, not down) and less about storing reading materials in stacks which were moved to the library archive service center in Point Breeze. Looks like they've decided they should host speaking engagements primarily and not be about reading at all. No one is going to sit in these former "reading rooms" to read.

The whole thing has been abysmal so far with some exceptions. The rare collections displays on the upper floors are an improvement. The aesthetic of what has been finished so far on the lower levels has been slammed as "hospital cafeteria" and it certainly conveys that feel in my opinion as well. There is no homage to the original mid-century design or any of the surrounding architecture and absolutely nothing that would brand the building as the "University of Pittsburgh." We'll see if it comes together when the new addition opens, but I'm not hopeful.

When I toured people and prospective students around the university, Hillman was always a stop on the tour. Now there is zero that is distinctive or interesting about it.

They went for the communist look.
nah, they went from the communist look...I went to the Czech embassy in DC for a Christmas fare in December. Built in the midst of the Cold War in the 60s it has the same lame stale behind the Iron curtain paneling as this had...There must have been a sale. The Czechs are also moving on from it...Seems to me some decent artwork (Pitt is It SI cover painting and a Send it in Jerome mural) on those nice clean walls will do wonders..

Another question. The old rooms looked to have some degree of natural light coming in. Now they look more like a closed of hospital family waiting area, based on the pics.

Almost everything I am seeing are saying aseptic, cold, sterile, too bright, like a hospital cafeteria or airport.

What is surprising to me is these comments are coming from current students.
Far too contemporary. Looks like they're being groomed for future cubicle jobs. I went to CBA, and was mostly allergic to the library. But at least it used to look like a library.

Those are unspeakable horrors. What a disaster.
