Ronneys, Steelers not happy with SEA

It seems like Pegula is looking to work with the city/region....I don't see him making demands. Could be wrong though.
I would think they'll work with him if he's going to put a lot of his own money into it. Seems like he is very interested in making his team a fan friendly product and surround the team with a good atmosphere. Nothing about him strikes me as "cheap" or "dumb." Personally I think the buffalo bills are in pretty good hands.

Yeah, I agree, though he seems like a bit of a front office meddler. Definitely in better hands than when RW was involved with Toronto.

Rich stadium, the Ralph, now new era field, whatever you wanna call it is my favorite stadium in america. Just a residential suburban neighborhood, you drive down the street past all the houses in the neighborhood then boom... NFL stadium. I'd recommend seeing a game in orchard park to anyone that likes to go to other venues. Bleacher seating though I'm pretty sure throughout the whole stadium if you can deal with that.

Wait, that stadium is in a residential area? So, why can't Pitt build in Oakland? Where do the people in Buffalo park? Do they have to walk a little to get there? Are there massive traffic issues?

I think it will last a lot longer than people think. All of the development around the north shore is part of that deal. The Rooneys and the Pirates, just like the Penguins in uptown, are investors in that development.

The upgrades will be things like an expanded/upgraded great hall, probably new ribbons around the stadium, updated score boards over the years, etc. They most likely will not do another seat expansion, or it would be minimal if they did.

I don't ever remember hearing that they wanted a new stadium in another 5-7 years other than people on this board that want to make that narrative their lifes work.

You should be applauding these upgrades as it will help Pitt as well.

i agree with you.

All of the chatter in this thread is about upgrades......my question would be, is there a better location for a new stadium?

I say no. Thus, rooney wants upgrades to the existing structure which I think he will eventually get.

Rooney's want all the benefits of having their own stadium, but none of the negative aspects. They remind my of the To Big To Fail banks. The Steelers get the big revenue from the NFL, but if there's a problem then they need our help. They wanted Steelers colored seats. Got it. They wanted a grass field. Got it. They wanted "Pittsburgh" in the end zone. Got it. They wanted the T extension, Got it. At the expense of NOT BUILDING one to Oakland. Disgusting.

Yes, moving north into Cranberry is a far better option. Lower taxes, more room, no issues with Allegheny County.

Its residential but not dense by any means (probably similar to the outskirts of Cranberry or Moon Twp). Parking is abundant and it is bounded on either side by an expressway.

I believe one of the reasons they built the stadium in Buffalo where they did was that there was lots of room for parking. It's surrounded by huge parking lots.

They have a huge parking lot right next to the stadium. And idk but i would guess Oakland is a much more crowded area. I mean Pitt had a stadium in Oakland, and the traffic and everything was a nightmare, that actually happened. This was many years ago though, I would like to think if they built a new stadium they could figure something out that would work better.

Look at the pictures, there is a ton of land. If Pitt wanted to build a stadium in Fox Chapel or something, then it would be comparable.

Before spewing off nonsense and making dumb comparisons, why not look at comparables.

Louisville I'm not sure, seems to be a nice arena. Syracuse I really don't know how or why they would ever have it up there. That's gotta be the least likely of any ACC school to host it. At least in Pittsburgh though it would be at PPG Paints if they don't want it actually at someone's home arena.
I think they want to be in a neutral facility. The Yum holds around 22K, ideal size. (Unless you like small campus gyms.) The Carrier Dome is awful, and Syracuse as a town couldn't support an event that big. Didn't the ACC plan to give Boston a shot?? Not that the Cuse or Beantown are weather-friendly, but NYC isn't, either.

Actually, I do think the Rooney's are angling for a new venue. When you hear them talking about $25 million just to upgrade the great hall, that seems excessive. When you hear Rooney talk about hosting Super Bowls and other events that would happen in potentially bad weather, he knows it's not happening in that stadium. Not with the crummy parking or lack of adequate lodging in the city. I never saw Heinz as "world class" facility and I'm pretty sure the rest of the world is much different.

But the SEA is exactly what he had to give up to get 100% funding so I really don't feel badly for him other than he may be creating a convenient scapegoat to look outside the city for another option. It is not unthinkable and it is certainly doable if he's willing to pony up like the Vikings did for control.

Yeah totally agree about Syracuse, that would be awful. I'm not sure about Boston, but I think you're right. Like I said I'm pretty sure I heard they want to rotate it to different cities. So yeah, Louisville would work but it's not a neutral site. That's why I would hope they'd consider PPG but might be a few years til they even consider it.

Did you miss the question mark? That indicates a question is being asked.

Hospital. Or Romoff's safe deposit box. ;)

They had a hospital location lined up but had to back out due to massive community objections. I'm sure they'd have less objection if they sited a hospital on a vacant and derelict mall.

Your comment about Romoff made me think of Scrooge McDuck's vault. I could definitely see Romoff jumping on a huge pile of money.

been to a few games up there, a long time ago (2 games in late 80's). they park anywhere they can. People actually charge cars to park in their front yards, no joke.

“I don’t know that there’s a real commitment here from our landlord to do what’s necessary and work with us in a way that’s cooperative,” Rooney told the Post-Gazette. “It’s hard for me to explain what the reason is. It’s been something that’s becoming more difficult as the years have gone on in our lease.”

--Not hard to see what's going on here.

Now, here's the interesting part. Rooney says relationship with the Stadium and Exhibition Authority has gotten worse as times has passed. How could the Steelers avoid dealing with the Stadium and Exhibition Authority completely?

Play in a stadium outside of the city of Pittsburgh and outside of Allegheny County.

New stadium, no.

Upgrades yes

Really? Are you in the meetings with Steelers officials? Do tell what the plan is.

The fact is you don't know.

