Which Steelers coordinator had the worst game plan?

A. Todd Haley, who did the following:

- ran a deep hand off to DeAngelo Williams twice in a row with first and goal at the 1.

- followed that up with a pass to Rogers in the flat that wouldnt have been a touchdown even if it was completed

- on third and one in the very first drive of the game, throws a deep ball to stone-hands Sammie Coates, instead of getting the first down and moving the sticks.

- on fourth and goal calls a fade pattern to the 5th best receiver on the team.

B. Keith Butler, who did the following:

- Despite all past evidence in video of every game he has ever played showing that Tom Brady only struggles when you put consistent pressure on him and play man-to-man defense.... went with a 3 man rush and 8 men in a deep zone (essentially a prevent defense) on every passing down.

It is a close call... but i give the nod to Butler. Did he even watch film this week.... at all?
Ben clearly switched to that play.

If Pitt played Alabama and lost, I don't think any local media would blame the coaching staff.

WHAT?! That's exactly who they would blame. They would say "Same old Pitt". It wouldn't matter who they played or how much of an underdog they are, it's Pitt's fault.

Now if PSU was playing Alabama, they would make every excuse in the world as to why they lost...

Butler by a country mile. This organization needs to start spending some money on defensive free agents in the offseason because we are lacking in key areas and the drafts have not been that productive. They also need to change their defensive philosophy and get players in here that can play solid man to man press coverage. Easier said than done but it's long overdue.
In a couple of years they will be able to start drafting Pitt db's.

Yeah, don;t get me wrong, Brady and his skill set are a perfect fit for that system. Just not sure he'd be all that great anywhere else, and I also think there are a lot of guys in the league that would thrive in the Pats system. There has never been an offense like it. As I said, Brady never gets touched, he rarely gets pressured, he gets to make a flat footed throw through a wide open passing lane to a wide open guy within a 3 count of the snap 90% of the time.
Did you watch the Houston game? They beat the snot out of Brady. They must have hit him 15 times minumum. They got heat on him using double A gap blitz repeatedly. They even picked him off twice and played good solid press man the entire game.

They gave us a blueprint on what it takes to stop him. The problem is we don't have the personnel to play that defense. Houston, if they had even a decent offense, probably could have won last week.

That said, Brady is special. He is extremely smart and gets them in the right play time and time again. He has no problem hitting the open man, even if it is someone like Hogan, who you don't expect. Big Bonehead, on the other hand, seems confused when Antonio Brown is taken away.

What is really sad about our Steelers and the coaches is that they had evidence to the tune of Brady throwing 19TD versus 0 Interceptions against us in his last 7 games I think. Yet, they refused to change the defensive approach. That is truly inexcuseable.

Other than at QB and a few Defensive backs, Pittsburgh has the more talented individual players. However, when you factor in coaching, it is a total mismatch in favor of New England. Oh well, maybe we get a shot a them next year, and maybe the coaches will have the brains to try something different on defense.

Until then, lets go Matty Ice and the Atlanta Falcons. If Belichick can take Julio Jones and make him ordinary, then he is the greatest coach ever. Julio is the best in the game, and there is no one close. His size and speed are incomparable. This is going to be a fantastic Superbowl!

I just don't for the life of me understand this soft zone on 3rd and long.. I swear to you, it would be 3rd and 8 and our lbs and slot corners were dropping back 10 yards and then reacting.. I don't understand that.. It's almost like they don't know where the first down marker is.. The 5'8" white WR will not beat you over the top, on 3rd and 8, drop back 7 yards, not 12. I know it's more complex than I am making it but this is common sense.. Brady is a 2-3 step drop and throw guy, that is their offense.. On 3rd and 8, they are going to run an 8-9 yard pattern, we know that, everyone knows that. why are you dropping back 10 yards..

what do the geniuses that coach one of the most sophisticated offenses in the history of football that is New England almost always do when they need a foot for a first down or a touchdown? anybody?

um... What is "QB sneak with 39-year-old Tom Brady?" for $400, Alex.

I agree. No reason what so ever not to run a QB sneak on 1st and goal on the one yard line. Instead of a delayed hand off with 11 in the box lol.
Also when it comes to defense. You never allow a small quick type wideout. The ability to have a ton of space to get open. You need to press hard in coverage. Which will take away their quickness advantage by playing physical. On top of disrupting their timing in the passing game.

Any person with even the slightest football IQ could see this. Except for the Steeler coaches. Comical

Except...:and don't minimize the reason for the Steelers not using Ben on a sneak and that is, he's turned into a bit of a brittle diva who has created the apprehension in the coaching staff that he may come up lame regardless of how much contact he actually experiences. Ben should have went to the staff and told them he would sneak it in. Had he done that, that's exactly the play which would have been called. I blame that call as much on Ben as the coaching staff. If he can't sneak it in from the one foot line they should put a skirt on him!

There's a shocker.

Don't you think that Houston's D is not only better equipped to play that D better overall than the Steelers D?

Even at that and removing the KO return, which was kind offset by Lewis fumbling on the 10, Pat's scored 27, with KO return, 34. Steelers had 9 until 3 minute mark of the 4th quarter.

who gets most of the blame? hard to say when they all sucked

getting to the conference title game feels close to the ultimate prize, but watching that game they are further away than you would think

going into next season i think there's still at least 5 teams better than the steelers

The Cowboys went from the #4 overall pick to the top dawg in the NFC to a 1 and done team. Nobody knows what next year will bring.

Which Houston game? The one the Pats won 27-0 back in September or the 34-16 beatdown last week?

Last week when Tom Brady went 18 for 38 and threw two interceptions. Had Houston had an offense New England would have been in trouble.