What we all do know is how NFL owners operate. And they've been turning over stadiums every 30 years or less.

And these kinds of statements (coming out of the blue and not in response to anything specific) are not focused on a particular issue. He criticized the entire relationship with Stadium and Exhibition Authority and said it's gotten worse over time!

Upgrades to the existing facility do NOT solve the problem of dealing with the SEA. Moving to a facility outside of the jurisdiction of the SEA does solve the problem.

Time for the university to enter the upgrades conversation demanding the PITT brand be more prominent throughout the stadium. PITT originally agreeing to move to the north side absolutely helped secure state and county funding for Rooney's stadium.

Are you kidding? On what basis does Pitt have to make any demands? What leverage?
We are a tenant in that facility and we can't even dictate the time of our own home games.

We had him speak at a North Hills Pitt Club meeting...1994. He said that UPMC would dominate the region.....and went about doing just that. I had a once-removed connection to one of his deals......his aides tried to back out at the last minute because they discovered that they hadn't done their research.....he told them to get out of his office, cut the agreed-upon check and deliver it. Had to admire his integrity on that one.

So they are going to fund the majority of their own stadium without much taxpayer help? Because there is not the tax base their is in washington or butler County to draw from. And they are certainly not jerry jones. Are going to ditch their north shore development that they are deeply invested in?

I don't know for sure and neither do you.

One day a new stadium will be built but I believe it is much further down the road than some of you.

I have no idea what they are going to do.

You're the only who spent a good bit of time on page 1 of this thread DENYING that they wanted a new stadium and insisting (repeatedly) that all they wanted was upgrades.

How do you know what they want? You don't.

The fact is that you can only upgrade an existing facility like this so many times (particularly when you're dealing with other franchises getting brand new facilities). As such, it's only a matter of time.

When the Ravens, Eagles, Patriots, browns, and Bengals start saying their stadiums out dated and they need new ones then I'll start to wonder. Not the Cowboys lions 49ers chargers etc that were in old concrete bowls.

There is no evidence they are asking for a new stadium like some of you are spewing. Only that they want upgrades. So I think that leans more towards my argument.

I guess time will tell.

I think the reason why people scoff at this premise is that it pushes the on campus agenda by pitt fans. Steelers are going to Washington PA/Butler any day now so pitt has to build a stadium or we'll lose our football program. I'd say its a reach but that wouldn't even do it justice.. Wishful thinking still doesn't do it justice..

I cant predict future but if I was a betting man, I'd take betting against the steelers being in butler or Washington pa in the year 2039..

If one actually looks at the SEA and it's Board of Directors, Rooney's statement falls along the lines of "what did you expect".
Mary Conturo is the ED of the SEA and has been for well over a decade.
She is clueless. A nice person, but clueless.
The SEA is a convenient place to give people jobs in the Democratic machine.
I'm not arguing Dem v Rep....I am simply stating a fact.
Look at their staff and BOD...it is an Island of Misfit Toys for political hacks.
Even this tiny piece proves Rooney's point. The SEA has inside legal counsel, yet outside counsel offers the retort to Rooney.
Politicians at any level have morals shaped by votes. No one inside the SEA is brave, bright or cool enough to respond to Rooney. So with a ballooned staff, they pay outside counsel to respond. Outside counsel who has zero independent accountability.
In the wake of the Convention Center deal and construction fatality, to get their way, the Pirates, Steelers and to a far lesser degree the Penguins help create a bureaucrat filled, mindless entity.
Of course dealing with them is akin to pulling teeth....they are not there because they are smart Art....if they were smart, you would have an adversary.
Instead you have a classic case of bureaucrats running a quasi business with zero business sense and incapable of independent thought.
You got what you asked for Art.
Final note: I will say what I admire about Mary. She is smart enough to keep her mouth shut. Art is not.
I know absolutely zero about the SEA but I can believe every word of this. It's Pittsburgh.

Your evidence is how the Rooneys treated 3 Rivers Stadium. 1970-2000 was the lifespan of that dump. And Heinz Field is pretty much a dump too compared to many NFL stadiums. Rooney in the interview indicated there is no hope of Pittsburgh hosting the Super Bowl, that is something that the Steelers desperately want. It's apparent that's not going to happen with the SEA. So, what do they do? Move. It's as clear as day here guys.

you guys are acting like just up and moving out of Allegheny Co and playing in the suburbs is this easy task. you know they still have to build a stadium, someone has to fund it, oh yeah, they also are under contract with the city.. This is an nfl franchise, not a band of gypsies. you just cant pack up the tent and move your stadium to a different county here folks, because your mad at SEA for not picking up the bill for more seats..

dude, we need permission to spray paint the pitt logo on the 50 yard line.
We are renters, not owners. Rooney serfs, if you will. They may demand we change our colors to black & yellow someday.

rooneys empirical reign over pitt will end if and when George Aston says it will. Rumor is, he's pissed and gonna talk to the rooney family this week. Expect the steelers to fold, change their unis / logo to script pitt, blue and gold. Real gold too, not this metallic bright crap either..

There are some real loons on here. It has a better chance of having a republican mayor in Pittsburgh than either having an on-campus stadium or the Steelers ever leaving the North Side. As I have posted many time, the North Side is more of an ancestral home to the Rooney's now than Ireland. No chance they ever leave.

A Republican mayor in Pittsburgh - almost spit out my coffee.

This is called "controlling the narrative." The Steelers know they're the preferred entity in the region compared to city and county government so they're getting out in front of the "wah! They're being mean to us storyline." They know a sizable portion of the dimwits, who love all things Stillers and consider the Rooneys a benevolent royal family, will back them. This is also a nice way to poison the waters in case they ever do want to move. They can point to this story and say, "see?!! We told you all the way back then that they were not interested in helping."
